Is there a YF-23 mod for DCS World, and how do I install it?

Yes. Unofficial, community-made YF-23 Black Widow II aircraft mods are available for DCS World, but there is no official Eagle Dynamics YF-23 module. Install the package under your DCS Saved Games branch, not the simulator’s program folder, and check its documentation for required donor modules and supported DCS versions.

What does the DCS YF-23 mod include?

A YF-23 mod is a community aircraft rather than a supported, full-fidelity DCS module. Different releases may use different external models, flight models, cockpits and avionics, so instructions for one YF-23 package should not be assumed to apply to another.

The real YF-23 never entered production, and detailed public systems information is limited. Expect approximated or borrowed cockpit systems rather than an authentic simulation of an operational aircraft. Some packages are flyable; others may provide only an AI aircraft.

How do I install the YF-23 mod in DCS World?

Install a conventional YF-23 aircraft mod inside the DCS profile under Saved Games. Steam users follow the same method—the mod does not normally belong in the Steam installation directory.

  1. Check the package documentation. Before extracting anything, read its included instructions and identify any required F-15C, Flaming Cliffs or other donor module. Use the original author’s release rather than an unidentified repack.
  2. Close DCS World. Installing or replacing an aircraft while the simulator is running can leave DCS using an older cached definition until it is restarted.
  3. Find the active Saved Games branch. For most installations the destination is C:\Users\your-name\Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\. An older or separately named profile may use Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Mods\aircraft\. Choose the branch in which DCS is actively creating its Config and Logs folders.
  4. Create the folders if necessary. It is safe to create Mods\aircraft under the active DCS Saved Games folder.
  5. Extract the aircraft folder. The usual finished layout is Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\YF-23-folder\entry.lua. The package name may differ, but entry.lua should normally be directly inside the mod’s main folder rather than buried under another identically named folder.
  6. Install any stated dependency. A donor aircraft licence must be installed and authorised through DCS. Moving files or editing Lua definitions does not replace that licence.
  7. Test it in the Mission Editor. Add the YF-23 under a country supported by the package and set its skill to Player or Client. A community mod may not include Instant Action missions or appear in the Module Manager like a paid module.

Does the YF-23 mod require Flaming Cliffs?

The requirement depends on the exact YF-23 build. Some community aircraft reuse an F-15C cockpit or avionics and therefore require the corresponding F-15C or Flaming Cliffs licence; a genuinely standalone package may not.

Trust the documentation supplied with that release. Do not purchase a donor module merely because another YF-23 build required it. Missing dependencies commonly produce an unavailable cockpit, an aircraft that cannot be selected, or an authorisation warning during startup.

Why is the YF-23 not showing in DCS?

A missing YF-23 is most often caused by the wrong Saved Games branch or an extra folder level.

  • Wrong profile: the mod was placed under DCS while the simulator is loading another Saved Games branch.
  • Double nesting: the path ends with something such as YF-23\YF-23\entry.lua. Move the inner package folder up one level.
  • Incorrect archive layout: a complete Mods folder was placed inside Mods\aircraft instead of being merged into the DCS profile.
  • Missing donor module: the aircraft depends on cockpit or avionics files from a licensed module that is absent or disabled.
  • Mission Editor filtering: the selected country, mission date or historical-unit filter may hide the aircraft. Also confirm that the package is flyable rather than AI-only.
  • Conflicting copies: an older YF-23 folder remains beside the replacement and both attempt to register the same aircraft.
  • DCS update incompatibility: the package’s scripts or binaries no longer load under the installed DCS version.

Open Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.log after a failed launch and search for the package name, entry.lua and nearby error lines. That usually distinguishes a bad path from a missing dependency or incompatible script.

Can the YF-23 mod be used in multiplayer?

Multiplayer support depends on the server’s rules and everyone using a compatible build. The host or server and clients that must load the custom aircraft should have matching versions, while some integrity-restricted servers do not permit community aircraft at all.

After a DCS update, test the YF-23 in a simple single-player mission first. When replacing the mod, remove its old folder before installing the new release instead of merging files from both versions.

How do I remove or repair a broken YF-23 installation?

Delete only the YF-23 package folder from Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft; do not remove the entire aircraft directory. If an older installer replaced files inside the main DCS directory, remove those additions and follow our DCS repair and Steam verification procedure to restore the simulator’s original files.
