Why does FSX: Steam Edition freeze on flight plans?
FSX: Steam Edition usually freezes in the Flight Planner because it is reading a damaged or incompatible .PLN file, an unavailable Documents folder, a broken scenery entry, or an add-on module. Test a fresh short route in a stock aircraft, then isolate plans, scenery and configuration files in that order.
What does the point of the freeze tell you?
The action that triggers the freeze usually identifies which part of FSX is failing.
| Freeze point | Most likely cause | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Opening Flight Planner | Hidden dialogue, configuration fault or module interfering with FSX menus | Switch to windowed mode and disable add-on modules |
| Loading one particular plan | Damaged or incompatible .PLN file | Create and reload a new FSX-format plan |
| Opening the file browser | Unavailable Documents, OneDrive, network or removable-drive location | Browse to a simple local folder |
| Pressing Find Route | Broken scenery path, airport facility file or scenery index | Test two stock airports with add-on scenery disabled |
| After accepting the plan or starting the flight | Aircraft, scenery, weather, traffic or memory pressure | Load the route with a stock aircraft and simple conditions |
An apparently frozen planner may have opened a dialogue behind the full-screen simulator. Use Alt+Tab to check, or Alt+Enter to put FSX into windowed mode before assuming it has stopped responding.
How do I fix an FSX flight plan freeze?
Use a controlled stock test and change one thing at a time, otherwise a successful result will not reveal which component caused the problem.
- Establish a stock baseline. Select a default aircraft, a default airport and simple weather. Try a short direct-GPS route between two stock airports. If necessary, follow our correct process for creating, saving and loading an FSX flight plan so the test itself is valid.
- Test a newly created plan. Save it under a new name, close the planner and load it again. If that works, the original file is probably empty, truncated or written for another simulator. The
.PLNextension alone does not guarantee FSX compatibility; export specifically in FSX format or recreate the route in the built-in planner. - Check the flight-plan folder. FSX normally uses a folder under Documents named something similar to
Flight Simulator X Files; its exact name can differ with side-by-side boxed and Steam installations. Confirm that the folder exists, is stored locally and permits files to be created. If Documents is redirected through OneDrive, a network path or a removed drive, test a new local folder. For Controlled folder access, permitfsx.exerather than disabling Windows security globally. - Isolate active scenery. If Find Route freezes, test the same operation between stock airports. Disable recently installed airport or facility scenery through the Scenery Library, restart FSX and retest. Re-enable entries in groups until the fault returns. Missing scenery paths and malformed airport BGL files matter most here; texture-only scenery and terrain mesh do not normally define the navaids used by the planner.
- Rebuild the generated files separately. Close FSX and back up the relevant simulator folders first. Under
%APPDATA%\Microsoft, the configuration folder is normally calledFSXorFSX-SE, depending on the installation. RenameFSX.cfgand let FSX generate a clean copy. If route calculation still hangs, back up and rename the generatedSceneryIndexesfolder under the corresponding%PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoftsimulator folder. Do not removescenery.cfg. The next start may take longer while FSX rebuilds its indexes. - Test without startup modules. Back up and temporarily rename
dll.xmlandexe.xmlin the FSX configuration folder. This prevents weather engines, external planners, airport tools and other modules from loading. If the planner works, restore the files and isolate their entries one at a time. Our Steam Edition add-on compatibility checks explain the common folder and module-entry problems. - Verify the Steam installation. Use Steam's Installed Files page to verify FSX: Steam Edition. This restores damaged core files, but it does not repair a bad
.PLN, an inaccessible Documents location, third-party scenery or most user configuration faults. Back up any deliberately modified stock files first.
Do not reset the configuration, scenery indexes and add-ons all at once. Renaming one item, testing, and restoring it if nothing changes is slower but gives a definite diagnosis.
Why does only one route or airport freeze?
A single-route freeze usually points to the plan itself or to facility scenery around its origin, destination or waypoints.
The built-in FSX planner reads airports, navaids and intersections from the active FSX scenery database. It does not use the separate navigation database inside a complex add-on aircraft. An externally generated route can therefore contain identifiers that the aircraft recognises but FSX does not; regenerate that plan using FSX data.
For an airport-specific failure, disable the relevant add-on airport and test its stock version. Duplicate airport files more often cause conflicting runways or parking than a total freeze, but a malformed facility BGL or an entry pointing to an unavailable drive can stop route generation.
What if FSX freezes after accepting the flight plan?
A freeze after pressing OK or starting the flight is usually a flight-loading problem rather than a Flight Planner fault.
Retest with a default aircraft, low traffic, simple weather and stock scenery. If loading stops consistently in one region, suspect that region's scenery; if it happens only with one aircraft, suspect its gauges or modules. Our structured FSX crash-isolation procedure covers those cases.
FSX is a 32-bit application, so a complex aircraft combined with dense scenery, weather and AI traffic can also exhaust its address space after the route is accepted. A long route by itself is rarely the cause; use our FSX memory-limit fixes and HIGHMEMFIX guidance when the freeze occurs during flight loading or ends with an out-of-memory message.
