In FS2004, spoilers usually fail to deploy because the command is unassigned, another joystick axis is holding them retracted, the lever is only armed rather than extended, or the add-on aircraft uses custom panel logic. Test the command in a default jet first; that separates a control problem from an aircraft-specific one.
How do I fix spoilers that will not deploy in FS2004?
Start with the default Boeing 737-400 and a keyboard command, then add your controller and add-on aircraft back one at a time.
- Load a default jet: Park the default 737-400 with its throttles fully idle. Use an external view so you can see the panels on top of the wings.
- Check the assigned commands: Open FS2004's Controls assignments screen and find the spoiler commands. On an unchanged keyboard setup,
/normally toggles the spoilers andShift+/arms them. Keyboard layouts and previous customisation can change these, so trust the assignment screen rather than the printed key. - Test direct deployment: Use the extend/retract command, not the arm command. If the cockpit lever moves to the extended position and the wing panels rise, the basic FS2004 control is working.
- Disconnect optional controllers: Close FS2004, unplug extra gamepads, quadrants and joysticks, then restart the simulator. A reversed, noisy or duplicated spoiler axis can continuously command RETRACT and override the keyboard.

Why are the spoilers armed but not deployed?
Armed and extended are different states. Arming prepares the ground spoilers for automatic deployment after touchdown; it does not normally raise the panels while the aircraft is flying.
For an automatic-deployment test, arm the spoilers before landing, place the throttles fully at idle and let the main landing gear register on the runway. A throttle axis that stops slightly above idle can prevent deployment, while advancing the throttles may retract the spoilers again. Use the direct extend/retract command when testing manual speed brakes in flight or on the ground.
Why do they work on default aircraft but not an add-on?
An add-on-specific failure means FS2004's global assignment is working, but the aircraft is overriding it or does not implement the function in the expected way.
- Some panels use a clickable arm switch or custom gauge rather than relying entirely on the default command.
- More complex aircraft may require electrical power, hydraulic pressure or a particular throttle position.
- The flight model may support spoiler drag while the external model lacks moving panels, or the model may contain an animation without meaningful aerodynamic effect.
- A replacement panel can break the original aircraft's gauge logic even though the visual model remains unchanged.

If the fault began after replacing a panel or gauges, restore the aircraft package's original files. Do not start by copying gauges from a default aircraft or editing its flight-dynamics files; those changes can introduce a second fault without repairing the custom logic.
Why does the lever move but the spoiler animation does not?
A moving lever proves that FS2004 received the command, but it does not prove that the aircraft model contains working spoiler animation.
At a safe test altitude, compare the aircraft's deceleration and descent tendency with the lever retracted and fully extended. A clear aerodynamic response with no visible panel movement points to a model-animation limitation. If there is neither movement nor aerodynamic effect, the add-on may not support spoilers or its aircraft configuration may be damaged.
When should I reset the FS2004 control assignments?
Reset the assignments only when a default aircraft still fails with optional controllers disconnected and the commands are missing or corrupted.
Record any custom mappings first, restore the controls through FS2004's assignment screen, and test the keyboard before reconnecting hardware. Avoid deleting configuration files as the first remedy: that also removes unrelated preferences and rarely fixes an aircraft-specific panel problem.
