Is Train Simulator Classic free to play?
No. Train Simulator Classic is a paid PC simulator, not a free-to-play game. A new player must buy a base package, which includes the core software and selected routes and trains. Extra DLC is optional, while free community add-ons usually require the base simulator and sometimes additional paid assets.
What does the Train Simulator Classic purchase include?
A Train Simulator Classic base package provides the simulator itself plus a selection of routes, locomotives and scenarios. The included content varies between packages, so check the contents rather than assuming every edition contains the same routes.

Why are some Train Simulator downloads free?
Free train-simulator files are usually add-ons, patches or updates rather than a complete licensed copy of Train Simulator Classic. A mistake we see constantly is downloading a file marked “free” and expecting it to contain the simulator.
For example, our patch for the older Microsoft Train Simulator updates a separate game; it is neither a complete game nor a Train Simulator Classic installer. Likewise, freeware routes and rolling stock must be installed into a compatible simulator.

Do existing owners have to buy Train Simulator Classic again?
Existing owners generally do not need to repurchase the same Train Simulator Classic product simply because its name or core software has been updated. If an older edition in the same product line appears as Train Simulator Classic in your library, your existing licence normally provides the installation.
That does not grant the extra routes included in every later retail bundle. It also does not apply to Microsoft Train Simulator, Train Sim World or other separate products. Check the account that originally held the licence before buying another copy.
Does Train Simulator Classic require a subscription?
Train Simulator Classic does not require a recurring subscription, and optional DLC is not needed to run the content included with your base package. An account and platform client are normally required for installation, activation and updates, but that is different from paying a monthly fee.
Temporary promotional access, when offered, should not be confused with a permanent free-to-play edition. Access can end with the promotion unless a full licence has been added to the account.
