How do I install realistic aircraft sound mods in MSFS 2020?

In short

Learn how to install realistic aircraft sound mods in MSFS 2020, locate the right Community folder, avoid conflicts and fix unchanged audio.

To install an aircraft sound mod in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on PC, extract the download, find the package folder containing manifest.json and layout.json, and place that whole folder in the active Community folder. Remove any competing sound package, restart the simulator, then test the exact aircraft variant the mod supports.

How do I install an MSFS 2020 aircraft sound mod?

A correctly packaged MSFS 2020 sound mod installs like most other Community add-ons, but it must match the aircraft and engine variant for which it was built.

  1. Confirm the supported aircraft. Check the aircraft name, developer and engine variant in the mod description. A package for the default A320neo will not necessarily work with a third-party A320, even when both aircraft look similar.
  2. Read the included instructions. Determine whether the download is a standalone Community package, an installer or a set of replacement files. Do not assume every sound mod uses the same method.
  3. Find the active Community folder. Use the folder inside the packages location recorded by InstalledPackagesPath in MSFS 2020's UserCfg.opt. This matters when the simulator or its content was installed on another drive. Our Community-folder installation guide covers the location checks in more detail.
  4. Extract the package fully. The intended result should resemble Community\publisher-aircraft-sound\manifest.json, with layout.json in the same package root. If those files sit one or two levels deeper inside a download wrapper, move the actual package folder instead.
  5. Remove older sound packages for that aircraft. Two packages trying to replace the same sound resources can produce unchanged, missing or mixed audio. Store the unused package outside the Community folder rather than merely renaming it there.
  6. Restart MSFS 2020 and test the correct aircraft. Packages are scanned during startup, so returning to the main menu is not always enough. Check both cockpit and external views, and test engine start, idle, power changes and shutdown where the mod supports them.

What if the download has no manifest.json?

A download without manifest.json is not a normal standalone Community package, so follow its documented installation method rather than guessing.

Package typeWhat to do
Community packagePlace the complete package root in the Community folder. This is the easiest type to remove or troubleshoot.
InstallerRun the installer and use only the target location specified by its documentation. Check that it supports your MSFS installation and aircraft edition.
Loose replacement filesUse them only when the instructions identify the exact destination. Back up the original aircraft package first; simulator or aircraft updates may overwrite these changes.
Legacy FSX sound folderDo not copy it into MSFS 2020. It is not a compatible MSFS package.

A common mistake we see is copying loose sound files over an aircraft simply because the filenames look familiar. MSFS package indexes and sound banks must agree with those files, so an undocumented replacement can leave the aircraft silent or prevent the override from loading.

Which sound mod will actually sound realistic?

Choose a sound mod by exact aircraft and engine compatibility before judging volume or dramatic effects.

  • Engine variant: Similar aircraft can use different engines with distinct start, spool and power characteristics.
  • Interior and exterior coverage: Some packages replace only cockpit sounds or only the engine sound bank.
  • Operating-state coverage: Check whether the package includes start-up, idle, take-off power, reverse thrust and shutdown rather than one prominent loop.
  • Aircraft dependency: Confirm whether the mod needs a specific freeware, payware or default aircraft package.
  • Installation design: Prefer a removable Community package over direct modification of official aircraft files.

Louder audio is not automatically more authentic. Balance between cockpit insulation, external sound, engine loading and distance matters more. If you are still choosing a package, our shortlist and selection advice for MSFS sound mods explains what to compare.

Why is my MSFS 2020 sound mod not working?

Most non-working sound mods are caused by the wrong Community folder, an extra folder level, an aircraft mismatch or another package overriding the same resources.

  • The sound has not changed: Verify that you selected the exact supported aircraft and engine, not a similarly named default or third-party version.
  • The package is not loading: Open its folder and confirm that manifest.json and layout.json are at the package root rather than buried inside another folder.
  • You have multiple installations: Recheck InstalledPackagesPath. Old Community folders left on another drive have no effect.
  • Audio is missing or mixed: Remove every other sound replacement for that aircraft, restart the simulator and test with only one package installed.
  • It stopped after an update: The simulator or aircraft package may have changed the resources being overridden. Remove the mod until a compatible release is available rather than copying files repeatedly.
  • Only one viewpoint changed: The mod may cover cockpit or external audio only. Check its stated scope before treating this as a fault.
  • The default aircraft is also silent: Check MSFS sound-volume settings and the selected Windows audio device. That points to a simulator or system problem rather than the mod.

For a clean comparison, remove the sound package, restart MSFS and note the default audio. Reinstall only that one package and restart again. This isolates the mod from unrelated aircraft, livery and utility packages.

Can I use FSX aircraft sound packs in MSFS 2020?

FSX sound packs cannot be installed directly in MSFS 2020 because the simulators use different sound systems and package structures.

An MSFS release must be built specifically for the target aircraft rather than copied from an FSX sound folder. Our explanation of why FSX add-ons do not transfer directly to MSFS covers the broader compatibility limits.

Can Xbox users install aircraft sound mods?

Xbox users cannot place third-party sound packages in a Community folder, so manual aircraft sound mods are limited to the PC version of MSFS 2020.

Xbox content must be distributed through the simulator's supported in-game system. See the limits on installing MSFS mods on Xbox before downloading a PC-only sound package.
