Why does my monitor keep going black in a flight simulator?

Across PC flight simulators, a monitor that intermittently goes black usually indicates a dropped display signal, a graphics-driver reset, or a failed simulator renderer. First establish whether the monitor reports “No signal”, only the simulator window turns black, or the whole computer freezes, because each symptom requires a different fix.

This diagnostic method applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D, FSX and other PC simulators. A blackout occurring at a fixed interval and ending as soon as you move the mouse has a different cause again: display sleep, a screen saver or the monitor’s own eco timer.

What does the black screen symptom tell you?

The scope of the blackout is the quickest way to separate a monitor problem from a simulator, driver or computer fault.

How do I stop intermittent monitor blackouts?

Work from the display connection towards the simulator, changing one variable at a time so the successful fix identifies the cause.

  1. Determine what remains responsive. Open the monitor’s on-screen menu during the blackout and try Alt+Tab. If Windows still responds, Win+Ctrl+Shift+B restarts the Windows graphics stack; a restored picture suggests that the driver or display output hung, although it does not prove the driver was the original cause.
  2. Rule out inactivity settings. Temporarily disable the operating system’s display timeout and screen saver, then check the monitor for eco, automatic input-switching or sleep options. Some controller or joystick activity is not treated like keyboard and mouse input by every power-management configuration.
  3. Simplify the signal path. Shut down the PC and monitor, reseat the cable at both ends, and connect the display directly to the graphics card. Remove docks, adapters, splitters, capture devices and receivers for the test. Use one monitor and a known-good HDMI or DisplayPort cable capable of the selected resolution and refresh rate.
  4. Reduce display bandwidth. Temporarily lower the refresh rate and resolution, turn off HDR and variable refresh rate such as G-Sync or FreeSync, and compare borderless or windowed mode with exclusive full-screen mode where offered. If this stops the blackouts, restore each feature separately to find the incompatible mode.
  5. Return the GPU to a stable baseline. Remove user-applied GPU and video-memory overclocks or undervolts. Update or reinstall the graphics driver; if the problem began immediately after a driver change, test the previous stable driver instead.   6. Reduce simulator load. Lower render scaling, texture resolution, clouds, shadows and terrain or object detail. Disable high-resolution scenery, complex aircraft and other add-ons for one repeat flight. In MSFS 2024, use these settings that reduce VRAM consumption if the blackout appears at detailed airports or in demanding cockpits.
  7. Compare another workload and inspect Windows logs. Run another 3D application at the same resolution and refresh rate. If it also blacks out, concentrate on the display path, GPU and hardware rather than reinstalling the simulator. Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer may record a display-driver recovery, hardware error or unexpected restart at the exact time of the event.

What if only the simulator view turns black?

A black simulator viewport with a visible desktop, menu bar or mouse pointer usually means the monitor is still working and the rendering process has failed.

Try another full-screen mode, switch graphics API only if the simulator officially offers that choice, clear or rebuild its shader cache using the simulator’s supported method, and verify the core installation. Move third-party aircraft, scenery and utilities out of their active add-on location rather than deleting them, then restore them in small groups.

Why does the screen go black only during demanding flights?

Blackouts at detailed airports, in complex aircraft or at high resolutions point towards peak GPU load, VRAM pressure, temperature or power instability.

VRAM exhaustion more commonly causes stuttering or a simulator crash, but it can also contribute to a graphics-driver reset. High render scaling, several monitors, popped-out instrument panels, large textures and detailed scenery can push a previously marginal setup over its limit.

If lower settings stop the problem, do not assume that poor performance was the only issue. Check GPU temperature, restore stock clocks, confirm desktop power connectors are fully seated while the computer is switched off, and test the same route while adding settings back individually.

Can the monitor or cable really be at fault?

A cable or display-mode fault is likely when the monitor reports “No signal”, the blackout also occurs outside the simulator, or changing refresh rate immediately fixes it.

Test another cable, another output on the graphics card and another input on the monitor. Blackouts during loading screens or transitions between menus and the cockpit often indicate a resolution, refresh-rate or HDR handshake rather than excessive simulator load. If the monitor’s own on-screen menu vanishes or its power light changes, test its power connection and another source before blaming the GPU.

What about Xbox or PlayStation?

The same isolation logic applies on a console, but there is no PC graphics driver to reinstall. Connect the console directly to the display, test another HDMI cable and input, power-cycle both devices, and temporarily disable HDR, variable refresh rate and high-refresh output. If several games black out, the simulator is unlikely to be the cause.

When is a hardware fault likely?

A hardware fault becomes likely when blackouts persist with one known-good display cable, stock clock settings, reduced graphics options and no add-ons, especially if other 3D software fails too.

  • Coloured blocks, flashing polygons or corruption before the blackout suggest GPU or video-memory instability.
  • A complete restart under load points towards power, temperature or broader system stability rather than a monitor setting.
  • One monitor failing with several source devices points towards that monitor or its power supply.
  • Every monitor losing signal together points towards the GPU, graphics driver or computer rather than an individual panel.

Do not open a monitor or power supply yourself. If there is a burning smell, electrical noise or visible cable damage, switch the equipment off and have it inspected rather than continuing simulator tests.
