How do I taxi safely when I cannot see over the nose?

When the nose blocks forward view, taxi at walking pace and make shallow, deliberate S-turns so each side ahead becomes visible in turn. Keep power low, avoid riding the brakes, watch wingtip and tail swing, and stop immediately whenever the route is uncertain. Use a marshaller or wing walker in confined areas.

Limited forward visibility is normal in some aircraft

In Aviation & Real-World Flying, restricted forward visibility is most often associated with tailwheel aircraft because their ground attitude points the nose upwards. It can also affect large radial-engine aircraft, some warbirds and any cockpit where the pilot sits low behind a long nose.

First set the seat and pedals to the approved flying position; do not raise yourself so far that you compromise control reach, restraint geometry or the correct sight picture. Study the taxi route before moving, position the flight controls for the wind as the aircraft handbook requires, and use only procedures approved for that aircraft.

How do you use S-turns safely?

Use S-turns as a sequence of shallow direction changes that exposes one side of the route and then the other, rather than as a continuous or aggressive weave.

  1. Clear the immediate area: Look through both side windows and confirm that the visible space around the wings, propeller and tail is clear before releasing the brakes.
  2. Move slowly: Use the minimum power needed to start rolling, check the brakes early, and keep your feet ready on the applicable steering and braking controls.
  3. Turn gently to one side: Change heading only enough to reveal the previously hidden section ahead through the windscreen or side window.
  4. Scan the whole aircraft: Check the newly visible path, taxiway edge, wingtip clearance and the area into which the tail is swinging.
  5. Reverse the turn: Return through the centreline and make a shallow turn the other way to inspect the opposite blind sector.
  6. Stop if the picture is incomplete: Never continue merely because the last visible section was clear. People, vehicles and aircraft can enter the blind area.

Remember that the tail moves opposite the nose and the outside wing sweeps a much wider arc than the wheels. Large rudder inputs, sharp differential braking or pivot turns can turn a visibility check into a collision risk.

When should you avoid S-turning?

Do not S-turn where weaving itself would reduce clearance or create an unpredictable path.

  • On a narrow taxiway where the wings cannot remain comfortably inside the edges.
  • Near parked aircraft, buildings, fuel equipment, vehicles or groups of people.
  • Where propeller wash or jet blast could affect objects behind the aircraft.
  • Approaching a hold-short marking, runway crossing or congested intersection.
  • Whenever local procedures require a marshaller, wing walkers or towing.

A taxi clearance does not guarantee obstacle clearance and does not transfer responsibility for safe movement to air traffic control. How fast should you taxi with limited visibility?

Taxi slowly enough to stop within the area that you have positively confirmed is clear.

Walking pace is a sensible target on aprons and in confined spaces, but there is no single safe number for every aircraft or surface. Allow extra margin on wet, icy, loose or sloping ground. Avoid holding substantial power against the brakes: that increases brake heating, prop wash or jet blast, and excessive braking in a tailwheel aircraft can contribute to a nose-over.

What should you do if the route is still hidden?

Stop and obtain ground assistance whenever S-turns cannot provide a reliable view of the intended path.

Use one designated marshaller or an agreed wing-walker arrangement, with signals or intercom procedures understood before moving. Keep the marshaller in sight; if that person disappears, gives an unclear signal or conflicts with another signal, stop immediately. In very tight areas, towing is safer than trying to manoeuvre under power.

A walk-around performed earlier does not prove that the blind area remains clear. Vehicles and people move, so never rely on memory, assumption or another aircraft having just used the same route.

Practising limited-visibility taxiing in a simulator

A flight simulator is useful for learning the rhythm of S-turns, but an external camera is not a real-world taxi technique. Set the cockpit viewpoint to a realistic seated position and practise making small steering inputs while monitoring the wing and tail geometry.
