MSFS 2020 or 2024: which is better for VATSIM?

Ian Stephens
In short

Compare MSFS 2020 and 2024 for VATSIM: vPilot support, aircraft compatibility, model matching, stability and which version suits your PC.

For VATSIM, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is the safer choice for mature aircraft, add-on compatibility and predictable stability. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is better if your preferred aircraft, model-matching package and utilities are confirmed compatible and it runs reliably on your PC. Both connect through vPilot on Windows.

MSFS 2020 vs 2024 for VATSIM

For network connectivity, neither simulator has an ATC advantage. Both use vPilot and SimConnect to send position, radio and transponder data; the meaningful differences are aircraft support, model matching, performance and reliability.

VATSIM does not benefit directly from prettier scenery or a newer career system. Those factors may still affect your choice, so our explanation of the wider differences in streaming, physics and add-on handling covers them separately.

Which version should I choose for VATSIM?

Choose MSFS 2020 when reliability and established add-on support take priority; choose MSFS 2024 when your complete VATSIM setup has been tested in that simulator.

Choose MSFS 2020 when:

An established 2020 installation is the lower-risk option for organised flights and busy events.

  • Your preferred airliner or avionics package supports only MSFS 2020.
  • You already have dependable model matching, scenery and utilities.
  • Your internet connection has limited headroom for additional cloud streaming.
  • You can complete long flights without crashes, severe stutters or avionics failures.
  • You do not need MSFS 2024's other features enough to justify rebuilding the installation.

Choose MSFS 2024 when:

MSFS 2024 is a sound VATSIM platform once every component in the chain works together.

  • Your aircraft, model-matching package and supporting utilities explicitly support 2024.
  • You have tested the aircraft's COM radios and transponder with vPilot.
  • The simulator remains stable at dense airports with network traffic displayed.
  • Your PC and internet connection handle its streaming demands without disrupting voice communications.

Meeting a simulator's minimum specification does not guarantee acceptable performance at a crowded VATSIM event. Our PC hardware guidance for both simulator generations explains the practical CPU, GPU, memory and storage considerations.

What do I need for VATSIM in either simulator?

A working VATSIM installation needs a Windows PC, compatible vPilot release, suitable aircraft and correctly configured model matching.

  1. Use the PC edition: vPilot must run alongside Microsoft Flight Simulator and communicate through SimConnect.
  2. Install compatible client software: use a vPilot build that explicitly supports your chosen simulator. vPilot is a desktop application, not a Community-folder add-on.
  3. Check your aircraft: confirm that its active COM radio, audio panel and transponder state are exposed correctly. An aircraft loading successfully does not prove those systems work with vPilot.
  4. Configure model matching: install a traffic model package and matching rules intended or confirmed for that simulator. Model matching controls how other pilots appear; it does not affect your ability to connect.
  5. Disable competing traffic: turn off simulator multiplayer, live traffic and offline AI traffic to prevent duplicate aircraft. Setting parked-aircraft density low or zero also stops static models occupying assigned stands.
  6. Test before a busy flight: load at a quiet parking stand, connect with the correct callsign and aircraft type, then verify reception, transmission, radio tuning and transponder modes.

Assign push-to-talk inside vPilot even if the simulator already has a radio binding. FSUIPC is not required for a basic VATSIM connection because vPilot communicates through SimConnect.

Can I reuse MSFS 2020 VATSIM add-ons in 2024?

Some MSFS 2020 assets work in MSFS 2024, but copying the entire Community folder is a mistake. Flyable aircraft, traffic models, scenery and utilities must each be checked for 2024 compatibility.

The two simulators can use different package locations, and model-matching rules may reference internal model names that are missing or changed in 2024. Keep their Community folders separate and add packages individually. Our guide to selecting MSFS aircraft and utilities helps identify the add-on categories involved, but compatibility still needs checking item by item.

What causes VATSIM problems in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Most VATSIM faults come from traffic settings, model packages, aircraft integration or overloaded hardware rather than the VATSIM network itself.

  • Other aircraft are invisible or incorrect: confirm that the model package is installed in the active Community folder and that vPilot has loaded the matching rules. A fallback livery or aircraft type is usually a model-matching problem, not a failed connection.
  • Traffic appears twice: disable the simulator's own multiplayer and AI traffic. vPilot should be the only source of moving network aircraft.
  • Busy airports stutter or crash: reduce the number of displayed network aircraft, lower demanding terrain and object settings, and avoid traffic models designed as highly detailed flyable aircraft.
  • ATC cannot hear you: check the vPilot input device and push-to-talk assignment, then confirm that the correct COM radio is active rather than in standby.
  • The transponder state is wrong: verify the aircraft's avionics and transponder controls. Compatibility-mode aircraft can appear functional while failing to pass the expected state through SimConnect.
  • A SID, STAR or waypoint is missing: this is normally a navigation-database mismatch inside the aircraft, not a difference between VATSIM support in MSFS 2020 and 2024.

Does VATSIM work on Xbox or PlayStation?

VATSIM is not usable with the console editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Normal operation requires vPilot on Windows and SimConnect access, which the Xbox and PlayStation versions do not provide.

MSFS 2020 remains available only on PC and Xbox, while MSFS 2024 is also available on PS5 and PS5 Pro. Those platform differences do not change the requirement to use the Windows PC edition for VATSIM.

The practical verdict

MSFS 2020 is the better default recommendation for a dependable VATSIM installation, particularly if you already own compatible aircraft and utilities. There is no network benefit in changing simulators solely for VATSIM.

MSFS 2024 becomes the better choice when your exact aircraft, traffic models and utilities support it and the simulator remains stable under realistic traffic loads. A complete flight without radio, transponder, performance or add-on failures matters far more than the simulator's release date.
