Use photoreal scenery when accurate roads, coastlines and field patterns matter, especially for VFR flying over a familiar region. Keep default scenery when you want consistent autogen, seasons, night lighting, smaller storage demands and fewer tile seams. For most simmers, the best setup is default worldwide scenery plus selected photoreal areas.
What does photoreal scenery actually replace?
Photoreal scenery replaces or covers the simulator’s ground textures with georeferenced aerial or satellite images. It makes real roads, farmland, rivers and urban footprints visible in their correct positions, but the imagery alone does not create three-dimensional buildings, trees or terrain elevation.
Default scenery varies considerably between simulators. Older platforms often use repeated landclass textures, while Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 can stream aerial imagery and generate buildings over it. When is photoreal scenery the better choice?
Photoreal scenery is most useful for daytime VFR flying where recognising actual ground features matters.
- Flying over familiar places: real roads, villages, fields and coastlines make navigation by sight much easier.
- Recreating real routes: photographic coverage helps when following landmarks, valleys or reporting points used by real pilots.
- Flying from medium altitude: imagery often looks most convincing high enough for individual pixels and flat objects to be less obvious.
- Improving an older simulator: regional photographic scenery can produce a much larger visual change in FSX or Prepar3D than another set of generic ground textures.
Choose packages with consistent colour, adequate source resolution and coverage beyond the exact route. A high-resolution tile surrounded by mismatched default terrain can be more distracting than a uniform world.
When should you keep default scenery?
Default scenery is usually better for worldwide flying, changing seasons, night operations and low-level flying among three-dimensional objects.

A common mistake is judging scenery from a high-altitude screenshot alone. Test it at the altitude, season and time of day you actually fly. Photographic ground textures that look convincing at 5,000 feet may appear blurred and flat during a helicopter flight at rooftop height.
How does the choice change between simulators?
The value of a photoreal add-on depends on what the simulator already provides.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024
With online data enabled, both simulators already use streamed aerial imagery, generated buildings and photogrammetry in supported areas. A local photographic package makes sense when it corrects poor default imagery, supplies sharper regional coverage or provides an offline alternative. It can also introduce colour boundaries or overlap with other scenery, so it is not an automatic upgrade.
Console editions cannot use ordinary PC folder-based mods, so scenery availability and installation options differ from the PC versions.
FSX and Prepar3D
Photoreal scenery can be a major improvement over default landclass textures, particularly for regional VFR flying. Check whether the package includes compatible autogen, night textures and seasonal variants; without them, cities may look empty and a summer photograph may remain visible in winter.
X-Plane
Orthophoto scenery is widely used as a regional base layer, with separate overlays providing roads, buildings and vegetation. Scenery order matters: airports and overlays normally need to sit above the orthophoto layer. Can photoreal and default scenery be used together?
Yes. A hybrid installation is usually the most practical arrangement: retain default scenery globally and activate photoreal coverage only for favourite regions.
- Choose a defined area. Start with one airport region or regular VFR route rather than installing an entire country immediately.
- Install one scenery layer at a time. Confirm that it loads correctly before adding airports, overlays or another imagery source.
- Check scenery priority. Keep detailed airports above broad regional packages and remove or disable duplicate coverage.
- Inspect the boundaries. Look for colour changes, missing water, displaced coastlines and visible tile edges.
- Test representative conditions. Fly in daylight, darkness and another season if the simulator supports seasonal changes.
Why can photoreal scenery look worse than expected?
Most disappointing results come from source imagery or missing companion layers rather than a graphics-setting fault.
- Flat towns or missing trees: install or enable the intended autogen or object overlay.
- Blurred ground: the source image may have insufficient resolution, or the simulator may still be loading higher-detail tiles.
- Baked-in clouds and shadows: these are part of the original aerial photograph and cannot be removed with graphics settings.
- Incorrect terrain height: add or correct the terrain mesh rather than replacing the ground image again.
- Black, blank or misplaced tiles: check package compatibility, installation completeness and scenery priority, then disable overlapping packages while diagnosing the problem.
- Harsh colour seams: use a colour-corrected package or reduce the coverage to a region where its imagery matches acceptably.
Does photoreal scenery reduce performance?
Photoreal scenery often affects storage, loading and texture memory more than raw frame rate. Dense autogen, airports and three-dimensional objects usually impose the larger frame-rate cost, while high-resolution imagery can cause pauses or blurry tiles when the drive, network connection or available memory cannot supply data quickly enough.
Locally stored imagery avoids dependence on streaming but requires considerable disk capacity and benefits from fast storage. Streamed default scenery saves local space but depends on network throughput and cache behaviour. For accurate daytime VFR routes, choose good photoreal coverage with matching objects or autogen. For global flying, seasonal weather, night operations and minimal maintenance, keep the default scenery. A selective hybrid setup gives most users the strongest balance.
