Learn how to set dynamic weather in Train Simulator Classic, choose time and season, edit scenarios, and fix weather changes that fail to appear.
In Train Simulator Classic, set time, season and a weather preset before starting Quick Drive, or edit those fields in a scenario’s properties. There is no universal live-weather switch: changing conditions require a dynamic weather-pattern blueprint selected by the scenario. Route-level environment blueprints control the sky, lighting, fog and overall colour.
How do I set weather, season and time?
For a one-off session, configure the environment on the Quick Drive setup screen before loading the route.
- Open Quick Drive and choose the train, route, departure point and destination.
- Set the start time for the lighting conditions you want.
- Select a season to load the route’s available seasonal ground, vegetation and scenery textures.
- Choose a weather preset, such as clear, overcast, rain, snow or an installed dynamic pattern.
- Start the session. Return to the setup screen and reload the drive if you want to replace those choices.

Editing an authored scenario
An existing Standard, Career or Free Roam scenario normally uses the environment chosen by its creator; the pause menu is not a weather editor. We recommend changing a cloned copy rather than the original, particularly for supplied or Workshop scenarios that may later be restored or updated.
- Clone the scenario from the scenario management or editor interface.
- Open the copy in the scenario editor.
- Select its scenario marker or properties. The precise panel layout varies, but look for start time, season and weather or weather-pattern fields.
- Choose the required values from the installed options. A custom dynamic pattern must already exist as an available asset.
- Save and leave the editor, then load the scenario again so the route environment is rebuilt.

What does dynamic weather mean in Train Simulator Classic?
Dynamic weather means that an authored weather-pattern blueprint changes conditions as the scenario progresses; it does not mean live weather downloaded from the internet.
A pattern can move between weather states and alter elements such as cloud, precipitation, fog and visibility. The progression and transitions are defined by the asset, so selecting an ordinary rain or overcast blueprint does not make it change automatically. Preset names are not always descriptive enough to reveal whether a pattern is static or dynamic.
The normal scenario editor can select a compatible installed pattern, but it cannot convert a static preset into changing weather with a simple checkbox. Creating a new pattern is add-on authoring work involving the Blueprint Editor, referenced weather assets and the correct provider/product setup.
Time advances during the drive, but the season remains fixed because seasonal scenery is loaded at the start. Dynamic snowfall therefore cannot switch summer vegetation and ground textures to their winter versions halfway through a scenario.
Which environment settings should I change?
Choose the setting level according to whether you want to alter one drive, the simulator’s rendering quality or the appearance of an entire route.

A mistake we see constantly is using graphics options to try to replace scenario weather. Dynamic Lighting and shadows affect how a rainy evening is rendered, but they do not change a clear scenario into a wet one. Route-level environment changes are much broader. They may affect every scenario using that route and can introduce missing references if the required provider assets are unavailable. Clone or back up the route before replacing its environment assets; use scenario weather when only one drive needs changing.
Why are my weather changes not appearing?
Weather changes usually fail because the wrong scenario was edited, the session was not reloaded or the selected preset is static.
- The route was already loaded: leave the drive and reload it. Several environmental elements are initialised only when the scenario starts.
- The wrong scenario copy was changed: verify that you are launching the clone rather than the supplied original or another service with a similar name.
- Weather and season do not match: snowfall and winter scenery are separate choices. Select winter as well as snowy weather when you want seasonal textures, provided the route includes them.
- The preset is static: clear, rain or overcast may remain unchanged for the entire drive. Select an actual weather-pattern blueprint if conditions must develop over time.
- An asset dependency is missing: a third-party pattern may be absent from the selector or display incorrectly when its provider assets are not installed and available.
- The effect is stock-specific: rain can be present even if a particular cab has no animated wipers or windscreen droplets.
- The route uses a different environment: identical weather presets can look different under another route’s sky, lighting and fog configuration.
To isolate the fault, load the same route in Quick Drive with a built-in rain preset. If rain appears there, the renderer is working and the problem lies with the edited scenario or weather pattern. If it does not, temporarily restore ordinary graphics settings and check that the required route and weather assets are present.
