Learn how to unzip FSX add-ons safely, handle ZIP, RAR and 7z files, identify the correct folder, and avoid broken FSX installations.
To unzip downloaded FSX add-ons, save and scan the archive, right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All, then extract it to a temporary folder outside FSX or FSX: Steam Edition. Open that folder, read the instructions, and only then copy or run the correct installer while preserving the supplied folder structure.
How do I extract an FSX add-on in Windows?
Windows can extract ordinary ZIP files without additional software. We recommend unpacking every download into its own temporary folder rather than opening the archive and dragging individual files straight into FSX.
- Check the file type. In File Explorer, enable file-name extensions if necessary and confirm whether the download ends in
.zip,.rar,.7zor.exe. - Scan the download. Use your installed security software before opening an archive or running an executable. Do not disable security protection merely because an unfamiliar installer requests it.
- Create a temporary folder. A short path such as
C:\FSX-Temphelps avoid permission and excessively long path errors. Do not use the live FSX installation folder as the extraction destination. - Extract the whole archive. Right-click a ZIP, select Extract All, choose your temporary folder and complete the extraction. Keeping every included subfolder intact is essential.
- Read the supplied documentation. Look for a readme or installation text file before moving anything. Its instructions determine whether the package must be copied manually or installed with an included program.
- Install from the extracted copy. Copy the identified add-on folder or run the installer from the extracted directory. Keep supporting installer files beside the executable until installation finishes.

What should I do with ZIP, RAR, 7z and EXE downloads?
The required method depends on the actual file format, not the add-on type.

A multipart archive needs every numbered part in the same folder. Start extraction from the first part; opening a later segment normally produces a missing-volume or incomplete-archive error.
Which extracted folder should I copy into FSX?
The correct folder is the one containing the add-on's defining files, not necessarily the first folder shown after extraction. Many downloads include an extra wrapper folder containing screenshots, documentation and the actual installable folder.
- Aircraft: the aircraft root normally contains

Sceneryand sometimesTexturesubfolders. Extraction alone does not activate it; follow the FSX scenery installation and activation procedure. - Packages mirroring the FSX root: some archives contain top-level folders such as
Effects,Gauges,MissionsorSimObjects. Merge these only when the supplied instructions explicitly say to do so, and back up files before approving replacements.
Why does the add-on not work after unzipping it?
Most post-extraction failures come from incorrect folder nesting or from assuming extraction also installs the add-on. For example, an aircraft placed one folder too deep will not appear because FSX cannot find aircraft.cfg at the expected level.
- If extraction reports a corrupt archive or unexpected end of data, delete the incomplete download and obtain a fresh copy.
- If no extraction command appears, verify the extension and use a utility compatible with that archive format.
- If Windows refuses to write files, extract to a normal local temporary folder rather than
Program Files, a network location or the FSX directory. - If the archive produces another ZIP, extract that inner archive as well; some packages bundle separate base aircraft, textures or optional files.
- If an installer cannot find FSX: Steam Edition, use its browse option to select the actual FSX folder rather than accepting an incorrect default path.
Can I install an FSX add-on without unzipping it?
Usually not. Manual FSX installations require access to the real files and folders inside the archive, while an add-on manager may accept ZIP or RAR packages only if it explicitly supports direct archive installation. An included .exe is the other exception, but it should still be run from the fully extracted folder so that accompanying data files remain available.
