How much memory can FSX use on 64-bit Windows?
An updated, Large Address Aware FSX installation can access a maximum of approximately 4 GB of virtual address space on x64 Windows.
This is an address-space limit rather than a simple measurement of physical RAM use. Aircraft systems, textures, gauges, scenery modules and other DLLs loaded inside FSX.exe all share that space. Mapped files and graphics resources also occupy addresses, so the figure shown for FSX in Task Manager does not tell the whole story. Which FSX versions are Large Address Aware?
FSX: Steam Edition and properly updated boxed installations already have the memory handling needed to approach the 4 GB ceiling on x64 Windows.

Acceleration incorporates the later core updates. For a disc installation, follow the correct boxed-FSX service-pack sequence rather than modifying FSX.exe with a third-party patch.
Will more than 4 GB of installed RAM help FSX?
Yes, but it helps the computer around FSX rather than increasing the limit of FSX.exe.
- Windows has more headroom: the operating system, drivers and background services do not have to compete as heavily with FSX for physical memory.
- Paging may be reduced: having sufficient RAM can prevent storage-related pauses caused by general system memory pressure.
- External add-ons benefit: flight planners, weather engines and other tools running as separate programmes have their own process address spaces.
In-process add-ons are different. A DLL, gauge or module loaded directly by FSX shares its 4 GB address space and can bring an otherwise stable scenery-and-aircraft combination closer to an out-of-memory error.
Why can FSX run out of memory before reaching 4 GB?
FSX can fail below the apparent 4 GB figure because it may be unable to find a sufficiently large, contiguous block of free virtual address space.
Detailed airports, high-resolution textures, complex aircraft, dense autogen, AI traffic and weather can fragment or consume the available addresses. Increasing physical RAM or enlarging the page file does not expand this 32-bit address range.
What should you change first?
Start by identifying the particular aircraft, airport or scenery combination that pushes FSX over its limit.
- Confirm the sim is updated. Boxed FSX should have the supported service packs or Acceleration; Steam Edition is already Large Address Aware.
- Isolate the load. Test the route with a default aircraft or default airport, then restore add-ons one at a time.
- Reduce the largest consumers. Lower dense scenery, autogen, AI traffic, cloud detail or texture-heavy aircraft options before cutting every setting indiscriminately.
- Check scenery overlap. Duplicate or overlapping regional packages can waste memory and cause conflicts without producing a useful visual improvement.
- Restart FSX between demanding flights. A fresh process restores the complete address space and avoids carrying fragmented allocations into the next session.

Can FSX be converted into a 64-bit simulator?
No. Installing FSX on 64-bit Windows or applying a “4 GB patch” does not turn its executable into a 64-bit application.
Such patches only toggle the Large Address Aware flag, which later boxed versions and Steam Edition already use. Applying one again provides no extra memory and may leave a modified executable that an update or Steam file check replaces.
A 64-bit DLL also cannot be loaded directly into the 32-bit FSX.exe; in-process add-ons must be built for FSX. The practical configuration is therefore x64 Windows, a fully updated simulator and enough physical RAM for Windows and companion programmes—while treating roughly 4 GB as the hard address-space limit for everything loaded inside FSX itself.
