Learn why FSX spoilers deploy with reverse thrust, fail to extend or snap back, and fix arming, key assignments, axes and add-on logic.
FSX does not normally use reverse thrust as a spoiler command. If the spoilers rise when you select reverse, they were usually armed and deployed automatically at touchdown, or the same key, button or axis is assigned to both functions. Spoilers that twitch, retract or ignore the keyboard usually indicate an axis conflict.
Is spoiler deployment with reverse thrust normal?
It can be normal on landing, but reverse thrust itself is not the standard FSX spoiler control. When armed, an aircraft's automatic ground spoilers may extend after touchdown as the throttles reach idle. Because reverse is selected immediately afterwards, the two actions can appear linked.
The stock keyboard commands are separate: / toggles the spoilers, Shift+/ arms them, F1 moves the throttles to idle, and continued F2 input selects reverse on a suitably equipped aircraft. Our FSX spoiler and throttle command reference lists the relevant default bindings.
Some add-on aircraft replace this simplified FSX logic with custom gauges or systems. They may require hydraulic power, specific touchdown conditions or their own spoiler lever position; a few use reverse selection as part of their ground-spoiler trigger.
What does the spoiler behaviour indicate?
The timing of the movement usually identifies the cause.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Spoilers extend at touchdown just before reverse | Normal armed auto-spoiler operation | Verify that the lever was in ARM and the throttles were at idle |
Spoilers extend while parked whenever F2 is pressed | Duplicate assignment or add-on logic | Check keyboard, controller and external controller-software bindings |
| Spoilers extend briefly, then retract | A spoiler axis is overriding the keyboard command | Remove or calibrate the unwanted axis |
| The lever shows ARM but the panels remain flush | Usually normal before touchdown | Use / when full manual deployment is required |
| The cockpit lever moves but the wing panels do not | Aircraft animation, hydraulic or custom-system issue | Compare the same controls in a default FSX aircraft |
How do I fix incorrect spoiler deployment in FSX?
- Test the basic command. Load a default jet, remain stationary and press
/. The spoiler lever and wing panels should extend and retract. Remember thatShift+/arms the system rather than raising the panels immediately. - Disable controller input temporarily. Retest with the keyboard alone. If the problem disappears, a joystick, throttle quadrant or other connected device is sending the unwanted command.
- Inspect every device's assignments. Open the FSX Controls settings and check each controller separately. Remove any button assigned to both a spoiler function and throttle decrease. Controller profiling software can also send keystrokes even when the FSX assignment screen appears correct.
- Remove duplicate axes. A spoiler axis reports its position continuously and can override a one-time keyboard command. Assign the spoiler axis only to a lever intended for that purpose, and check unused controllers because FSX may have assigned them automatically.
- Calibrate a genuine spoiler lever. If the spoilers flicker or will not remain fully retracted, recalibrate the device and add a small null zone if necessary. Delete the assignment instead if that physical axis is not meant to operate spoilers.
- Compare default and add-on aircraft. If the default aircraft behaves correctly, leave the global controls alone and inspect the add-on's own configuration. Confirm that its hydraulic and electrical systems are powered and that its spoiler lever is in the required detent.
How should spoilers and reverse thrust be used on landing?
Spoilers should be armed before touchdown when the aircraft supports automatic deployment; reverse thrust is selected only after touchdown with the throttles at idle.
- Arm the spoilers on approach using the cockpit lever or
Shift+/. - Move the throttles to idle during the flare using the hardware throttle or
F1. - Confirm deployment after touchdown. If the aircraft has no working automatic system, use
/to extend the spoilers manually. - Select reverse thrust only after idle. The standard keyboard method is to hold
F2; our FSX reverse-thrust procedure and troubleshooting steps cover hardware inputs and commands that prevent it engaging. - Stow the spoilers and cancel reverse before leaving the runway.
If a stationary default aircraft deploys its spoilers solely when F2 is pressed, that is not normal auto-spoiler behaviour. Concentrate on duplicate bindings, controller axes and software-generated keystrokes rather than changing the aircraft model.
