Where are FSX: Steam Edition saved flights stored?

FSX: Steam Edition stores user-saved flights in C:\Users\<your name>\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files. If Windows redirects Documents to OneDrive, the folder is usually under C:\Users\<your name>\OneDrive\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files. This is the normal location on Windows 10 and Windows 11, separate from FSX configuration files held in AppData.

How do I open the correct FSX saved-flight folder?

Use Windows’ actual Documents location rather than guessing whether it is local or redirected to OneDrive.

1. Open Documents: Press Windows key + R, enter shell:Personal, and press Enter.
2. Open the FSX folder: Double-click Flight Simulator X Files.
3. Check for saved flights: Look for files ending in .FLT, or sort the folder by date modified to find your latest save.

The shortcut %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files also works when Documents has not been redirected. The common mistake is looking inside the Steam installation directory; user-created flights are not normally stored under steamapps\common\FSX.

If the folder does not exist, start FSX: Steam Edition, create a save with a distinctive name, exit the simulator normally and repeat the steps above.

Which files belong to an FSX saved flight?

The .FLT file is the main saved-flight definition, but related files may be needed to reproduce the whole session.

• .FLT: Stores the flight situation, including the selected aircraft, position, time and many simulator states.
• .WX: May accompany the flight with saved weather information. Copy the matching file when moving a save.
• .PLN: Contains a flight plan rather than a complete saved situation. Loading it alone will not restore the aircraft’s position or cockpit state.

Complex add-on aircraft may also keep panel or aircraft-state files in their own folders. An FSX .FLT file does not package the aircraft, livery, scenery or add-on configuration it references. Why are my FSX saved flights missing?

Missing saves are usually in another Documents folder or were never written successfully.

• OneDrive moved Documents: Use shell:Personal to open the location Windows has registered, including organisation-specific OneDrive folders.
• You changed Windows accounts: Each user profile has its own Flight Simulator X Files folder.
• OneDrive was enabled or disabled later: Check both the local Documents folder and the previous OneDrive Documents folder.
• The save failed: Create a test flight, close FSX and check for a new .FLT timestamp. If none appears, review OneDrive sync errors and Windows Controlled folder access rather than running FSX permanently as administrator.
• The files were stored elsewhere manually: Search This PC for *.FLT, then move the required files into the active Flight Simulator X Files folder.

Do boxed FSX and Steam Edition share saved flights?

Boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition normally use the same Documents\Flight Simulator X Files location for a given Windows account. A save can therefore appear in both installations, although it may not load correctly if the required aircraft, livery or scenery exists in only one version.

Their AppData configuration folders can differ, particularly on systems where both editions have been installed. That distinction does not change the normal Documents location used for saved flights.
