How do I install and configure ReShade in MSFS 2024?
Install and configure ReShade for MSFS 2024, choose sensible effects, fix missing overlays and crashes, and remove it safely.
On Windows PC, install ReShade against the actual Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 executable, choose the DirectX 10/11/12 renderer, install only the shader packages you need, then configure a restrained preset through the in-sim overlay. ReShade cannot be installed on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro.
ReShade is a post-processing injector, not a conventional MSFS package. It belongs beside the simulator executable rather than in the Community folder, and its effects can alter the whole rendered image, including cockpit displays, menus and toolbar panels.
Install ReShade in MSFS 2024 step by step
- Establish a stable graphics baseline. Configure and test MSFS 2024 without ReShade first. Our guide to balancing the simulator's graphics settings provides a useful starting point. Record whether you use HDR, TAA, DLSS or another upscaler so that later comparisons remain valid.
- Close the simulator and its launcher. Do not install or update ReShade while MSFS is running.
- Use the unmodified ReShade setup program. The standard installation is sufficient for ordinary colour, sharpening and debanding shaders. Avoid repackaged installers and full add-on components unless a specific, trusted preset genuinely requires them.
- Find the real MSFS 2024 executable. Use your PC platform client's manage or browse-installed-files command. Select the executable that runs the 3D simulator, not a desktop shortcut, launcher, installer or gaming-service process. The installation path varies with the platform and library selected during installation.
- Run the ReShade setup and select that executable. If the simulator does not appear in the automatic list, use the browse option. Do not point the installer at the
Communityfolder. - Select DirectX 10/11/12. ReShade groups these APIs under one installer choice; this is the correct option for MSFS 2024's DirectX renderer. Choosing OpenGL or Vulkan will leave the overlay absent.
- Install a minimal shader set. For a first setup, the standard effects are enough. Install additional packages only when the preset identifies a shader it actually uses; collecting every available effect increases compilation time and makes faults harder to isolate.
- Launch MSFS 2024 and load a flight. ReShade normally displays a banner during launch. Once the 3D view appears, press
Hometo open the overlay, complete its short tutorial and select or create a preset file. - Save the preset somewhere writable. ReShade presets normally use the
.iniextension. Confirm that changes survive a simulator restart before spending time tuning them.
With a protected or packaged PC installation, the setup may report that it cannot write beside the executable. Use the platform client's supported option to move or repair the installation in a user-writable game library; do not take ownership of WindowsApps or weaken its permissions. Running the trusted setup elevated can resolve an ordinary permission prompt, but the simulator should not need to run permanently as administrator.
Which ReShade settings work best for MSFS 2024?
For MSFS 2024, start with one mild sharpening shader and add colour adjustments individually while checking cockpit readability, clouds, night lighting and bright terrain. A preset designed for dramatic screenshots often produces halos, crushed shadows or over-saturated scenery during normal flying.
| Goal | Sensible starting choice | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Improve clarity | Use either CAS or LumaSharpen at a restrained strength | Stacking multiple sharpeners, which exaggerates trees, clouds and glass-cockpit text |
| Adjust colour | Add Curves, Tonemap or Vibrance one at a time | Combining several strong colour shaders without checking shadow and highlight clipping |
| Reduce banding | Use Deband only where gradients genuinely show steps | Excessive settings that soften fine detail or consume needless GPU time |
| Anti-aliasing | Keep the simulator's TAA or upscaler as the primary solution | Adding FXAA or SMAA automatically; post-process AA can blur instruments without fixing temporal shimmer |
| Depth effects | Leave them disabled during initial configuration | Starting with ambient occlusion or depth blur, which cost more and depend on a correctly detected depth buffer |
Use the overlay's effect toggle to compare the complete preset with the unmodified image from the same camera, weather and time of day. Once satisfied, enable ReShade's performance mode where available; turn it off again before editing shader parameters.
HDR and SDR need separate judgement. An SDR preset can crush blacks or distort highlights in HDR, so disable Tonemap, Levels, Curves and similar colour effects first if the picture looks wrong. Configure the preset in the display mode you actually use.
ReShade processing also comes after much of the simulator's image reconstruction. Heavy sharpening can make DLSS or TAA artefacts more visible rather than restore genuine detail. On NVIDIA systems, avoid stacking ReShade with conflicting driver sharpening or forced anti-aliasing; our recommended NVIDIA driver configuration explains which overrides are better left to MSFS.
For VR, do not assume that a desktop preset will produce the same result through an OpenXR headset. Verify the effect inside both eyes, not only in the desktop mirror, and keep depth-dependent effects disabled until ordinary colour and sharpening shaders work correctly.
Why does ReShade not open in MSFS 2024?
ReShade usually fails to open because it was attached to the wrong executable, installed for the wrong graphics API or blocked from writing its files beside the simulator.
- No launch banner and no overlay: rerun the setup, select the real simulator executable and choose DirectX 10/11/12. Files placed in
Communitywill never load ReShade. - Banner appears but
Homedoes nothing: try the keyboard'sFnlayer on a compact keyboard and temporarily clear any conflicting simulator binding. The visible banner proves that injection is already working. - Settings disappear after restarting: the preset or configuration location is not writable. Move the preset to a user-writable folder and select it again through the overlay.
- Effects show compilation errors: the preset references missing, renamed or incompatible shader files. Reinstall only the required shader package or disable the failing effect rather than copying random files into the shader directory.
- MSFS crashes before the menu: uninstall ReShade and confirm the simulator starts cleanly. Then reinstall with only the standard effects and an empty preset. Other post-processing injectors and overlays should be disabled one at a time while testing.
- ReShade vanishes after a simulator repair or update: rerun the setup against the same executable. A repaired installation can replace or detach the graphics hook without deleting the preset itself.
Do not disable security software globally to force an installation. Verify that the setup program is genuine, then address any specific blocked file or protected-folder warning.
How much performance does ReShade cost in MSFS 2024?
ReShade's performance cost depends on resolution, GPU headroom and the selected shaders; simple colour adjustments are generally lighter than depth-based ambient occlusion, blur or complex lighting effects.
Assign an effects-toggle key and compare GPU frame time in one stationary scene after shader compilation has finished. Frame generation can disguise a reduction in the underlying rendered frame rate, so also watch control response and GPU utilisation. ReShade mainly adds GPU work and cannot solve a main-thread, traffic or scenery-streaming bottleneck.
If stutters remain with every effect disabled, use our MSFS 2024 performance troubleshooting steps before reducing the preset further. Likewise, sharpening cannot restore missing terrain data or low level of detail; address the underlying causes of blurry MSFS scenery rather than trying to conceal them with ReShade.
How do I remove ReShade from MSFS 2024?
The safest way to remove ReShade is to rerun its setup program, select the same MSFS 2024 executable and choose the uninstall option.
Back up any custom preset files or screenshots first. Let the installer remove the hook, configuration and shader folders it created rather than deleting unfamiliar DLL files manually; the simulator directory also contains legitimate files that must remain. Launch MSFS afterwards and confirm that the ReShade banner no longer appears.
