To get real-time weather in a flight simulator, connect the simulator to the internet, enable its Live Weather, Real Weather or online weather source, and use the present date and time. If that service is unsupported or has closed, install a compatible external weather engine and disable the built-in source.
This answer applies to flight simulators generally; the wording and capabilities vary by simulator and platform. Real-time weather is normally near-live, not instantaneous. It combines observations, forecast models and interpolation, so it may lag by several minutes and will not reproduce every cloud or gust exactly.
How do I turn on real-time weather in a flight game?
- Enable online data. Connecting the computer or console to the internet is not always enough. The simulator's online functionality, data services or weather downloads must also be enabled, and some services require the user account to be signed in.
- Use the present date and time. Synchronising the flight with the present local or UTC time keeps daylight, seasonal conditions and weather aligned. Selecting an old date does not usually request historical weather.
- Select the live source. Look for
Live Weather,Real Weather,Real-World Weatheror an equivalent online option. Select it before loading the flight where the simulator permits this. - Allow it to initialise. The first download and weather build can take a short time after the cockpit loads. Switching to a preset or moving a weather-editor slider normally replaces the live source.
- Verify it at a reporting airport. Compare surface wind, visibility and pressure with a recent METAR from the same airport. Clear skies at one location may be correct; calm, clear conditions across several reporting airports usually indicate a failed download.
- Run one weather source only. A built-in service and an external injector can overwrite one another, producing abrupt changes, repeated resets or weather that never settles.
Menu names change with localisation. A Russian interface may place weather under Погода; Spanish interfaces commonly use Clima or Tiempo. Within that area, choose the translated equivalent of live, real or online weather rather than a named preset.

On consoles, the built-in service is normally the only practical choice because desktop weather engines cannot be installed. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is available on PC and Xbox only. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 also supports PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, where its built-in Live Weather should be used.
Will live flight weather work on a Windows laptop?
Live weather works on a Windows laptop if the simulator supports it and the laptop has an internet connection; a separate Windows weather app or browser page does not feed conditions into the simulator. Keep the Windows clock and time zone correct, particularly when the simulator synchronises time automatically.
The weather download itself is usually light compared with streamed scenery. The larger performance cost comes from rendering volumetric clouds, precipitation, shadows and reflections. If frame rate falls only in overcast or stormy conditions, reduce the simulator's cloud or weather-detail setting rather than disabling online weather.
Laptop sleep, a metered connection, account sign-out or blocked online functionality can freeze updates. An external engine may also need permission through the Windows firewall to communicate with the simulator, whereas built-in weather is handled through the simulator's own online connection.
Should I use Live Weather, a weather editor or an external engine?
Choose the source according to the flight you want to reproduce, not simply the option with the longest feature list.
- Built-in Live Weather: best for flying in approximate present conditions with the least setup. Start here in a simulator whose online service is supported.
- Weather editor or preset: best for a fixed training scenario, screenshots or repeatable testing. It creates custom conditions but is not a real-time feed.
- External weather engine: useful when a legacy service has closed, when the built-in feed is unreliable, or when the engine explicitly offers required features such as archived weather.

A mistake we see constantly is leaving Live Weather active while an external engine is also injecting. Use one data source. Before installing an engine, confirm that it supports the exact simulator, release and operating platform rather than assuming that an FSX or older Prepar3D utility will work elsewhere.
Why does live weather not match the METAR exactly?
A METAR is a time-stamped surface observation at one airport, while the simulator must construct a three-dimensional atmosphere between stations. It may combine that report with forecast-model clouds, winds aloft and nearby observations, then smooth changes as the aircraft moves.
Before treating a difference as a fault, check:
- the same ICAO airport and the report's UTC timestamp;
- surface conditions rather than winds or temperature at altitude;
- units such as knots, hectopascals and inches of mercury;
- true-versus-magnetic wind presentation;
- whether the in-simulator ATIS is on a separate update cycle.
Pressure, visibility and surface wind should normally be recognisable when the report is fresh. Exact cloud shapes, precipitation boundaries and individual gusts will differ. A completely unrelated wind or pressure reading at several airports points to stale data, the wrong source or a failed update rather than normal interpolation.
How do I fix flight weather that stays clear or stops updating?

For a clean reset, close any external injector, return to the simulator's main menu, confirm online functionality, select live weather again and load at a major reporting airport. Wait for the initial update before editing anything. If several airports remain identically clear after a full simulator restart, the online weather service may be unavailable; use a preset until it returns.
Can real-time weather be used with a past date or time?
Live weather usually supplies the latest available conditions even when the simulator clock is set to an earlier date. Changing the time may alter sunlight without changing the weather report, creating a flight that looks historical but uses present-day conditions.
For a past flight, use a simulator or compatible engine that explicitly supports archived weather. Otherwise, build a manual preset from the historical surface report, understanding that a METAR alone cannot reconstruct the complete cloud field, winds aloft or weather between airports.
