Fix rudder pedals not working in MSFS 2024 by checking device detection, axis bindings, profile conflicts, brake reversal and taxi steering.
Rudder pedals usually fail in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 because the wrong device preset is active, the pedals are bound as buttons instead of axes, another controller is overriding them, or a toe-brake axis is reversed. First confirm the hardware registers, then rebuild only the three pedal-axis bindings.
How should rudder pedals be configured in MSFS 2024?
Bind the pedal movement to Rudder Axis, then bind each toe brake to its own analogue brake axis. Do not use the digital rudder-left and rudder-right commands for an analogue pedal set.
- Open the Controls screen and select the pedals from the device list. If the pedals plug into a yoke or controller base, they may appear under that device rather than under their own name.
- Select or create an editable preset for that device. Confirm that the preset remains active after leaving the controls screen.
- Search for Rudder Axis and assign it by moving the pedals through their full travel. Remove any pedal assignments from digital commands such as rudder left and rudder right.
- Bind the toe brakes separately to Left Brake Axis and Right Brake Axis. Press only the relevant toe brake while creating each assignment.
- Check the response indicators. The rudder should rest near the centre and move smoothly both ways. Each brake should be released when untouched and increase progressively when pressed.
- Adjust sensitivity last. Add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement around the centre; a large dead zone makes taxi corrections abrupt.
A mistake we see constantly is editing one preset while the simulator continues using another. MSFS 2024 stores assignments by device preset, so verify the selected preset before testing in the cockpit. Our broader guide to MSFS 2024 device profiles and conflicting control assignments covers that profile behaviour in more detail.

What if MSFS 2024 does not detect the pedals?
If the pedal device is absent from the controls list, fix the hardware connection before changing simulator bindings. A control cannot be assigned until the operating system or console recognises the device.
- Disconnect and reconnect the pedals before launching the simulator.
- On PC, try a direct USB port rather than an unpowered hub and confirm that the axes respond in Windows' game-controller test panel.
- If the pedals connect through a yoke, wheel or controller base, test that complete device and inspect its device tile inside MSFS 2024.
- Close software that creates a duplicate virtual controller, as the simulator may be reading the virtual device instead of the physical pedals.
- Install or repair the hardware manufacturer's driver or configuration software where the model requires it.
- On Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5, confirm that the pedal set and its connection method are supported on that console. PC-compatible USB pedals are not automatically console-compatible.
If Windows also shows no movement, the problem is outside MSFS 2024: change the USB port, inspect detachable cables and test the pedals without an extension or hub. If Windows responds correctly but MSFS does not list the device, restart the simulator with the pedals already connected.
Why do the pedals move in the menu but not in the aircraft?
Movement in the controls screen proves the hardware works; no response in the aircraft usually means a conflicting assignment, an assistance feature or an aircraft-system limitation.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Rudder snaps fully left or right | Pedals are assigned to digital rudder commands | Use Rudder Axis and clear the digital assignments |
| Rudder moves, then returns or fights the pedals | Another controller or assistance feature is overriding it | Clear duplicate rudder axes and disable rudder-related assistance or AI control |
| Only part of the pedal travel works | Calibration or sensitivity curve is incorrect | Recalibrate the device and restore a simple linear response for testing |
| Airliner controls do not respond at the gate | Required aircraft systems or hydraulics are unavailable | Power and configure the aircraft, then check the cockpit control surface indication |
| One aircraft fails but others work | Aircraft-specific steering or systems behaviour | Test a default light aircraft to separate a binding fault from an aircraft issue |
Search every connected controller for Rudder Axis, including a joystick twist grip, gamepad and racing wheel. Keep the assignment only on the device you intend to use. A stuck digital rudder or brake input can also override an otherwise correct pedal axis.
Why are the toe brakes stuck on or reversed?
Toe brakes need their own axes, and many pedal sets report those axes in the opposite direction expected by the simulator. Reverse each brake axis only when the on-screen response shows braking while the pedals are untouched.
Test the left and right brakes separately. If both move together, they were probably assigned from the same physical axis; delete both bindings and recreate them one at a time. If the cockpit brakes release correctly but the aircraft still will not roll, also check the parking brake and any brake assistance setting.
Why do the pedals work in flight but not while taxiing?
Working rudder in the air does not guarantee full nose-wheel steering on the ground. Some aircraft connect pedal input to the nose wheel only within a limited steering range, while tighter turns require a separate tiller or differential braking.
Test with a simple default aircraft before changing the pedal profile. If the rudder animates correctly but the nose wheel does not follow, use our nose-wheel steering and tiller troubleshooting rather than repeatedly recalibrating the pedals.
Resetting controls should be the last step, not the first, because it removes working assignments along with the bad ones. When a preset appears corrupted or retains conflicts you cannot locate, follow the safe method for clearing or resetting individual MSFS control presets, then bind only Rudder Axis and the two brake axes before adding anything else.
