To set up rudder pedals in Prepar3D, first confirm Windows detects all pedal axes, then assign the centre rudder movement to Rudder Axis and each toe brake to its matching brake axis. Remove duplicate bindings, reverse any backwards brake axes, set a small null zone, and test in a simple aircraft.
Check the pedals in Windows first
Prepar3D can only configure pedal inputs that Windows recognises correctly. Connect the pedals directly where possible, install any required manufacturer driver, then open the Windows game-controller panel by pressing Win+R and entering joy.cpl.

If the axes jump, stop before changing Prepar3D settings. Reconnect the USB cable, avoid an unpowered hub, and run the Windows or manufacturer calibration tool if one is available.
How to assign rudder pedals in Prepar3D
The correct setup uses one analogue rudder axis and, if fitted, two separate analogue toe-brake axes. Menu nesting differs slightly between Prepar3D releases, but the assignments are found in the simulator's Controls settings.
- Connect the pedals before launching Prepar3D. This helps the simulator enumerate the controller correctly and retain its assignments.
- Open the Controls settings. Make sure controllers are enabled, then select the pedal unit from the controller or device list. Some pedal adaptors expose more than one device, so check each listed controller.
- Remove automatic or duplicate assignments. Prepar3D may assign rudder or brakes to a joystick twist grip, throttle paddles and the pedals simultaneously. Inspect every connected controller and clear unwanted copies of

Rudder Axis, start the assignment process and move both pedals through their left-right travel without pressing either toe brake. Do not use the digital Rudder Left and Rudder Right commands for an analogue pedal axis. - Assign the left toe brake. Select
Left Brake Axisand press only the left toe brake through its full travel. - Assign the right toe brake. Repeat the process with
Right Brake Axisand the right pedal. Clear and retry if Prepar3D captures the rudder or opposite brake axis. - Set the response. Begin with high sensitivity and the smallest null zone that prevents centre jitter. Rudder travel should reach both extremes without requiring excessive force. - Test in a basic aircraft. Release the parking brake, move the pedals slowly and confirm that the cockpit rudder pedals and external rudder follow the correct direction. Taxi at low power to check steering and differential braking.
Why are my toe brakes reversed or always on?
Toe brakes that remain applied at rest usually have an inverted axis, not a sensitivity problem. Use Prepar3D's axis reversal option separately for the left and right brake axes, then verify that brake pressure increases as each pedal is pressed and releases completely when your feet come off.
Do not reverse the rudder axis unless left pedal movement produces right rudder. Rudder direction and toe-brake direction are separate settings.
If one brake drags, reaches only part travel or activates with rudder movement, check its raw input and follow the steps for calibrating toe-brake pedals in Windows. A small brake null zone can suppress minor resting input, but it should not be used to conceal a badly calibrated or incorrectly assigned axis.
Why does the rudder twitch or move by itself?
Uncommanded rudder movement normally comes from centre noise, duplicate assignments or an enabled automatic-rudder aid. Increase the null zone only enough to stop the jitter, remove rudder assignments from unused twist grips and paddles, and disable auto-rudder if you want the physical pedals to provide direct control.

Can I use pedals without toe brakes?
Pedals without toe brakes still provide full rudder control; assign only Rudder Axis. Leave both brake axes unassigned and map the normal brake command to a keyboard key, joystick button or other controller.
This provides combined braking rather than independent left-right braking. Differential braking is useful for tight ground turns, especially in aircraft with limited nosewheel steering, but it is not required for the rudder itself to work.
What should a correct pedal setup do?
A finished Prepar3D pedal setup should produce proportional rudder movement, independent toe braking and no control input while the pedals are centred and released.
- Pressing the left pedal gives left rudder; pressing the right gives right rudder.
- Both rudder extremes can be reached without the axis clipping too early.
- Each toe brake affects only its matching wheel brake.
- The brakes release fully when neither toe brake is pressed.
- The joystick, throttle and other controllers do not send competing rudder or brake inputs.
- The same assignments remain available after Prepar3D is restarted with the pedals connected.
