Yes—TrackIR is worth using for most PC flight simmers who fly on a monitor. What does TrackIR add to a flight simulator?

TrackIR makes a flat monitor behave more like a movable cockpit window. Its optical camera follows three infrared points on a reflective cap clip or active headset-mounted clip, then maps modest head movements to larger movements of the in-game camera.

It supports six degrees of freedom: yaw, pitch, roll, left and right, up and down, and forward and back. That lets you look into a circuit turn, lean towards an instrument, see around a windscreen pillar, inspect an overhead panel or keep sight of another aircraft.

  • General aviation: looking through turns and checking runway position becomes much more natural.

Your eyes still face the monitor while your head turns slightly away from it. That feels odd for the first few sessions, but a well-shaped response curve makes it intuitive without requiring extreme physical movement.

Who gets the most value from TrackIR?

  • Choose it if you fly primarily on a single monitor, ultrawide display or conventional multi-monitor desktop.
  • Choose it if you use physical controls and need to see your keyboard, HOTAS, yoke or switch panels.

How do you stop TrackIR feeling twitchy or unnatural?

Most poor TrackIR experiences come from an unsuitable profile, false infrared reflections or losing sight of one tracking point—not from the basic technology.

  1. Centre the camera on the display. Mount it above or below the screen and angle it towards the clip in your normal seated position. Check that all three tracking points remain visible throughout the head movement you actually use.
  2. Remove false infrared sources. Bright sunlight, reflective objects and some lights can appear as extra points. Use the software's camera or tracking view and make sure it sees only the intended markers.
  3. Bind centre and pause controls. Put both on convenient yoke or HOTAS buttons. Centre while sitting in your normal flying posture; pause tracking when operating tiny cockpit controls or turning towards a side display.
  4. Use a progressive response curve. Keep a small central dead zone for steady instrument reading, then increase response towards the edges. Excessive sensitivity causes twitching, while excessive smoothing creates noticeable lag.
  5. Test the extreme views. If the view snaps, reverses or freezes when looking sideways, a marker is probably leaving the camera frame or overlapping another marker. Adjust the camera or clip, then increase virtual response rather than turning your head farther.
  6. Tune for the aircraft. Combat flying normally benefits from faster yaw response; airliners and instrument flying often feel better with slower movement around the centre.
