Can you play Train Simulator Classic offline?

In short

Learn how to play Train Simulator Classic offline through Steam, what to download first, which features stop working, and how to fix launch failures.

Yes. Train Simulator Classic can be played offline on PC once Steam has installed the simulator, completed pending updates and authenticated it online at least once. Download every route, locomotive, scenario and Workshop dependency you plan to use before disconnecting; online services, new downloads and cloud synchronisation will then be unavailable.

How do I set up Train Simulator Classic for offline play?

The reliable method is to prepare Steam and all required content while the PC is still connected to the internet.

  1. Complete the Steam installation. Install the simulator, allow pending updates to finish and run any prerequisite installers Steam requests. Our Steam installation walkthrough for Train Simulator Classic covers the initial setup.
  2. Download all required content. Install every route, locomotive, DLC pack and Workshop item you intend to use. Workshop scenarios often depend on separate rolling stock or route packages, so subscribing to the scenario alone may not be enough. Check our storage and PC requirements guidance if space is tight.
  3. Launch the simulator while online. Open Train Simulator Classic at least once, then load one of the routes or scenarios you plan to use. This confirms that Steam authentication, prerequisites and content installation have completed correctly.
  4. Let Steam retain your login. Remain signed in and allow the Steam client to remember the account on that computer. Offline Mode may fail if the account has been signed out or its credentials were not stored locally.
  5. Switch Steam to Offline Mode. Use the Steam client's Offline Mode command and allow it to restart when prompted. The exact wording can vary between client revisions.
  6. Test before losing internet access. Disconnect the network, restart Steam in Offline Mode and launch Train Simulator Classic from the local library. Testing first is especially sensible before travelling or moving the PC somewhere without a connection.

What works in Train Simulator Classic while offline?

Installed routes and most local driving modes remain usable, but anything that needs Steam or another online service will be unavailable or deferred.

FeatureOffline availability
Installed routes and locomotivesAvailable if all required files and dependencies are stored locally.
Quick Drive and standard scenariosNormally available. A scenario with missing assets may still fail even though Offline Mode itself is working.
Career scenariosUsually playable locally, but online score submission, comparisons or related services may not update.
Workshop scenariosAvailable only when the item and every required dependency finished downloading before you went offline. Browsing, subscribing and updating require a connection.
Editors and local savesLocal editing and saving generally work; online publishing and sharing do not.
Steam Cloud and achievementsThere is no live synchronisation. Some data may sync after reconnecting, but achievement recording while offline should not be relied upon.
New DLC, updates or add-onsUnavailable until Steam is back online.

If the route and scenario menus are unfamiliar, our walkthrough of the built-in routes, tutorials and scenarios explains how to reach the content already installed on your PC.

Why won't Train Simulator Classic launch offline?

Offline launch failures are usually caused by incomplete authentication, a pending update or content that was never fully installed.

  • Steam has not authenticated the installation: reconnect, sign in, start Steam and launch Train Simulator Classic once while online. Close both normally before trying Offline Mode again.
  • An update is queued: let the simulator and Steam client finish updating online. A partially applied update can prevent the executable from starting.
  • Steam did not retain the account: sign in online again and permit the client to remember the credentials. Password or account-security changes can also require fresh authentication.
  • The Steam library is unavailable: confirm that an external or secondary drive containing the simulator is connected and has the same drive assignment expected by Steam.
  • Only one scenario fails: this usually indicates a missing route, locomotive or asset dependency rather than an Offline Mode problem. Reconnect and allow the required content to download.
  • A separately protected add-on fails: some third-party products use their own activation systems. Their offline rules can differ from those of Train Simulator Classic and Steam.

If the core simulator still fails after a successful online launch, reconnect and use Steam's installed-files verification tool. Any missing or damaged files must be downloaded before offline play will work reliably.

Do you need internet every time you start it?

No. Train Simulator Classic does not require an always-on connection for ordinary local play once Steam and the installed content have been prepared for Offline Mode.

You will need to reconnect for simulator updates, new purchases, DLC installation, Workshop subscriptions and cloud synchronisation. A Windows reinstall, move to another PC, Steam client problem or account credential change may also force Steam to authenticate online again.
