Learn what FSX Slew mode does, how to toggle it with Y, position an aircraft precisely, and fix keyboard or number-pad controls that do not respond.
In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, Slew mode temporarily suspends normal flight physics so you can reposition an aircraft freely in any direction. Press Y to enter it, use the keyboard or assigned controller axes to move and rotate the aircraft, stop and level it, then press Y again to resume normal flight.
What does Slew mode do in FSX?
Slew mode moves the aircraft without requiring thrust, lift or normal aerodynamic control. It is useful for correcting a poor starting position, inspecting scenery, composing screenshots or recovering an aircraft stuck inside an object.
It is not the same as pausing. Normal flight handling is suspended while Slew is active, but FSX resumes the flight model immediately when you leave it. Some missions and multiplayer sessions may disable Slew or treat its use as invalid.
How do I use Slew mode safely?
The safest sequence is to enter Slew, position the aircraft with small inputs, stop all movement and check its attitude before returning to normal flight.
- Enter Slew mode. Press Y. FSX should display an on-screen Slew indication.
- Move the aircraft. Use the numeric keypad for horizontal movement and the altitude keys for vertical movement. Tap the keys for precise placement; holding them produces a much larger displacement.
- Set the position and attitude. When placing the aircraft on a runway or apron, use an outside view and lower it slowly. Keep the wheels at or just above the visible surface rather than sinking them into the terrain mesh.
- Stop all movement. Press Num Pad 5, level the wings and check the nose attitude. The Space bar can restore a straight-and-level attitude, but it also points the aircraft north, so do not use it when preserving the heading matters.
- Leave Slew mode. Press Y again. Be prepared to control the aircraft immediately because normal gravity, aerodynamics and ground contact resume at once.
Which keyboard controls move the aircraft in Slew mode?
FSX and FSX: Steam Edition normally use these default Slew controls, although an imported or customised control profile can change them.

Why are Y or the number-pad controls not working?
If the Slew shortcut or movement keys do nothing, the usual cause is a changed binding, a compact keyboard or input coming from another controller.
- Check the Slew assignment. Open FSX's Controls settings and look for the Slew mode on/off command. Reassign it if

Laptop top-row number keys are not normally substitutes for Num Pad commands. Use the keyboard's embedded keypad function, try the other Num Lock state or assign alternative keys.
- Centre connected controllers. A noisy joystick axis or an off-centre yoke can make the aircraft drift or rotate in Slew. Add a small dead zone or remove the conflicting Slew assignment.
- Consider session restrictions. A mission or multiplayer host can prevent Slew even when the key is assigned correctly.
How do I avoid crashing when I leave Slew mode?
Stop the aircraft, give it a safe attitude and ensure it is not intersecting terrain or scenery before pressing Y.
Near the ground, use A for controlled downward movement rather than holding the rapid-descent key. At altitude, do not assume the aircraft has suitable flying speed simply because it is positioned level. Leave enough height to recover, and expect add-on aircraft with custom systems or navigation logic to require stabilisation after a large relocation.
