Fix a missing X-Plane cockpit panel by checking the view, electrical power, aircraft files, plugins, version compatibility and Log.txt errors.
A missing cockpit panel in X-Plane usually means the aircraft is in the wrong view, its electrical or avionics power is off, required aircraft files or plugins failed to load, or the add-on targets another X-Plane version. First switch to a 3-D cockpit view, then test a default aircraft.
Is the cockpit missing, or are the screens just dark?
If the dashboard, controls and display frames are visible, the cockpit has loaded; dark screens normally indicate an aircraft power or brightness problem.
- No dashboard geometry: select the View menu’s 3-D cockpit command. A forward/no-panel view deliberately hides the cockpit.
- Panel visible but displays black: turn on the battery, required electrical buses, avionics and display brightness. Starting with engines running is a useful diagnostic, although complex aircraft may use their own start-state logic.
- Analogue instruments visible but custom displays absent: an aircraft-specific plugin or dependency probably failed.
- Panel vanishes after moving the camera: reset the cockpit view and re-centre any VR, head-tracking or camera utility. The viewpoint may be ahead of or inside the instrument panel.
How do I restore a missing X-Plane cockpit panel?
The quickest fix is to select the correct cockpit view, confirm aircraft power, then separate an add-on problem from an X-Plane-wide fault.
- Select the 3-D cockpit. Use the View menu rather than relying on a keyboard shortcut, because key assignments can be changed. Try the standard cockpit view before loading a saved quick look.
- Check electrical power. If physical controls and bezels are present, follow the aircraft’s start checklist and raise instrument or display brightness. A running engine alone does not guarantee that every avionics bus is powered.
- Load a default aircraft. Use the same cockpit view and an engines-running state. Our list of aircraft supplied with X-Plane 12 identifies suitable test aircraft. If a default cockpit works, the affected add-on, livery or its plugin is the likely cause.
- Reinstall the complete aircraft folder. Keep the
.acf, cockpit objects, textures, sounds and plugin folders together. A package normally resemblesAircraft/Aircraft Name/Aircraft Name.acf; copying only the.acffile will not work. Follow these X-Plane 12 aircraft installation and file checks if the folder came from an extracted archive. - Match the X-Plane major version. An aircraft being selectable does not prove that its cockpit is compatible. Use a release explicitly intended for your installed X-Plane generation. Do not resave an old aircraft in Plane Maker as an attempted conversion; that cannot replace missing cockpit assets or plugin code.
- Test plugin conflicts. Temporarily disable third-party global plugins, especially camera and display utilities, and reload the aircraft. Do not permanently remove the aircraft’s own plugin folder: many custom avionics depend on it. Operating-system security or a missing supplied dependency can also prevent that plugin from loading.

Log.txt. Reproduce the fault, close X-Plane and inspectLog.txtin the simulator’s main folder before launching it again. Search for the aircraft name and errors involving objects, textures or plugins. If every default aircraft is affected, the problem is probably a view assignment, camera plugin or preference rather than the downloaded aircraft. After backing up your settings, you can close X-Plane and temporarily rename Output/preferences; the simulator creates fresh preferences on its next launch. This also resets controls, graphics and saved views, so it should not be the first step.
Why is only one downloaded aircraft affected?
When other cockpits work, the affected aircraft usually has an incomplete installation, failed custom-avionics plugin, incompatible version or faulty livery override.

World-object density and scenery settings do not normally remove an aircraft’s cockpit, so lowering or raising those options is unlikely to help.
Does every X-Plane aircraft include a 2-D panel?
No. Many modern X-Plane aircraft provide only a 3-D cockpit, while some older aircraft rely mainly on a 2-D panel and have little or no modelled 3-D interior.
A pop-out instrument is separate from a complete 2-D cockpit. It may be unsupported by that aircraft, unpowered or opening beyond the edge of the desktop after a monitor change. Use our checks for pop-out instruments and off-screen windows before treating a missing popup as a broken cockpit.
If a default 3-D cockpit works but the affected aircraft still has no panel after a clean installation and version check, the package itself is incomplete or incompatible. Resetting more X-Plane settings is unlikely to repair it.
