Install ReShade for Train Simulator Classic correctly: choose the right executable and API, tune effects, and fix overlay, crash and FPS issues.
To install ReShade for Train Simulator Classic, point the ReShade installer at RailWorks64.exe in the game’s RailWorks folder, select DirectX 9 for the normal 64-bit launch mode, install a small shader set, then launch that same mode and use the ReShade overlay to create or select a preset.
Before installing ReShade
ReShade should be the last graphics change you make, not the first. Establish a stable baseline using well-balanced native anti-aliasing, shadow and view-distance settings, because post-processing cannot repair low draw distance, poor textures or missing shadows.
Check the RailWorks folder for an existing d3d9.dll, dxgi.dll, ReShade.ini or reshade-shaders directory. Back up anything already there rather than overwriting it: another graphics injector may use the same wrapper filename, and two injectors competing for it commonly cause crashes.
How do I install ReShade for Train Simulator Classic?
The reliable method is to install ReShade for one specific Train Simulator Classic executable and graphics API, then keep using that launch mode.
- Choose your TSC launch mode. For most players, use the normal 64-bit mode and
RailWorks64.exe. Avoid switching to the 32-bit executable afterwards because its DLL architecture differs; remove and reinstall ReShade for the other executable if you genuinely need to change modes. - Open the RailWorks directory. In Steam, use the game’s option to browse local files rather than assuming it is on drive C. - Close Train Simulator Classic. Download an unmodified standard ReShade installer from the project’s official source, then run it. Administrator rights should only be needed if Windows prevents changes to the game directory.
- Select the game executable. Browse to
RailWorks64.exe, not a Steam shortcut or launcher. ChooseRailWorks.exeonly when you intentionally run the 32-bit edition. - Select the rendering API. Choose DirectX 9 for the normal Train Simulator Classic launch mode. If you deliberately run its experimental DirectX 12 option, select the executable used by that mode and choose ReShade’s DirectX 10/11/12 option instead. Configure one mode first rather than mixing wrappers while troubleshooting.
- Install a small effect set. The standard effects are enough for initial colour, contrast, sharpening and anti-aliasing adjustments. Installing every optional shader makes compilation slower and leaves a cluttered effect list.
- Launch the same TSC mode. A ReShade banner should appear near the top of the screen while its effects compile. Press
Home, orFnplusHomeon some keyboards, to open the overlay and complete its introductory prompts. - Create or select a preset. Save the preset with a recognisable name. If ReShade cannot write the file inside
RailWorks, use a user-writable folder and select that preset through the overlay rather than running the simulator permanently as administrator.
How should ReShade be configured for Train Simulator Classic?
Start with every effect disabled, then enable one effect at a time while viewing the same train, route, weather and camera position. This makes colour clipping, halos and performance losses much easier to identify.

Keep the colour changes restrained and test them in daylight, darkness, rain, tunnels, cab view and external view. ReShade processes the completed frame, so most effects also alter menus, HUD text and driving overlays.
Assign the overlay and global effect-toggle keys to controls that Train Simulator Classic does not already use. If your ReShade version offers a performance mode, leave it off while editing and enable it only after the preset is settled.
A downloaded preset should normally be a text-based .ini configuration. Do not replace your known ReShade DLL with an unknown d3d9.dll or dxgi.dll supplied alongside a preset. Missing-effect messages usually mean that the required shader package has not been installed.
Why is ReShade not opening or working?
A missing overlay almost always means ReShade was attached to the wrong executable, installed for the wrong graphics API or blocked from loading.
- No startup banner or overlay: look for
ReShade.logbeside the selected executable. No log usually indicates the wrong executable, API or DLL architecture. Confirm that you launched the same 64-bit, 32-bit or DirectX 12 mode selected during installation. - Overlay opens but effects do nothing: confirm that a preset is selected, its effects are enabled and the shader and texture search paths point to the installed
reshade-shadersfolders. - Shader compilation errors: reinstall the required effect package or disable that individual shader. One failed shader does not necessarily mean the whole ReShade installation is broken.
- Crash or black screen at launch: uninstall ReShade temporarily and test TSC without it. Check for an older graphics injector using the same wrapper DLL and make sure DirectX 9 was not selected for a DirectX 12 launch, or vice versa.
- Broken depth effects: disable ambient occlusion, depth of field and other depth-dependent shaders. Train Simulator Classic’s depth information is not consistently suitable across every camera, route and graphics configuration.

Steam’s file verification generally does not remove extra third-party ReShade files, so a successful verification does not prove that ReShade has been uninstalled.
How do I update or remove ReShade?
Run the ReShade installer again, select the same Train Simulator Classic executable and use its update or uninstall option. Back up your preset and ReShade.ini first if you want to retain key bindings and effect settings.
Manual removal should be a fallback only. Remove the ReShade-created wrapper for the selected API, its configuration and log files, and the reshade-shaders folder, but never delete d3d9.dll or dxgi.dll until you have confirmed that ReShade installed it rather than another tool.
