Learn when flight simulator head tracking drivers are required, what other software you need, and how to fix a tracker the sim cannot detect.
Most dedicated head trackers need the manufacturer’s driver or runtime plus its configuration software before a flight simulator can receive tracking data. A basic webcam may use the operating system’s built-in camera driver, but it still needs tracking software. On consoles, users cannot install PC drivers; support must be built into the simulator.
Across general PC flight simulation—including Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX and Prepar3D—there are three separate layers: the hardware driver, the tracking application and the simulator interface. Installing the driver does not necessarily provide the other two.
Which head-tracking setups need drivers?
The driver requirement depends on how the tracking device connects and presents itself to the operating system.

A webcam appearing correctly in the operating system only proves that the camera driver works. It does not mean the computer can calculate yaw, pitch, roll and positional movement from the image.
Do I also need head-tracking software or a plug-in?
Yes: a driver alone is rarely enough because the simulator needs processed tracking coordinates rather than raw camera or sensor data.
The tracking utility detects your face, reflectors or emitters, applies sensitivity curves and publishes the resulting movement. The simulator must then accept that output natively or through a compatible plug-in or bridge. Do not add a plug-in when the simulator already supports the tracker directly, as two active interfaces can produce duplicated or conflicting movement.

- Install the correct package. Use the software supplied for the exact tracker model and operating system, not an unrelated generic driver.
- Test outside the simulator. Confirm that the tracking utility sees the device and displays stable movement on every intended axis.
- Configure the simulator interface. Select the supported output method, enable any required plug-in and remove competing camera-control applications.
- Start and centre the tracker. The safest order is tracking hardware, tracking utility and then the simulator. Assign accessible controls for re-centring and pausing tracking.
Why is my head tracker detected but not working in the sim?
If the tracker moves correctly in its own utility but not in the cockpit, the driver is already doing its job; the fault is usually the output protocol, plug-in, profile or simulator camera setting.
- No device appears in the tracking utility: try a direct USB port, check camera privacy permission and confirm that the operating system recognises the device.
- The utility tracks correctly but the cockpit view does not move: start the utility before the simulator, enable its simulator output and verify that the required plug-in is loaded.
- The view snaps back or moves twice: disable a second tracker, duplicated camera plug-in or conflicting analogue view axis.
- Tracking is offset: sit in your normal position and use the tracker’s re-centre command. Reinstalling drivers will not correct a bad centre point.
- Movement is noisy or jerky: check reflections, room lighting, camera exposure and sensitivity curves. If movement is smooth in the utility but stutters only in the cockpit, investigate head tracking and simulator frame-rate problems instead of replacing the driver.
When should I reinstall the head-tracking driver?
Reinstall the driver only when the operating system or manufacturer’s utility no longer recognises the device, reports a driver error or stops detecting it after a system change.
- Close the simulator and tracking utility.
- Disconnect the tracker if its installation instructions require this.
- Remove and reinstall the correct manufacturer package.
- Restart the computer when requested.
- Test the tracker in its own utility before opening the simulator.
If the utility already shows stable head movement, leave the driver alone. Concentrate on the tracking profile, output interface, plug-in status and simulator camera assignments.
