Experience an enhanced layout of Philadelphia International Airport (KPHL) in Pennsylvania (PA) for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This custom scenery, created by Ray Smith using [Airport Design Editor (ADE)], provides two runway operation configurations, expanded terminal features, and updated ground services. It is offered as freeware.

Refined Airport Configuration

As a major air transportation center near the bustling city of Philadelphia, KPHL is known for its multiple terminals and high-volume traffic. This add-on refines gate allocations by providing additional parking spots (including the extension at Terminal E), optimizing fuel truck placement, and enhancing support vehicle roads. Through these upgrades, ground operations run more efficiently for all types of virtual airline fleets visiting Philadelphia.

Multiple Runway Operations

This package includes two distinct files that customize runway usage based on pilot preference:

  • KPHL_ADE_CW_RS.BGL extends crosswind capabilities and enables all four runways to operate simultaneously.
  • KPHL_ADE_RS.BGL retains the default runway configuration while preserving all other airport improvements.

In both scenarios, the same gate assignments are maintained, ensuring consistent parking positions no matter which file you choose.

Taxiway and Signage Updates

Taxiways have been adjusted to reflect current airport layouts. In addition, signage has been revised for more accurate ground navigation. These modifications help virtual pilots transition smoothly from run-up areas to the active runway, especially during higher traffic loads.

Object and Scenery Placement

Alongside the runway files, this add-on incorporates an KPHL_ADE_OBJ.BGL file that positions key objects throughout the airport. This includes ramp lights, vehicles, and other details designed to simulate daily operations at a significant East Coast gateway.

Installation Instructions

  1. Pick exactly one runway operation file from:
    • KPHL_ADE_CW_RS.BGL for crosswind runways
    • KPHL_ADE_RS.BGL for default runway flow
Place the chosen file into your Flight Simulator X/Addon Scenery/scenery folder.
  2. Move KPHL_ADE_OBJ.BGL into the Flight Simulator X/Scenery/Global/scenery folder.
  3. Launch FSX and enjoy the new layout of KPHL.

Important Reminders

  • Only use one KPHL runway operation file at a time in the Addon Scenery/scenery folder.
  • Remove or relocate previously installed versions of KPHL AFCAD files to avoid conflicts or incorrect parking assignments.
  • Ensure no other traffic add-ons have installed a separate AFCAD for KPHL.
  • If you choose the crosswind runway setup, ATIS may announce certain “fake” runway identifiers; this is necessary to activate non-parallel runways and can be disregarded if you prefer the default version.

Uninstalling/Discarding the Updates

To revert to the stock airport, simply remove the BGL files from the respective scenery folders. The default KPHL layout will then replace the updated configuration.

All additions and modifications are courtesy of Ray Smith. Explore the upgraded Philadelphia International Airport, and enjoy seamless runway operations in your virtual flights.
