Learn how to take off in X-Plane Mobile: runway setup, throttle, rudder, rotation speed, climb, gear and flaps, plus common-problem fixes.
To take off in X-Plane Mobile, line up on the runway, release the parking brake, set the aircraft’s recommended take-off flap and trim, then apply power smoothly. Keep straight with rudder, rotate gently at the correct airspeed, establish a positive climb, and retract the gear and flaps on schedule.
X-Plane Mobile take-off procedure
A runway start in calm weather is the easiest way to learn the X-Plane Mobile take-off sequence. We recommend beginning with a light trainer before attempting a fast jet or airliner; our beginner set-up guide for X-Plane Mobile covers aircraft, airport and weather selection.
- Choose a suitable runway. Use a long runway, daylight and little or no wind while learning. Make sure the aircraft is facing down the runway rather than starting from a ramp or taxiway.
- Centre the flight controls. Hold your phone or tablet in its normal playing position and check that pitch and roll respond in the correct direction. Calibrate or adjust the control mode if the aircraft shows unwanted input; the exact layout depends on your selected settings. - Configure the aircraft. Set trim in the marked take-off range and use the flap setting specified for that aircraft and runway. A normal light-aircraft take-off often uses no flap, while airliners require a calculated configuration. Confirm that the engine is running and the parking brake is holding or that you are ready to release it.
- Line up and apply power. Place the nose on the runway centreline, release the parking brake and advance the throttle smoothly to the appropriate take-off setting. Check that the engine is producing power and that indicated airspeed begins increasing.
- Keep straight with rudder. Use small yaw inputs to hold the centreline. Do not try to correct every sideways movement with roll alone, because aileron mainly banks the aircraft rather than steering its nose along the runway.
- Rotate at the correct speed. At the aircraft’s rotation speed, apply gentle back pressure and raise the nose gradually. Avoid pulling fully aft or trying to force the aircraft into the air before it is ready.
- Establish the climb. Hold the recommended climb speed rather than chasing a fixed pitch angle. Once the aircraft has a positive rate of climb, retract landing gear if fitted and remove flaps according to the aircraft’s schedule.
What speed should I take off at?
There is no single take-off speed for every aircraft in X-Plane Mobile. Use indicated airspeed and the rotation speed supplied by the aircraft’s checklist, cockpit reference or performance calculation—not GPS ground speed.
For a standard Cessna 172, roughly 55 KIAS is a useful normal-rotation reference, although loading and conditions can change the result. An airliner’s V1, VR and V2 speeds depend on weight, flap setting, runway and weather, so copying a speed from another flight can produce an early rotation or runway overrun.
After lift-off, lower the nose slightly if the airspeed is decaying or the stall warning sounds. If speed is building well above the desired climb speed, raise the nose smoothly rather than making an abrupt correction.
Why won’t the aircraft take off?
Most failed X-Plane Mobile take-offs come from brakes, insufficient airspeed, incorrect trim or a control input that is not registering.
- The aircraft will not roll: release the parking brake, make sure no wheel-brake input is being held and confirm that the throttle actually moves in the cockpit.
- Acceleration is very slow: check that the engine is running normally, the throttle reaches take-off power and the aircraft is not excessively loaded. High elevation and hot weather also increase the runway required.
- The nose will not rise: verify that pitch control moves the elevator correctly, use the specified rotation speed and check the trim setting. Do not compensate by holding full back pressure from the start of the roll.
- The aircraft lifts off and immediately stalls: rotate later and more gently, reduce excessive nose-up trim and maintain the published climb speed.
- The aircraft leaves the side of the runway: use smaller rudder inputs and practise without crosswind before adding difficult weather.

When should I retract the gear and flaps?
Retract movable landing gear after confirming a positive climb, then retract flaps progressively at the speeds and heights specified for the aircraft. Fixed-gear trainers have no gear action to perform.
Do not remove all flap while barely above stall speed: the loss of lift can make the aircraft sink back towards the runway. At the other extreme, leaving flap extended while accelerating can exceed its operating limit. Stabilise the climb, accelerate as required, then clean up in stages.
Can I use autopilot immediately after take-off?
Autopilot can be engaged after take-off, but only once the aircraft is climbing safely, correctly trimmed and following a sensible heading or flight plan.
