The usual arrangement is mouse for cockpit interaction and camera movement, with the keyboard covering aircraft commands and basic flight control.

Full-fidelity aircraft generally have clickable cockpits. Simplified aircraft, including Flaming Cliffs-style modules, rely more heavily on keyboard commands and may not let you click their cockpit controls at all. That is a feature of the aircraft, not a mouse configuration fault.

How do you set up mouse and keyboard controls?

DCS World can use both devices without a special setup, but bindings must be checked separately for every aircraft and sometimes for individual crew positions.

  1. Select the correct aircraft: open the Controls menu and choose the module or control layer you intend to fly. Changing a binding under another aircraft will not alter the active module.
  2. Check both device columns: confirm that the required commands appear under Keyboard and that mouse axes remain assigned to the intended view functions.
  3. Configure cockpit interaction: locate the command containing “clickable mouse cockpit” and assign a convenient toggle if necessary. This switches between using the mouse cursor and moving the view.
  4. Remove only genuine conflicts: clear accidental duplicate axis assignments, but do not erase mouse camera bindings merely because the keyboard has view commands too.
  5. Test inside the cockpit: verify view movement, cursor operation and a simple keyboard command. Test an unguarded physical switch first; an unpowered display or system may show no response even though the click was registered.

Why does the mouse move the view instead of clicking switches?

The mouse is usually in camera-look mode rather than clickable-cockpit mode.

  • No cursor appears: use the assigned clickable-cockpit toggle, then move the mouse. Check the binding in the active aircraft profile if nothing changes.
  • The cursor appears but nothing is clickable: confirm that the aircraft actually has a clickable cockpit and that you are in an internal cockpit view.
  • The wheel zooms instead of turning a knob: place the pointer directly over the control’s active area. Mouse-wheel behaviour changes according to cursor position and interaction mode.
  • Only one aircraft has the problem: inspect that module’s profile and crew-seat bindings. DCS does not use one universal aircraft-control profile.
  • Keyboard commands stop responding: close any active chat box, control-search field or menu that may be capturing keystrokes, then return focus to the simulation.
  • A switch moves but the system stays off: check electrical power, safety guards and system interlocks. This is usually an aircraft-procedure issue rather than failed input.

Is a mouse and keyboard enough for DCS World?

A mouse and keyboard are enough to learn cockpit procedures and fly, but they are not ideal for precise aircraft control.

Keyboard inputs make formation flying, helicopter hovering, carrier landings and air-to-air refuelling considerably harder. Mouse movement is primarily intended for looking and cockpit interaction; DCS does not treat it as a universal analogue flight stick across every aircraft.

A joystick is the most useful first upgrade, followed by a throttle and rudder control if the aircraft requires them.
