What are the best sound mods for Microsoft Flight Simulator?

In short

Compare the best Microsoft Flight Simulator sound mods for engines, cockpit effects, ATC and cabin audio, plus compatibility and installation advice.

The best Microsoft Flight Simulator sound enhancement for most PC users is FSRealistic, which adds touchdown, braking, wind, cabin and airframe effects across many aircraft. For accurate engine and cockpit audio, choose a model-specific pack from FTSiM+, Boris Audio Works or Echo 19 Audio, matched precisely to your aircraft and simulator version.

Which sound mod is best for each use?

FSRealistic is our first choice for simulator-wide immersion, while a dedicated replacement pack is better when accurate engine sound is the priority.

OptionBest forWhat it changesMain caveat
FSRealisticFlying many different aircraftTouchdowns, braking, turbulence, wind, rattles, cabin ambience and optional camera movementIt layers effects over the aircraft; it does not replace the main engine sound
FTSiM+Supported airlinersModel-specific engine, cockpit, reverse-thrust and environmental audioThe pack must match the aircraft developer, engine variant and simulator
Boris Audio WorksSelected high-fidelity aircraftFocused interior and exterior replacement soundsetsAn aircraft update can require a revised sound pack
Echo 19 AudioMilitary and other specifically supported aircraftEngine, airflow, cockpit and external effects, depending on the packIts catalogue is aircraft-specific rather than universal

FSRealistic works best when its profile is tuned for each aircraft. If a study-level add-on already produces tyre, wind or cabin effects, disable the corresponding FSRealistic layer rather than accepting two sounds at once. Its camera movement can also be switched off if only the audio is wanted.

FTSiM+, Boris Audio Works, Echo 19 Audio and Turbine Sound Studios are better choices when a suitable pack exists for one aircraft you fly regularly. None is automatically best across the whole simulator; the exact aircraft integration decides the result.

Match the sound pack to the exact aircraft

A sound pack should name the aircraft developer, model, engine and simulator version explicitly.

  • Aircraft developer: An A320 sound pack made for one developer’s aircraft will not necessarily work with another A320.
  • Engine variant: CFM, IAE, LEAP and Pratt & Whitney installations have different start-up, spool, idle and reverse-thrust characteristics.
  • MSFS edition: Do not assume a Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 package supports Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 unless compatibility is stated.
  • Interior and exterior coverage: Some packs concentrate on cockpit sound, while others substantially revise fly-bys and external engine audio.
  • Replacement or enhancement: A replacement pack changes an aircraft’s existing audio. FSRealistic and cabin utilities add extra layers instead.

A mistake we see constantly is choosing by aircraft family alone. The package name may say 737 or A320, but the underlying sound configuration and package identifiers can differ between developers and variants.

Do sound mods work in MSFS 2024, Xbox and PS5?

PC provides the widest compatibility because it can use Community packages and external companion applications.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 aircraft may use different package structures or integrations from their 2020 equivalents. Some Marketplace aircraft also protect or package their audio in a way that prevents a generic replacement from working, so explicit compatibility matters more than claims that a pack is universal.

Xbox and PlayStation players cannot place arbitrary files in a Community folder or run Windows companion applications. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on Xbox Series X|S and PS5, but Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was never released for PlayStation. On consoles, the practical choices are built-in audio controls and compatible products distributed through the simulator’s supported in-sim system; availability can differ by platform.

Should you adjust MSFS audio before installing a mod?

Many quiet-engine, weak-ATC and over-loud cockpit complaints come from mixer balance or output routing rather than poor source audio.

First select the intended speakers or headset explicitly, then balance aircraft, cockpit, environment, warning and voice categories. Communications may be routed separately from the main simulator output. Our guide to balancing engine, cockpit and ATC levels covers this before extra software complicates the mix.

Temporarily disable operating-system spatial audio and enhancement processing when comparing a pack. Some soundsets already contain positional or filtered cockpit cues, and a second processing layer can make engines sound distant, hollow or phasey.

How do you install an MSFS sound mod without conflicts?

The safest method is to install one aircraft sound replacement at a time and keep it out of the simulator’s Official folder.

  1. Close Microsoft Flight Simulator. Do not change active sound-bank files while the simulator is running.
  2. Confirm compatibility. Check the simulator edition, aircraft developer, model and engine variant.
  3. Remove the old replacement. Move any previous sound pack for that aircraft completely outside the Community folder.
  4. Install by package type. For a Community package, the active package folder should contain files such as manifest.json and layout.json at the expected level. Use the supplied installer for a companion application.
  5. Do not overwrite Official content. Simulator or aircraft updates can replace those files and leave a mixture of incompatible assets.
  6. Test the full flight cycle. Check start-up, idle, take-off, cruise, approach, touchdown and reverse thrust from both cockpit and external views.
  7. Tune added effects. Lower or disable individual touchdown, rattle, wind and cabin layers instead of reducing the entire simulator volume.

Can sound enhancements improve ATC and callouts?

ATC speech, GPWS callouts and cabin announcements are separate from the main aircraft engine soundset.

For more natural radio exchanges, a voice-based ATC service is the relevant upgrade rather than an engine pack. Our comparison of voice-driven ATC add-ons explains the differences between systems such as BeyondATC and SayIntentions.AI, including their external-service requirements.

Altitude, minimums, terrain and crew callouts may be controlled by the aircraft’s EFB, configuration utility or dedicated audio files rather than the main MSFS voice slider. Use the aircraft-specific callout-volume checks before installing a louder replacement.

For airline ambience, passenger applications can add boarding music, safety demonstrations and crew announcements. They are useful alongside an engine pack, but running two cabin utilities together usually produces overlapping announcements and duplicated boarding events.

Why is a sound mod silent, doubled or distorted?

Most sound-mod failures are caused by a wrong aircraft variant, duplicate package, nested installation folder or outdated integration.

  • No audible change: Check that the package is in the active Community folder and has not been extracted one directory too deep.
  • Missing engine sound: Remove the pack and test the unmodified aircraft. An aircraft update may have broken the replacement’s references.
  • Doubled touchdown or wind: Disable the equivalent FSRealistic effect or remove the second enhancement package.
  • Wrong spool or reverse sound: Confirm that the pack was designed for the installed engine variant.
  • Crackling or breakup: Test without the mod, spatial processing and operating-system enhancements. Then follow our audio crackle and distortion checklist to separate a package conflict from an output-device or performance problem.

For a mixed hangar, start with FSRealistic and create restrained per-aircraft profiles. For one favourite airliner or military aircraft, prioritise a compatible model-specific sound pack. Adding both can work well, but only after duplicated touchdown, wind and cabin effects have been removed.
