Why won’t the fuel truck reach my aircraft in FSX?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix an FSX fuel truck that stalls, circles or never arrives by checking parking position, vehicle routes, traffic settings and add-on scenery.

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, the fuel truck usually cannot reach an aircraft because the parking position is not connected to the airport’s coded vehicle network, even if the apron looks driveable. Park at another recognised stand, leave room around the aircraft, and use Shift+F again.

Why does the fuel truck stop or drive in circles?

A truck that appears but stalls, circles or drives towards the wrong place is usually exposing a problem with the airport layout rather than the fuel command. FSX service vehicles follow routes defined in the airport scenery; painted roads and parking bays are only visual unless the scenery developer also created a connected operational network.

What happensMost likely cause
No truck appearsThe command assignment, Airport Vehicle Density setting or airport’s fuel-service provision
Truck appears but stops or circlesA disconnected vehicle route, inaccessible stand or conflicting airport layout
Truck approaches but remains too far awayA cramped stand or incorrect dimensions in an add-on aircraft package
Problem occurs at one add-on airportThat airport’s parking and service-path configuration
Problem occurs with one aircraft everywhereThe aircraft model or configuration rather than the airport

At a large airport the vehicle may also begin some distance away. FSX does not teleport it beside the aircraft, so give a visibly moving truck time to arrive instead of repeatedly sending the request.

How do I get the FSX fuel truck to my parking spot?

The quickest fix is to reposition the aircraft at a recognised parking stand and test the service under controlled conditions.

  1. Choose a proper parking position. Use the airport selection dialogue to place the aircraft at a listed gate, ramp or parking spot. A visually convincing bay outside the airport’s coded network may be unreachable.
  2. Leave enough clearance. Avoid stands where terminal buildings, static equipment, AI aircraft or tightly placed scenery block the approach. Set the parking brake and keep the aircraft stationary.
  3. Enable airport vehicles. Check the traffic settings and move Airport Vehicle Density above None while testing. Reload the flight if changing the setting has no immediate effect.
  4. Send the correct request. The default fuel-truck command is Shift+F; our FSX keyboard-command reference lists it alongside the other ground-service controls.
  5. Try another stand. If the truck serves a different gate at the same airport, the original stand or its connecting route is faulty.

If Shift+F produces no response anywhere, inspect the assignment rather than the airport route. The steps for checking and changing FSX keyboard controls also cover missing assignments and conflicts in FSX: Steam Edition.

Is the airport or aircraft add-on causing it?

A simple default-airport and default-aircraft test will identify which add-on is responsible.

  • Use a default aircraft at a large default airport. If the truck works, the simulator’s service system and command are functioning.
  • Load the original aircraft at that same airport. If only that aircraft fails, restore its unmodified configuration and model files before attempting manual edits.
  • Use a default aircraft at the problem airport. If the truck still cannot reach the stand, the airport scenery is the cause.

With add-on airports, check for two active airport-layout files covering the same location. Competing layouts can leave visible parking in one position while service vehicles follow another network. Disable only the duplicate or obsolete layout after making a backup; do not remove scenery files at random.

Editing aircraft door or exit definitions will not repair a disconnected airport route. Aircraft geometry can affect where the vehicle stops, but that is worth investigating only when the same aircraft fails across several otherwise working airports.

Can I refuel without waiting for the truck?

Yes—FSX can refuel the aircraft without a service vehicle through its Fuel and Payload controls. This bypasses airport routing entirely; our FSX refuelling instructions explain the available methods and when to use them.

Complex add-on aircraft may manage fuel through their own loader or control panel. Use that system when the aircraft documentation requires it, because changing fuel through the standard FSX dialogue can bypass custom loading logic or produce an unintended weight distribution.
