Is there an OH-6A Cayuse mod for DCS World, and how do I install it?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Yes—the free DCS World OH-6A Cayuse mod installs in Saved Games. Get the correct folder layout and fixes when the helicopter does not appear.

Yes. The free OH-6A Cayuse is available as an unofficial community aircraft mod for DCS World, rather than a paid Eagle Dynamics module. Install its extracted aircraft folder under the active DCS Saved Games profile, not the main game directory, then restart DCS and add an OH-6A player slot in the Mission Editor.

Does the OH-6A mod require another DCS module?

The standard community release is a standalone Saved Games aircraft mod and does not normally require the UH-1H or another paid helicopter. It remains third-party software, so its supported features and compatibility depend on the particular release.

Use a clean copy of the latest developer release and read any notes included with it. Avoid merging a new build over an old one because obsolete scripts are a common cause of loading errors.

How do I install the OH-6A Cayuse mod?

Install the OH-6A inside the Mods\aircraft directory belonging to the DCS profile that the simulator actually uses.

  1. Close DCS World. The simulator should not be running while its aircraft directories are changed.
  2. Remove an older OH-6A installation. Delete only the previous OH-6A folder from Saved Games; do not merge releases. Back up any personal configuration files first if the mod’s documentation identifies them.
  3. Find the active DCS profile. Most unified installations use %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS. An older or retained profile may instead be named DCS.openbeta. Use the folder containing your active Config, Logs and mission data.
  4. Create the mod path if necessary. The required structure is Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft, substituting the actual profile name where appropriate.
  5. Extract the release package. If the archive contains Mods\aircraft\OH-6A, merge its Mods folder into the active DCS profile. If it opens directly to an OH-6A aircraft folder, copy that folder into Mods\aircraft.
  6. Check the final folder depth. The result should resemble %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\OH-6A\entry.lua. The precise aircraft-folder name can vary by package, but entry.lua must be in the module’s root rather than inside a second identically named folder.
  7. Restart DCS and test the aircraft. Open the Mission Editor, place a helicopter group and look for the OH-6A in the aircraft type list.

Do not install it under the main DCS World installation’s Mods or CoreMods directories. Our full DCS Saved Games mod-installation walkthrough explains the profile structure in more detail.

How do I know whether the OH-6A installed correctly?

A successful installation makes the OH-6A available as a helicopter type in the Mission Editor.

  • Create a simple mission with the United States or another country supported by that release on the appropriate coalition.
  • Add a helicopter group and select the OH-6A as its type.
  • Set its skill to Player for single-player or Client for a multiplayer slot.
  • Start the mission and confirm that the cockpit loads without a missing-module warning.

The mod does not need to appear in the paid-module manager for this test to succeed. Included training, instant-action or campaign missions are release-dependent, so their absence does not by itself indicate a failed installation.

Why is the OH-6A not showing in DCS World?

An incorrect folder level or the wrong Saved Games profile causes most missing-aircraft reports.

Which controls should I bind first?

Bind cyclic pitch and roll, collective, anti-torque pedals and the mod’s trim controls before attempting a flight.

Check every connected controller column because DCS often creates duplicate axis assignments automatically. Throttle, starter and weapon controls depend on the release and mission fit; our helicopter axis and trim set-up guide covers the essential response curves and conflict checks without assuming a particular joystick.

Will a DCS update break the OH-6A mod?

A DCS update will not normally delete an OH-6A installed in Saved Games, but simulator changes can make a community release incompatible.

If trouble begins immediately after an update, remove the mod temporarily and verify that DCS starts normally. Then install a release marked for the updated simulator rather than copying new files over the old directory. Our mod compatibility checks after a DCS update cover log inspection, isolation and clean reinstalls.

The DCS repair function checks the simulator installation, not third-party aircraft under Saved Games. It therefore cannot repair a damaged OH-6A package.

Can the OH-6A mod be used in multiplayer?

The OH-6A can be flown online when the server permits the mod, the mission contains suitable client slots and participating pilots use the required release.

Server administrators may restrict unofficial modules or enforce their own package version. Being rejected by one server does not prove that the local installation is wrong; test the helicopter in a simple single-player mission first.
