How do I line up on the centreline for take-off and landing?

In aviation and real-world flying, line up with the runway centreline by looking well ahead, placing the aircraft’s longitudinal axis over the painted line, and steering with rudder or nosewheel control on the ground. On final, intercept the extended centreline, correct lateral drift with bank, and align the nose by touchdown.

Three conditions matter: the aircraft must be positioned over the centreline, its ground track must follow the line, and its longitudinal axis must be appropriately aligned. You can satisfy one without the others—for example, an aircraft may be over the line but pointing across it.

How do you line up for take-off?

For take-off, place the aircraft’s centre over the runway centreline and establish a distant visual reference before accelerating.

  1. Verify the runway. Cross-check the runway designation, signs, markings and heading indication before entering. Enter only when cleared or when permitted by the applicable uncontrolled-aerodrome procedure.
  2. Complete the turn. Taxi far enough onto the runway to make a smooth turn and straighten the aircraft without cutting across the centreline.
  3. Look towards the far end. Use the centreline ahead and a distant reference beyond the nose. Looking at a stripe immediately in front of the aircraft encourages zig-zagging.
  4. Set the aircraft axis. The centreline belongs beneath the aircraft, not beneath the pilot’s seat. Confirm that the nose points along the runway rather than merely towards the next visible stripe.
  5. Apply power smoothly. Keep straight with small rudder inputs and the aircraft’s approved nosewheel-steering system. Differential braking is primarily a low-speed aid; avoid riding the brakes as speed builds.
  6. Hold crosswind control. Use aileron into wind as required while rudder maintains direction. After lift-off, correct for wind so the ground track continues along the extended centreline.

Nosewheel authority and control arrangements vary substantially between aircraft. How do you line up with the centreline for landing?

For landing, intercept the extended centreline early enough to establish a stable ground track before the flare.

Make a shallow, coordinated turn onto final, then roll out so the runway edges appear balanced and the extended centreline runs towards the aircraft. The aiming point controls the vertical path; centreline alignment controls the lateral path. Simmers who struggle to establish both can practise building a stable visual final using the runway picture.

In a crosswind, the nose may point away from the runway heading while the aircraft still tracks correctly along the centreline. Most techniques remove that crab before or during touchdown while preventing drift with bank. Where should you look to stay on the centreline?

Look well ahead rather than staring over the nose at the nearest centreline stripe.

During the take-off roll and landing rollout, a distant reference makes yaw visible early and reduces overcorrection. On final, scan between the aiming point, centreline and runway edges. As the flare begins, shift more attention towards the far end while retaining peripheral awareness of the edges and centreline.

Why does the centreline look offset from the pilot’s seat?

The centreline looks offset because the pilot usually sits to one side of the aircraft’s longitudinal axis.

From the left seat, the line will normally appear to pass to the right of the pilot’s body when the aircraft itself is centred. Trying to place it directly beneath your eyes puts the whole aircraft left of centre. Learn the model-specific cowling or instrument-panel reference with a qualified instructor.

In a simulator, set a realistic eye position and keep it consistent. Moving the camera until the centreline sits in the middle of the screen creates a false sight picture, particularly in side-by-side and large flight decks.

What centreline-control mistakes cause the most trouble?

  • Looking too close: this produces increasingly large left-right corrections. Raise your eyes and use the far end of the runway.
  • Steering with aileron on the ground: aileron manages wing lift and crosswind effects; rudder, nosewheel steering or the approved tiller controls direction.
  • Using rudder alone to recapture final: this yaws the nose and can create an uncoordinated skid. Use a coordinated bank to change the flight path.
  • Pointing at the line: aiming the nose towards the centreline without stopping the lateral motion causes an overshoot. Reduce or reverse the correction as the desired track is reached.
  • Relaxing after touchdown: crosswind and directional control continue until the aircraft has slowed and left the runway.

When should you go around instead of correcting?

Go around when acceptable centreline tracking, drift control and aircraft alignment cannot be achieved within the applicable stabilised-approach criteria.

Do not use a large, late bank or abrupt rudder input to rescue the landing during the flare. A narrow, wet or contaminated runway and a strong crosswind leave less margin. During take-off, loss of directional control requires the aircraft-specific rejected-take-off procedure rather than an improvised high-speed steering correction.
