Which graphics driver should I install?
Install the latest stable driver that supports your exact GPU, operating system and laptop or desktop model. Prefer the manufacturer's stable or recommended branch; use an optional or beta release only when its release notes address your simulator, hardware or a specific fault you have.
For a desktop PC, the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel package is normally the right choice. On a laptop with switchable graphics, begin with the computer manufacturer's package if generic drivers have caused brightness controls, external displays, power modes or GPU switching to fail. Both the integrated and dedicated graphics components may need compatible drivers.
macOS graphics drivers arrive through operating-system updates. Linux users should normally use the graphics package supported by their distribution. Xbox and PlayStation users cannot install GPU drivers separately; graphics updates are included in console system software.
How do I update a flight simulator graphics driver safely?
On Windows, use a controlled update and change nothing else until the new driver has been tested.
- Record a baseline. Note the installed driver version, simulator graphics preset, resolution and any per-simulator driver profile. - Identify the active GPU. Check the Performance page in Windows Task Manager or expand
Display adaptersin Device Manager. A common mistake on hybrid laptops is updating the integrated GPU while the simulator actually renders on the dedicated GPU, or vice versa. - Obtain the correct package. Use the GPU or computer manufacturer's official update application or support channel. Match the GPU family, Windows version and 64-bit architecture rather than relying on a third-party driver-updater utility.
- Close graphics applications. Exit the simulator, VR software, video capture tools and GPU-tuning utilities. Save screenshots of custom control-panel settings because an installation can reset profiles.
- Run a standard installation first. An in-place update preserves more settings and is sufficient when the existing driver works normally. Do not select every optional component merely because it is offered.
- Restart and verify. Reboot Windows even if the installer does not demand it, then confirm that the expected driver version is installed and that the simulator still uses the dedicated GPU and intended resolution.
- Retest the same flight. The first launch may stutter while shader caches are rebuilt, so do not judge the driver from the opening minute. Once compilation activity settles, compare frame time, visual artefacts, crashes and repeatable stutters with the baseline.
When a clean installation is justified
Use a clean installation only after a normal update fails or when there are signs of corrupted driver components. It resets driver profiles and may rebuild shader caches, so using it for every routine update creates extra work without guaranteeing better performance.

A separate driver-removal utility is a last resort, not a routine maintenance tool. It can remove laptop-specific components and leave Windows using a basic display driver until the correct package is installed.
Common driver-update mistakes
- Installing a package for the wrong GPU family or operating system.
- Using an unofficial “driver booster” that cannot account for laptop customisations.
- Updating the driver, simulator, add-ons and graphics settings together, making the cause of a regression impossible to isolate.
- Deleting every simulator cache before testing; only shader caches are directly relevant, and the installer may already have rebuilt them.
- Judging performance during initial shader compilation.
- Assuming a driver can compensate for insufficient VRAM, overheating or a CPU-limited main thread.
Will a graphics driver update improve flight simulator FPS?
A graphics driver update can improve compatibility, frame pacing and stability, but it does not guarantee higher average FPS. The largest benefits usually appear when a release fixes a simulator-specific rendering fault, memory-management problem, VR issue or inefficient shader path.
If the simulator reports a main-thread or CPU limitation, changing the graphics driver is unlikely to produce a meaningful gain. Stability is often the better reason to update. Device-lost errors, black screens, Vulkan initialisation failures, flashing textures and crashes during scenery loading can all be driver-related, although add-ons, overlays, overclocks and failing hardware can produce similar symptoms.
What should I do if the new driver causes crashes?
Roll back to the previous known-good driver, restart Windows and repeat the same controlled test. Do not keep lowering simulator settings until you have established whether the regression follows the driver.
- Try Windows rollback. Open Device Manager and use
Display adapters > GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. This option may be unavailable if Windows no longer retains the previous package. - Reinstall the earlier official release. If rollback is unavailable or incomplete, install the previous known-good package manually and use its clean-install option if necessary.
- Remove other variables. Test at stock GPU and CPU clocks with overlays disabled, then load a default aircraft and uncomplicated location.
