Why are airport terminals and buildings missing in X-Plane 12?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix missing airport buildings in X-Plane 12 by checking object density, scenery order, libraries, orthophotos and Log.txt errors.

Airport terminals and buildings are usually missing in X-Plane 12 because the airport scenery is being overridden, its required object library is absent, an orthophoto mesh is ordered too high, or World Objects Density is set too low. Some airports also contain only runways and taxiways, with no 3D terminal model.

What usually causes missing airport buildings?

The pattern of missing scenery normally identifies which layer or package has failed.

How do I restore missing airport buildings?

Check the display setting first, then work through scenery priority, dependencies and logged errors in that order.

  1. Establish the scope. Load a large default airport as well as the affected airport. If buildings are missing everywhere, concentrate on graphics settings and the core installation; if only one location is affected, concentrate on its scenery package.
  2. Raise World Objects Density. Open X-Plane 12's graphics settings and move World Objects Density above its lowest level. Low settings can suppress terminal sections, hangars, parked equipment and surrounding buildings. Restart or reload the flight after applying the change.
  3. Inspect the scenery order. Open Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini. Custom airports should normally be above the Global Airports entry, while orthophoto and other base-mesh packages belong near the bottom. Generated overlays belong above their associated mesh but below airport scenery. Also check that the airport has not been marked SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED. Our guide to correct scenery placement and priority explains the folder and loading-order checks in detail.
  4. Read the log immediately after reproducing the problem. Close X-Plane and inspect Log.txt in the simulator's main folder. Search for the airport identifier, package name, Failed to find resource and scenery-loading errors. The log is replaced on another launch, so inspect the run in which the buildings were missing.
  5. Check required libraries. A custom airport can load its pavement while omitting terminals because those terminals reference objects or facades from an absent shared library. Confirm that every documented dependency is installed, enabled and not buried inside an extra nested folder. Follow our checks for fixing missing X-Plane scenery libraries rather than moving every library to the top of the scenery list; ordinary libraries need to be installed correctly, not treated as airport layers.
  6. Disable conflicting scenery temporarily. Disable duplicate airports, broad regional packages and anything installed just before the problem began. A higher-priority package may contain exclusion zones that erase the default terminal without supplying a replacement. If the stock buildings return, re-enable packages one at a time to identify the conflict.
  7. Repair the installation only if the fault is widespread. If numerous default airports remain empty with normal object density and no custom packages active, use the installation method's verify or repair function. This restores missing core scenery without requiring an immediate full reinstall.

Can orthophoto scenery hide airport terminals?

Orthophoto scenery can hide airport buildings when its base mesh is placed above airport or overlay entries in scenery_packs.ini.

Photographic ground textures do not normally include terminal models. They need higher-priority airport and building overlays to provide 3D objects, roads and autogen. If the problem started after adding imagery, compare the package order with our orthophoto installation and layer-order guidance.

Why are buildings missing at only one airport?

A single runway-only airport usually indicates an incomplete 2D airport, a faulty custom package or an exclusion conflict rather than a global X-Plane 12 problem.

Disable the custom airport and reload the location. If default terminals return, the add-on is overriding them incorrectly or is missing dependencies. If nothing returns and Log.txt shows no errors, that airport may simply lack 3D objects in the installed scenery data.

Airport authors and users inspecting a package should remember that runways, facades, objects and exclusion zones are separate elements. Our explanation of airport scenery layers in WED helps distinguish an intentionally simple layout from one whose terminal objects are genuinely missing.

Should I delete scenery_packs.ini or reinstall X-Plane 12?

Deleting files or reinstalling the whole simulator should not be the first fix for missing terminals.

X-Plane can rebuild scenery_packs.ini, but the regenerated order may still place newly discovered packages incorrectly, leaving the original conflict unresolved. Make a backup and correct the relevant entries instead. Reinstall or repair only when default airports are affected across the simulator and the log or installation check points to missing core files.
