Update your graphics driver through NVIDIA, AMD, Intel or your PC maker, choosing the package for your exact GPU and operating system. Close the simulator, install it over the existing driver, restart Windows, then repeat the same test flight. Reserve a clean installation for failed updates, corruption or persistent GPU crashes.
This is the general PC procedure for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, X-Plane, Prepar3D, FSX and FlightGear. The driver controls how the simulator uses DirectX, Vulkan or OpenGL. A suitable release can fix rendering errors and crashes, but it does not guarantee higher frame rates.
Which graphics driver should I install?
Install the newest stable or recommended driver that explicitly supports your GPU, operating system and computer type. Do not assume the newest package on offer supports an older graphics card; use the final compatible release if the GPU has moved into legacy support.
For a desktop with a dedicated graphics card, the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel package is normally appropriate. Optional, beta and hotfix drivers are better reserved for cases where their release notes address your simulator, hardware or exact fault.
Windows Update and Device Manager can provide a functional baseline driver, but they may not offer a simulator-specific fix available through the GPU manufacturer. If Device Manager says the best driver is already installed, that means the Windows catalogue found nothing newer; it does not necessarily mean no later supported package exists.
macOS graphics drivers arrive with operating-system updates. Linux users should normally use the graphics stack supported by their distribution. Console owners cannot install a GPU driver separately: on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro, MSFS 2024 receives graphics support through console system software and simulator updates.
What is the best NVIDIA driver for MSFS 2024?
There is no permanently best NVIDIA driver version for MSFS 2024. The sensible starting point is the latest stable Game Ready driver that supports your GPU and satisfies any minimum-driver warning shown by the simulator.
A Studio driver is also valid on a PC used for creative work, but it is not inherently faster or more stable in MSFS. Do not switch branches solely in pursuit of a few frames per second. If a new release introduces crashes, flashing clouds, poor frame pacing or a graphics-device error, the best driver for that system is temporarily the previous known-good release.

What about Intel graphics and hybrid laptops?
On a laptop with Intel integrated graphics plus an NVIDIA or AMD GPU, start with the computer maker’s validated packages if generic drivers have previously broken brightness control, external displays, sleep, power modes or GPU switching. Some laptops render the simulator on the dedicated GPU but route the finished image through the integrated GPU, so both drivers can matter.
Check Task Manager > Performance while the simulator is running to identify the active GPU. Do not disable the integrated adapter merely to force the dedicated GPU; on some designs it controls the internal display. Use Windows’ per-application graphics preference or the manufacturer’s performance mode instead.
How do I update a graphics driver safely?
A controlled update makes it possible to tell whether the driver improved the simulator or caused a regression.
- Record the existing driver and settings. In
Device Manager > Display adapters > GPU > Properties > Driver, note the installed version. Save screenshots of the simulator preset, resolution, render scale and any driver-control-panel profile. - Establish a repeatable baseline. Use the same aircraft, airport, weather preset, time, camera and traffic level. Record frame rate or frame time only after scenery and shaders have settled.
- Identify every display adapter. Hybrid laptops may list both an integrated and dedicated GPU. Confirm which adapter renders the simulator rather than updating only the first one shown.
- Obtain the correct official package. Match the exact GPU family, supported Windows release and laptop or desktop package where that distinction is offered. Download it before removing anything.
- Read the known issues. If the release notes mention your simulator, VR headset or graphics API, check whether the item is a fix or an unresolved problem. A normal maintenance update does not justify installing a beta package blindly.
- Close graphics applications. Exit the simulator, VR software, capture programs, browser video, overlays and GPU-tuning tools. The display may flicker or briefly go black while Windows replaces the active driver.
- Run a standard installation first. Installing over the existing driver preserves profiles and is sufficient when the old release works normally. Install only the components you use rather than every optional extra.
- Restart and verify. Reboot Windows, confirm the expected version in Device Manager and check that the simulator still uses the intended GPU, resolution and refresh rate.
- Repeat the baseline flight. The first run may stutter while shader caches are rebuilt. Judge the new driver only after that activity subsides, then compare frame time, crashes, artefacts and repeatable stutters.
The mistake we see most often is changing the driver, simulator, add-ons and graphics preset at the same time. Make one category of change, test it, and keep a note of the last stable combination.
Should I restart my PC after updating NVIDIA drivers?
Yes, restart the PC after an NVIDIA driver update even when the installer does not demand it. Modern installers can reload much of the graphics stack without rebooting, but a restart clears old driver modules and services before MSFS, X-Plane or another simulator begins compiling shaders.
Choose Restart in Windows rather than simply shutting down and switching the PC back on. Windows Fast Startup can preserve part of the previous kernel session during a normal shutdown. The same restart advice applies after AMD and Intel graphics updates.
Should I use a driver booster download?
No, a third-party driver booster download is not the safe way to maintain a simulator PC. These utilities can install generic laptop drivers, change unrelated chipset and audio packages at the same time, or select a release that is newer but inappropriate for the hardware.
Use the GPU or computer manufacturer’s official support channel instead. If a booster has already changed the display driver, note what it installed, replace it with the correct official package, restart and test before altering anything else.
Should I clean install Intel graphics drivers?
No, you should not clean install Intel drivers for every routine update. Use the standard in-place installation while the existing driver is stable; choose Intel’s clean-install option, if offered, only for a failed update, corrupted settings, persistent artefacts or a driver package that will not replace correctly.

A clean installation removes profiles and can reset scaling, colour and application-specific options. Save those settings first. On a hybrid laptop, have the manufacturer’s package ready before removing the existing Intel driver so Windows is not left using a basic display adapter.
The same decision applies to NVIDIA and AMD: routine updates normally belong on top of the existing driver. A separate display-driver removal utility is a last resort after official clean-install and rollback methods fail, not a maintenance step to perform before every release.
Will updating the graphics driver improve flight simulator FPS?
A graphics-driver update may improve frame pacing, compatibility and stability, but it often produces little change in average FPS. The clearest gains occur when a release fixes an inefficient shader path, memory-management fault, VR problem or simulator-specific rendering bug.
A driver cannot add VRAM, correct overheating or remove a CPU main-thread limit. Prepar3D, FSX and busy MSFS locations can remain CPU-bound even with a powerful graphics card. Use a repeatable test and our graphics-settings and frame-rate guidance to establish whether the GPU is actually the limiting component.
Do not judge performance during the first flight after an update. Rebuilt shader caches can cause temporary stutters, especially when a new effect, airport or weather condition appears for the first time. MSFS rolling cache and downloaded scenery content are separate from the driver’s shader cache and do not need to be deleted for a routine update.
Can a driver update downgrade FSLTL textures?
A graphics driver cannot rewrite or downgrade the source textures in an FSLTL model package. If FSLTL aircraft look blurrier after an update, first check whether the simulator’s resolution, render scale, Texture Resolution or anisotropic-filtering settings were reset.
High traffic density can also exhaust VRAM and force MSFS to display lower mip levels or load detailed textures late. Compare the same scene with fewer injected aircraft. If your FSLTL installation offers a reduced-resolution texture option, confirm which package is installed and restore the full-resolution content only if the available VRAM can support it. Clearing the MSFS rolling cache will not replace local FSLTL model textures.
What should I do if the new driver causes crashes or black screens?
Roll back to the previous known-good driver, restart Windows and repeat the same controlled test. If the problem disappears after rollback and returns with the newer package, treat that release as the cause rather than lowering every simulator setting to hide it.
- Remove unstable tuning. Return custom GPU overclocks, undervolts and power limits to stock values. Disable recording overlays and hardware-monitoring hooks during the test.
- Try Windows rollback. Open
Device Manager > Display adapters > GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. The button may be unavailable if Windows no longer retains the old package. - Reinstall the earlier official release. If rollback is unavailable or does not restore all components, install the previous known-good package manually. Use its clean-install option only if a normal downgrade fails.

How do I fix an X-Plane 12 GPU crash?
If an X-Plane 12 GPU crash began immediately after a driver update, restore the previous stable driver first. A Vulkan device-loss message does not by itself prove that the graphics card has failed; driver regressions, unstable tuning, plug-ins and VRAM exhaustion can produce the same result.
- Read
Log.txt. X-Plane writes this file in its main folder. Look for Vulkan device loss, memory warnings and plug-in activity near the failure, but do not assume the final named plug-in is automatically responsible. - Test at stock settings. Remove custom overclocks and undervolts, close overlays and monitoring tools, then use a default aircraft with third-party plug-ins and complex scenery temporarily disabled.
- Check VRAM pressure. Reduce texture quality temporarily and test a simpler airport. If the crash disappears only when memory demand falls, a clean driver installation will not create additional VRAM.
- Rebuild generated data cautiously. After closing X-Plane, remove only its generated shader cache if corruption is suspected after a driver change. Do not delete preferences, aircraft or scenery as part of a blanket clean-up.
- Repair the simulator installation. Use the installation platform’s verify or repair function before reinstalling the whole simulator.
- Check the wider system. If other Vulkan, DirectX or 3D applications also crash, examine GPU temperature, power delivery, memory stability and hardware rather than treating X-Plane as the sole cause.
