Learn how to dock and retract jetways in X-Plane 12, identify native, SAM and AutoGate systems, and fix bridges that will not move.
To use a jetway in X-Plane 12, park precisely at a stand with an animated bridge, set the parking brake, stop the engines, then activate the jetway command assigned in Settings > Keyboard. If nothing moves, the scenery may use a plug-in-controlled bridge, lack compatible aircraft-door data or contain only a static model.
How do I connect a native X-Plane 12 jetway?
The reliable method is to bind X-Plane 12’s jetway command and operate it only after the aircraft is correctly parked.
- Choose a contact stand. Select a gate that visibly has a bridge connected to the terminal. Remote stands and some decorative gates have no working jetway.
- Park on the correct mark. Follow the lead-in line, marshaller or visual docking guidance. Stop at the mark for your aircraft size; being even a few metres too far forward or sideways can put the door outside the bridge’s travel range.
- Secure the aircraft. Set the parking brake, shut down the engines and switch off the anti-collision beacon. Not every controller requires all three, but this state gives native and plug-in systems the best chance of responding.
- Assign the jetway control. Open Settings > Keyboard, search for
jetway, and bind an unused key to the command that toggles or operates it. Do not assume that Ctrl+J will work; that familiar shortcut comes from other simulators and may be unassigned in X-Plane. - Connect the bridge. Return to the cockpit, press the assigned control once and allow the animation to finish. Open the aircraft door using its cockpit control, tablet or menu if required.
- Retract before pushback. Close the door, operate the same command again and wait until the bridge is fully clear before releasing the parking brake.
Which jetway system is the airport using?
You can identify the controller from the airport documentation, plug-in interface and bridge behaviour; its appearance alone is not reliable.
| Jetway type | How it is operated | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Native X-Plane 12 | Use the jetway command found through the keyboard or controller settings. | The stand must contain an animated bridge, and the aircraft needs usable door-position data. |
| SAM-controlled | Use the SAM interface or its automatic connection option, depending on the airport. | The required plug-in must be loaded and compatible with the scenery. |
| AutoGate or legacy system | Connection is often automatic after correct parking and shutdown. | The appropriate legacy plug-in must load successfully; older X-Plane 11 scenery is not guaranteed to work properly in X-Plane 12. |
| Static scenery object | It cannot be operated. | A visible bridge is not proof that it has animation or a controller. |
Third-party airport packages should state which system they require. Before replacing a static airport, check that the package explicitly supports X-Plane 12 and its stated controller; our X-Plane airport scenery and utility downloads include options for expanding the simulator.
Why will the X-Plane 12 jetway not move?
The most common causes are incorrect parking, a missing plug-in, incompatible aircraft-door data or a bridge that was never animated.
- Wrong parking position: align the nose wheel with the correct stopping mark rather than judging the door position from the cockpit. A stand designed for a regional jet may not accommodate a wide-body aircraft.
- Wrong control system: the native command does not necessarily operate SAM or AutoGate scenery. Use the interface or command belonging to the controller specified by the airport package.
- Unsafe aircraft state: apply the parking brake, shut down the engines and turn off the beacon. Some automatic controllers will wait indefinitely while an engine or beacon remains on.
- Unsupported aircraft: try the same stand with a default X-Plane airliner. If that works, the add-on aircraft probably has missing or unusual boarding-door coordinates.
- Plug-in failure: confirm that the controller appears in X-Plane’s Plugins menu. If it does not, inspect
Log.txtin the main X-Plane folder for loading errors or missing dependencies. - Conflicting airport scenery: duplicate versions of an airport can produce overlapping or disconnected bridges. Keep one active airport package and check its priority in
Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini.
Why does the bridge connect to the wrong place?
A bridge that reaches the fuselage, wing or wrong door usually indicates bad parking alignment, an unsuitable gate or incorrect door coordinates in the aircraft definition. Test a larger compatible stand first, then compare the result with a default aircraft to separate an airport problem from an aircraft problem.
Do jetways open aircraft doors or board passengers?
Jetway movement and aircraft-door animation are usually separate systems. Operate the door through the aircraft’s own controls, and do not expect the native jetway command to generate passengers, boarding progress or ground-service activity unless the aircraft or another add-on specifically provides those features.
Does X-Plane 12 ATC operate the jetway?
No, a taxi clearance or parking instruction does not normally dispatch the bridge. Park at the assigned or selected stand, then operate the native or plug-in jetway yourself; our practical explanation of X-Plane 12’s ATC controls covers the separate clearance and taxi process.
