To use a second monitor with a flight simulator, set the operating system to extend the desktop, arrange the screens correctly, then place a simulator view, popped-out instrument or companion app on monitor two. The exact view and panel controls differ between Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX.
How do I set up two monitors for flight simulation?
The reliable method is to configure both monitors before launching the simulator, then decide whether the second screen will show instruments, a desktop app or another rendered view.
- Connect both monitors to the graphics card. On a desktop with a dedicated GPU, use its display outputs rather than mixing them with motherboard video connections. A basic USB display adaptor may be adequate for maps, but it is a poor choice for a rendered simulator view.
- Extend the desktop. In Windows, press
Win+Pand chooseExtend. Open Display settings, identify the monitors, and drag their diagrams so their left, right and vertical positions match the physical arrangement. On macOS, disable display mirroring and arrange the screens in Displays settings. - Set resolution and scaling. Start with each panel's native resolution. Different Windows scaling percentages can work, but they sometimes cause blurry text, oversized panels or an offset mouse pointer in older simulators.
- Choose the main display. Make the cockpit monitor the operating system's main display if the simulator repeatedly opens on the wrong screen.
- Launch the simulator in a suitable display mode. Use windowed or borderless mode when a panel must be dragged between screens. Simulators with native per-monitor rendering can instead run a full-screen view on each display.
- Move or export the required content. A normal map or planning application can simply be dragged across. A cockpit gauge or simulator camera must first be popped out, undocked or assigned to that monitor using the simulator's own controls.
Keep the monitor arrangement stable after saving a layout. Disconnecting a screen, changing its resolution or swapping ports can alter its Windows identity and leave saved panel windows off-screen.
Which second-monitor layout should I choose?
Choose the layout according to what you need to see and how much graphics performance you can spare.

For most home cockpits, a popped-out primary flight display or a chart window gives more practical value than another external camera. A second 3D view makes sense when side visibility or a wrap-around cockpit is the priority.
How do different flight simulators use the second screen?
Each simulator handles detached panels and additional views differently, so use its native method rather than stretching one ordinary window across both monitors.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024
On PC, hold Right Alt and left-click a supported cockpit display or control to create a separate window, then drag that window to monitor two. Not every gauge can be detached, and a popped-out screen may omit its surrounding bezel and physical buttons. X-Plane 12
X-Plane 12 provides native monitor roles in its graphics configuration. Each display can carry a full-screen simulator view with its own field of view and offsets, while supported instrument windows can also be moved separately. FSX and Prepar3D
Run FSX or Prepar3D in windowed mode, open the required panel or view, choose its Undock Window command, and drag it onto the second monitor. If the window remains locked inside the main simulator frame, it has not been undocked.
These older simulators are particularly sensitive to mixed display scaling. If clicks do not line up with controls, use matching scaling percentages as a test and restart the simulator after changing them.
Can consoles use a second flight-simulator monitor?
Console editions cannot create a Windows-style extended desktop for independent simulator panels. This applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox and to MSFS 2024 on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro.
An HDMI splitter can duplicate the console picture onto two displays, but it cannot put instruments on one screen and the outside view on another. Independent views and draggable panel windows require the PC version.
Why can I not move a simulator panel to monitor two?
A panel normally refuses to move because the desktop is duplicated, the simulator is in an incompatible full-screen mode, or the panel has not been detached from the main window.
- Both screens show the same picture: change Windows from
DuplicatetoExtend. - The mouse stops at the screen edge: rearrange the monitor diagrams in Display settings so their edges touch in the correct positions.
- The panel remains inside the simulator: use the simulator's pop-out or undock command before dragging it.
- The window has disappeared: select it from the taskbar and press
Win+Shift+Left ArroworWin+Shift+Right Arrowto move it between monitors. - Text is blurry or clicks are offset: test matching display scaling, then close and reopen the simulator.
- The monitor has no signal: verify its input selection, cable and graphics-card connection. A motherboard output may be disabled when a dedicated GPU is installed.
Does a second monitor reduce flight-simulator FPS?
A second desktop monitor has little effect by itself, but another 3D view or animated cockpit display can reduce frame rate. The cost depends on secondary resolution, aircraft display complexity, simulator rendering and available GPU capacity.
If performance falls, remove extra 3D views first, reduce the secondary view's resolution where supported, and compare performance with instrument pop-outs closed. Mixed refresh rates and variable-refresh settings can also produce uneven motion on some systems. If frame pacing becomes erratic, test both monitors at a conventional matching refresh rate before changing the simulator's graphics settings.
