Fix FSX flights that load at full throttle by checking controller axes, stuck key bindings, autothrottle and the saved default flight.
Every FSX or FSX: Steam Edition flight starting at full throttle usually means the simulator is reading an axis at maximum, receiving a duplicated full-throttle command, or loading a default flight saved with the throttle open. Put every lever at idle, test with controllers disconnected, then repair the assignments or replace the default flight.
Is it the saved flight or a controller assignment?
If the throttle stays at idle after you press F1, the saved flight state is probably responsible; if it returns to full power immediately or when a control is touched, a live input is overriding it. Under FSX's default keyboard assignments, F1 cuts the throttle and F4 selects full throttle.

How do I stop FSX forcing full throttle?
Test a stock aircraft with external controllers disconnected, then reconnect each device separately until the full-throttle input returns. This isolates the cause without reinstalling FSX or deleting configuration files.
- Press
F1after the cockpit loads. If the throttle remains at idle, skip to the default-flight reset below. If it goes back to full power, continue checking live inputs. - Restart FSX without controllers. Close the simulator, unplug the joystick, yoke, throttle quadrant and gamepad, then relaunch it. If the fault disappears, reconnect one device at a time and restart FSX after each change.
- Remove duplicate throttle axes. Open FSX's Controls settings and inspect every listed controller. Keep one generic Throttle Axis assignment, or deliberate individual engine axes, but not both. A mistake we see constantly is FSX automatically assigning a joystick slider or gamepad axis alongside the proper throttle quadrant. - Check axis direction and calibration. Move the lever through its full range, return it to idle and watch the virtual cockpit lever. If physical idle produces virtual full power, change the axis's Reverse setting and recalibrate it.
- Inspect button and keyboard bindings. Check the command for full throttle, normally
F4, and remove any duplicate joystick button, controller profile or macro assigned to it. If stock aircraft start correctly but one add-on does not, leave the global controls alone. Disable that aircraft's autothrottle and load an idle or cold-and-dark state through its own panel or state manager.
Any active axis report can overwrite the cockpit lever as the flight loads. For that reason, leave physical throttle levers at idle before selecting Fly Now, particularly after changing aircraft or controller profiles.
How do I reset the FSX default flight?
Create a clean saved flight at idle and mark it as the new default after resolving any live controller input. Otherwise, the bad axis will simply write full throttle into the replacement situation.
- Load a stock aircraft at a parking position.
- Set the throttle to idle with
F1and confirm that it does not move back to full. - Disable autopilot and autothrottle if the selected aircraft has them, then apply the parking brake.
- Save the flight under a new name and select the option that makes it the default flight.
- Start a fresh Free Flight and confirm that the throttle now loads at idle.

If the cockpit throttle is visibly at idle but a jet still accelerates, switch off autothrottle and any active speed-hold mode. In a piston aircraft, also distinguish the throttle from the propeller and mixture controls: a propeller lever set to high RPM is not the same as an open throttle.
Can every FSX flight start cold and dark instead?
Yes, but idle throttle and cold-and-dark are different states: idle leaves the engine running, while cold-and-dark also shuts down the engine, electrical systems and other equipment. You can build and save that state manually or install a replacement cold-and-dark starting situation for FSX.
Complex add-on aircraft may ignore parts of FSX's default situation and restore their own panel state. When that happens, choose the add-on's cold-and-dark preset rather than repeatedly changing the global default flight.
