Find why FSX freezes when loading or flying an add-on aircraft, then isolate bad gauges, files, liveries, dependencies and memory pressure.
In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, freezes with an add-on aircraft usually come from an incompatible gauge or module, a missing dependency, incorrect folder structure, damaged model or texture files, or excessive memory use. Test a default aircraft first, then isolate the add-on's panel, livery and support files before reinstalling it cleanly.
Is FSX frozen or still loading the aircraft?
FSX can display “Not Responding” while it performs aircraft-loading work on its main thread, so the message alone does not prove that it has frozen. If processor or disk activity continues and FSX eventually recovers, the add-on is loading slowly rather than hanging.
A genuine aircraft-related freeze is usually repeatable at the same point: selecting the aircraft, reaching a particular loading percentage, drawing the virtual cockpit, switching views or operating a specific system. Record that point because it identifies which files to inspect.
How can I tell whether the add-on aircraft is at fault?
If a default FSX aircraft works under the same conditions, but the add-on consistently freezes, the aircraft package or one of its dependencies is the likely cause.
- Start with a clean default flight. Use a default aircraft, uncomplicated default airport and basic weather rather than an old saved flight.
- Load the add-on's original livery. Do not begin with an extra repaint or modified panel.
- Change one variable at a time. Try another livery, then another airport, view and aircraft state without changing everything together.
- Note the exact trigger. Check whether the freeze begins when the cockpit appears, avionics start, lights activate or an external view loads.
- Back up before editing. Preserve the aircraft folder and any configuration file you intend to change.
| Test result | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| Only one repaint freezes | That livery's texture folder, fallback configuration or aircraft.cfg entry |
| Every livery of one aircraft freezes | Panel, gauges, model, sound files or a missing dependency |
| Several older add-ons freeze | A shared legacy gauge or module, incompatible component or wrong installation path |
| Default aircraft also freeze | FSX configuration, scenery, weather, drivers or system-wide memory pressure |
Why does FSX freeze while loading the aircraft?
A repeatable freeze during aircraft selection or loading usually points to an incomplete installation, incompatible cockpit component or damaged aircraft file.
Confirm that the main aircraft folder sits directly below SimObjects\Airplanes and contains files such as aircraft.cfg rather than another identically named folder. Our guide to checking FSX aircraft folders and support-file locations covers the structure and common installer mistakes.
Which aircraft files should I check first?
Check the panel and gauges first when FSX freezes as the cockpit appears; check the model and textures when it hangs during preview or external-view loading.
- Panel and gauges: An old
.gaufile, gauge DLL, XML gauge or companion module may be missing or incompatible. Missing gauges often produce empty displays rather than a total freeze, so use our cockpit gauge and blank-instrument checks when the aircraft loads but its panel does not work. - Model files: Restore the original
model.cfgand model files if they were replaced or edited. A bad reference can leave the aircraft incomplete or make FSX fail while creating it. - Liveries: Remove newly installed repaints temporarily. A bad texture conversion, incorrect fallback or mismatched texture folder can affect only one variation.
- Configuration files: Restore known-good copies of
aircraft.cfgandpanel.cfg. Check edits made immediately before the problem began rather than rewriting the files from scratch. - Dependencies: Install only the runtimes, gauges, effects and modules documented for that package. Do not download an unidentified DLL simply because an error mentions the file.
Never delete shared files from the main Gauges, Effects or Modules folders merely to test one aircraft. Other add-ons may depend on them.
How should I reinstall a freezing FSX aircraft?
A clean reinstall is more reliable than copying a new package over a damaged installation.
- Back up personal liveries and edits. Keep them outside the active FSX folders.
- Remove the existing package cleanly. Use its uninstaller when one is supplied; otherwise remove the aircraft's own folder without touching unrelated shared files.
- Install the correct FSX version. Verify the destination rather than trusting an old installer to detect it.
- Add documented support files. Include required gauges, effects, sounds and packaged dependencies.
- Test the base aircraft first. Restore extra liveries and modifications individually only after it completes a flight without freezing.
Why does the add-on aircraft freeze only during flight?
An in-flight freeze often occurs when a gauge, effect, sound or animation is first triggered, or when a complex aircraft pushes FSX's 32-bit process towards its memory limit.
| When the freeze occurs | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| When the cockpit or avionics start | Custom gauges, weather radar, navigation displays and companion modules |
| When lights, smoke, gear or flaps operate | Referenced effects, sounds, animations and configuration edits |
| After switching to an external view | High-resolution textures, the selected livery and external model |
| After flying for some time or entering dense scenery | Memory pressure from aircraft textures, AI traffic, scenery and weather together |
| Only from one saved flight | Corrupted flight data or an incompatible saved aircraft state |
For a suspected memory problem, reduce AI traffic, scenery complexity and aircraft texture load as a controlled test. If that prevents the freeze, restore settings gradually and retain the changes that provide enough headroom. Memory exhaustion may end with an error or crash, but FSX can appear frozen beforehand.
If only a saved flight fails, create a new flight with a default aircraft and then select the add-on. Reset any aircraft-specific saved state using the package's documented method.
Does FSX: Steam Edition require a different fix?
FSX: Steam Edition uses the same general aircraft structure, but older installers may detect a boxed-FSX path or install legacy gauges and modules that do not work correctly in the Steam installation.
Confirm the active Steam library path and avoid pointing an installer at a guessed default folder. Dual boxed-and-Steam installations need particular care because registry detection may select the wrong copy; our Steam Edition add-on compatibility checks explain the main path, gauge and module issues.
Running FSX permanently in Windows compatibility mode or as administrator is not a universal aircraft-freeze fix. Use altered privileges only when the add-on documentation requires them, since mismatched privileges can stop companion programs communicating with FSX.
What should I do if every aircraft freezes?
If default aircraft also freeze, stop treating the add-on as the sole cause and troubleshoot the simulator installation, active scenery, weather tools, configuration and graphics environment.
Back up and rename the active fsx.cfg so FSX can generate a clean configuration, bearing in mind that graphics and control settings will need to be restored. Steam file verification can repair altered default files, but back up intentional modifications first. Our broader FSX freezing and crashing procedure covers these simulator-wide faults without confusing them with a single bad aircraft package.
