FSX and FSX: Steam Edition usually crash or close to desktop mid-flight because the simulator exhausts its 32-bit address space, an add-on aircraft or gauge fails, or faulty scenery loads. Graphics faults, a damaged configuration and system instability are less common. Reproduce the trigger, then isolate one variable at a time.
Is FSX crashing, freezing or running out of memory?
A true crash to desktop makes fsx.exe disappear, while a freeze leaves the process running but unresponsive. If the window remains on screen or Windows marks it as not responding, follow our steps for diagnosing an FSX freeze during flight instead.
An out-of-memory crash may display an error, but FSX can also vanish without one. Both editions remain 32-bit applications, so installing more physical RAM or enlarging the Windows page file does not remove the simulator's finite address-space limit. What usually causes FSX to crash during a flight?
The timing and repeatability of the crash usually reveal which category to investigate.

How do I find the cause of an FSX crash?
The quickest method is to reproduce the failure with progressively simpler content rather than reinstalling everything at once.
- Record the trigger. Note the aircraft, airport, approximate position, flight duration, weather, view and action immediately before the crash. A crash at the same coordinates is different from one occurring after the same elapsed time.
- Check the Windows failure report. Open
View reliability historyfrom the Start menu, select the FSX failure and inspect its technical details. An add-on DLL named as the faulting module is useful evidence. Names such asntdll.dllorKERNELBASE.dllare usually where Windows recorded the failure, not proof that those Windows files are defective. - Establish a stock baseline. Use a default aircraft, default airport, simple weather and zero AI traffic. Disconnect external weather, tracking or utility programs. If this configuration works, restore one component at a time until the crash returns.
- Test the aircraft separately. Fly the original route in a default aircraft, then fly the suspect add-on elsewhere. If only one aircraft fails, remove recent panel, gauge, sound or livery changes and reinstall that aircraft from a clean package if necessary.
- Isolate scenery and traffic. If the crash occurs at the same location, disable recently added scenery layers through the Scenery Library, starting with packages covering that area. Duplicate airport files, damaged scenery files and third-party traffic can all trigger a crash as the next area loads. Do not remove default scenery layers.
- Reduce memory demand. Lower scenery complexity, autogen, texture resolution, cloud detail and AI traffic before repeating the same flight. Changing only one or two settings at a time makes the result meaningful. Switching aircraft and repeatedly loading detailed views during a flight can also increase memory use.
- Rebuild the FSX configuration. Close FSX, open
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\, then find theFSXorFSX-SEfolder used by that installation. Renamefsx.cfgtofsx.cfg.bakand launch the simulator to generate a clean file. If both editions are installed, use the folder whose file timestamp changes when that edition runs. This resets customised display settings and trusted-module approvals, so retain the backup. - Test graphics and system stability. Disable DX10 Preview, remove CPU or GPU overclocks, check temperatures and test a stable graphics driver. Make one change, then repeat the same flight. Random replacement DLL files downloaded from the internet are not a sound fix.
Why does FSX crash at exactly the same place?
A crash at the same coordinates usually points to content being loaded in that area rather than the aircraft itself. Test the location with a default aircraft, no AI traffic and local add-on scenery disabled.
If that works, restore scenery layers individually. If disabling scenery has no effect, restore it and test traffic separately; a particular AI model or flight plan may appear only when the simulator reaches that location and time.
Why does FSX crash near the end of a long flight?
A late-flight crash near a detailed destination is commonly caused by accumulated address-space use. Complex aircraft, high-resolution textures, weather, AI traffic and destination scenery compete within the same 32-bit process, even when the computer has plenty of unused physical RAM.
Choose lower scenery and traffic settings when flying a complex add-on aircraft into a detailed airport. Higher settings are more practical with default aircraft and lighter scenery. Configuration tweaks such as HIGHMEMFIX may address particular texture-handling problems, but they do not convert FSX into a 64-bit application or remove its memory ceiling.
Should I reinstall FSX after a mid-flight crash?
Reinstallation is justified only when stock aircraft and stock scenery still crash after a fresh configuration and core-file repair. Steam users can verify the simulator files, although this may replace modified default files; boxed-edition users should use the appropriate repair process and confirm that required FSX updates are installed.
Reinstalling the simulator will not cure a faulty aircraft, conflicting scenery or memory-heavy setup if those add-ons are restored unchanged. If FSX also fails during startup, loading screens or menu use, work through our broader crash diagnosis for failures outside the flight itself.
