Run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 on Windows 10 or 11 with practical install, CD-check, graphics, compatibility-mode and virtual-machine fixes.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 can sometimes run directly on Windows 10 or 11, but it is not officially supported on either system. Install it outside Program Files, use compatibility settings, and start with windowed or software-rendered graphics. If the installer, legacy CD check or display still fails, use an offline 32-bit Windows XP virtual machine.
How do I install FS2000 on Windows 10 or 11?
The cleanest native installation keeps FS2000 in a simple, writable folder and changes only the compatibility settings it actually needs.
- Use legitimate original media. Insert the CD or mount a disc image made from your own media. If AutoPlay does nothing, open the disc in File Explorer and run its setup program manually.
- Apply installer compatibility only if setup fails. Right-click the setup program, open Properties and select the Compatibility tab. Try Windows XP Service Pack 3 with “Run this program as an administrator”; if that fails, retry with Windows 98/Windows Me compatibility.
- Choose a folder outside Program Files. A path such as
C:\Games\FS2000avoids the permission and file-virtualisation problems that affect older add-ons, configuration files and installers. - Do not force the old DirectX installer. Windows 10 and 11 already contain newer DirectX components. If FS2000 specifically reports that DirectPlay is missing, enable DirectPlay under Windows Features, Legacy Components; it is mainly relevant to the simulator’s old multiplayer system.
- Configure the main FS2000 executable. Start with Windows XP compatibility. Disable fullscreen optimisations if the screen goes black, and use the high-DPI override set to Application if menus appear incorrectly scaled.
- Test a stock flight before adding anything. Begin in windowed mode or press
Alt+Enterafter launch. Use a conservative 4:3 resolution and select software rendering if hardware acceleration produces corrupted colours, missing textures or a crash.
Running the simulator permanently as administrator should not be necessary when it is installed in a writable folder. Use that option for the first launch or only when settings refuse to save.
Why does Flight Simulator 2000 not start?
A failed FS2000 launch usually points to the installer, legacy CD protection or obsolete graphics behaviour rather than insufficient PC performance.
- AutoPlay opens nothing: browse the CD and run the setup program directly. Modern Windows commonly disables old AutoRun behaviour.
- “This app can’t run on your PC” appears: the installer may contain 16-bit code that cannot execute on 64-bit Windows. Compatibility mode cannot add 16-bit application support; use a 32-bit guest operating system in a virtual machine.
- The correct CD is rejected: some disc editions rely on a legacy copy-protection driver that Windows 10 and 11 no longer permit. Compatibility mode cannot restore that driver. Do not install an untrusted driver or modified executable; use the original disc within an older offline virtual machine instead.
- The screen is black or colours are wrong: switch to windowed mode, disable fullscreen optimisations and try FS2000’s software renderer. Reduced-colour compatibility mode can also help with palette corruption, but should not be enabled unless needed.
- Settings or logbook changes disappear: move or reinstall FS2000 outside
Program Files, then confirm that your Windows account can write to the simulator folder.
A modern optical drive being able to read the CD’s files does not prove that the old launch-time disc check will work. Installation and copy-protection checks are separate operations.
Is compatibility mode enough, or should I use a virtual machine?
Use compatibility mode first when FS2000 installs and recognises its CD; use a virtual machine when setup contains unsupported code, the disc check is blocked or modern graphics drivers remain unstable.

Compatibility mode changes selected Windows behaviours; it does not emulate an old PC, run 16-bit applications on a 64-bit host or restore removed copy-protection drivers. For the virtual-machine route, use your own licensed copy of 32-bit Windows XP, keep networking disabled, pass through the original optical drive when necessary and select software rendering inside FS2000.
If the guest can read files but the simulator still rejects the CD, try physical optical-drive pass-through rather than a mounted image. Some old checks do not behave correctly through every virtual optical drive.
Will FS2000 add-ons and joysticks still work?
FS2000 add-ons and basic USB joysticks can still work, provided the base simulator is stable and Windows exposes the controller through DirectInput.
Do not install add-ons until a stock aircraft loads and flies correctly. Then add one package at a time from our period-compatible FS98 and FS2000 downloads library, preserving the folder structure supplied by its author. For a joystick, confirm that axes and buttons respond in Windows’ USB game-controller panel before launching FS2000. Start with one controller connected, calibrate it inside the simulator and add other devices later; FS2000 predates today’s multi-device yoke, throttle and pedal setups. Basic axes usually work, while force feedback and proprietary control software are much less dependable on modern Windows.
