Why won't my aircraft turn right in FS2004?

If your aircraft will not turn right in FS2004, first decide whether the fault occurs in the air or only on the ground. In flight, test the right-aileron input and remove autopilot or controller conflicts; while taxiing, check rudder or nosewheel steering, brake assignments and taxi speed.

How do I diagnose a right-turn problem in FS2004?

The quickest diagnostic is to test a default aircraft with the keyboard, autopilot off and all external controllers disconnected. This separates an aircraft problem from a global FS2004 control fault.

  1. Load a default aircraft: use a standard Cessna in calm weather at a safe altitude and normal flying speed. An add-on aircraft can introduce its own gauges, failures or flight-dynamics errors.
  2. Disconnect the autopilot: switch off the autopilot master as well as heading, wing-leveller or navigation modes. An engaged mode can oppose your manual bank input.
  3. Test the keyboard: use NumPad 6 for right aileron, then NumPad 5 to centre the controls. If you need the other original bindings, see our reference for FS2004 keyboard controls.
  4. Try the joystick again: if the keyboard turns the aircraft but the joystick does not, the aircraft is serviceable and the fault is in the controller, calibration or assignments.
  5. Compare another aircraft: if every aircraft is affected, inspect FS2004's global control settings. If only one add-on is affected, reinstall or reset that aircraft before editing its configuration files.

Why does the joystick move left but not right?

A controller that registers only one side of its travel is usually miscalibrated, reversed or sharing the aileron axis with another device. A mistake we see constantly is leaving a gamepad, throttle quadrant or second joystick assigned to the same axis; its centred or noisy signal can override the intended input.

  • Confirm that the joystick is enabled in FS2004.
  • Calibrate it in Windows and verify that the aileron axis reaches both ends of its range.
  • Assign only one physical axis to the ailerons.
  • Remove duplicate left/right aileron button commands.
  • Check that the axis is not reversed.
  • Use a modest null zone rather than one large enough to swallow much of the right-hand travel.
  • Temporarily unplug other controllers to identify a conflicting device.

Is turning right controlled by the ailerons or rudder?

In the air, a normal right turn begins with right aileron to bank the aircraft, followed by enough back pressure to hold altitude. Right rudder coordinates the turn but does not replace the bank input; using rudder alone mainly produces yaw and sideslip.

If the right aileron visibly deflects but the aircraft still rolls left, increase to a safe flying speed, centre the trim, check for asymmetric engine power and clear any active failures. Propeller effects at high power and low airspeed can require right rudder, but they should not make a healthy right-aileron input completely ineffective.

Why won't the aircraft turn right on the ground?

During taxi, the ailerons do not steer the nose; use the rudder or nosewheel steering instead. The default right-rudder keyboard command is NumPad Enter, while a joystick normally uses its twist axis or separate rudder pedals.

Some aircraft have limited nosewheel authority or a freely castoring nosewheel and therefore need differential braking. Taxi slowly, verify that neither brake axis is stuck or reversed, and check that the right-rudder input reaches full travel. What if only one FS2004 add-on aircraft is affected?

If default aircraft turn correctly, do not reset every controller or edit FS2004 globally. Load the add-on without a saved flight, clear simulated failures, centre all trims and ensure its custom autopilot is disengaged.

A control surface that animates correctly while the aircraft refuses to roll points towards that add-on's flight dynamics or panel logic rather than the joystick. Restore the aircraft's original files or reinstall it from a clean package; editing aircraft.cfg should be a last resort, not the first fix.
