  1. Enable online data. Connecting the computer or console to the internet is not always enough. The simulator's online functionality, data services or weather downloads must also be enabled, and some services require the user account to be signed in.
  2. Use the present date and time. Synchronising the flight with the present local or UTC time keeps daylight, seasonal conditions and weather aligned. Selecting an old date does not usually request historical weather.
  3. Select the live source. Look for Live Weather, Real Weather, Real-World Weather or an equivalent online option. Select it before loading the flight where the simulator permits this.
  4. Allow it to initialise. The first download and weather build can take a short time after the cockpit loads. Switching to a preset or moving a weather-editor slider normally replaces the live source.

The weather download itself is usually light compared with streamed scenery. The larger performance cost comes from rendering volumetric clouds, precipitation, shadows and reflections. If frame rate falls only in overcast or stormy conditions, reduce the simulator's cloud or weather-detail setting rather than disabling online weather.

Laptop sleep, a metered connection, account sign-out or blocked online functionality can freeze updates. An external engine may also need permission through the Windows firewall to communicate with the simulator, whereas built-in weather is handled through the simulator's own online connection.

  • the same ICAO airport and the report's UTC timestamp;
  • surface conditions rather than winds or temperature at altitude;
  • units such as knots, hectopascals and inches of mercury;
  • true-versus-magnetic wind presentation;

Pressure, visibility and surface wind should normally be recognisable when the report is fresh. Exact cloud shapes, precipitation boundaries and individual gusts will differ. Can real-time weather be used with a past date or time?
