Learn how to update DCS World on standalone or Steam, verify the version, protect your mods and fix stuck downloads or update loops.
To update DCS World, close the simulator, then use the DCS updater for the standalone edition or Steam’s normal update system for the Steam edition. Do not mix the two methods. Let the download, unpacking and cleanup stages finish, then launch DCS and confirm its version on the main menu.
Use the updater that matches your DCS edition

A mistake we see constantly is updating one copy and launching another. This happens when both editions, or an older DCS installation, remain on the same PC.
How do I update standalone DCS World?
The standalone edition normally checks for updates when started through its regular DCS shortcut or launcher.
- Close DCS World: exit the simulator, Mission Editor and any dedicated server instance using the same files.
- Start DCS normally: use the launcher or standard shortcut rather than opening
DCS.exedirectly. Accept the offered update. - Let every stage finish: downloading may be followed by a long unpacking or file-cleanup stage. Disk activity can continue even when network activity has stopped.
- Restart DCS: read any module warnings, then check the version displayed on the main menu.
If the automatic check does not appear, use the Windows shortcut labelled for updating DCS World. You can also run bin\DCS_updater.exe update from the DCS installation directory. Use the plain update command unless you have a specific reason to select a particular build; commands copied from old branch-switching guides can leave the installation on an unintended version.

How do I update DCS World on Steam?
Steam Edition updates must be downloaded and applied through the Steam client.
- Exit DCS World: make sure the simulator is no longer shown as running.
- Open Steam Downloads: allow the queued DCS World update to start, or move it ahead in the queue.
- Wait for installation to finish: Steam may show separate downloading, patching and verification activity.
- Launch from Steam: check the version shown by DCS before joining a multiplayer server.
Steam’s automatic-update policy can delay a download until its scheduled time. If no update appears, restart Steam and inspect the download queue. Do not copy a standalone DCS_updater.exe into the Steam folder.
Why is the DCS update stuck or not appearing?
Most failed DCS updates are caused by the wrong installation being launched, insufficient working space, a locked file or damaged installation data.
- Wrong copy: inspect the shortcut’s target and compare the installation path with the copy you updated.
- Not enough free space: an update needs room for both its download and temporary unpacked files, so the required working space can exceed the displayed download size.
- Files are locked: close DCS, its launcher, mission tools and updater processes. Restart Windows if the updater still reports that files are in use.
- Security software blocks changes: check whether Windows security or another trusted security tool has quarantined the updater or denied access to the DCS folder. Restore or permit only files you recognise as belonging to your installation.
- Standalone update loop: run
bin\DCS_updater.exe repair, then try the update again. A repair compares managed files and may redownload altered or missing data. - Steam remains queued or fails: restart Steam, confirm the correct library drive is available, then use its Installed Files option to verify the game files.
- Multiplayer version mismatch: confirm that the server and client use compatible builds. If DCS says it is up to date, the server may be on a different build, or you may have launched another local installation.
Do not interrupt an update merely because downloading has stopped: patching large terrain or module archives can be limited by storage speed. Investigate only when there is no meaningful disk activity and the updater has produced an error or remained unchanged for an unusually long period.
Will a DCS update remove modules, settings or mods?
A normal update preserves licences, missions, control bindings and settings, but it can replace unofficial files installed inside the main DCS directory.
User data is usually stored beneath %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS\; older installations may use a folder such as DCS.openbeta. Back up important control profiles under Config\Input before a major change or repair. Installed aircraft, terrains and other official modules are updated with DCS, although a newly acquired module may still need to be installed through Module Manager.
Core-folder mods are the main risk because an update or repair may overwrite, remove or set aside their altered files.
