How do I adjust cockpit instrument lighting in X-Plane?

To adjust cockpit instrument lighting in X-Plane, use the aircraft’s panel-light or instrument-light rheostat in the 3D cockpit. Which cockpit lighting control should I use?

For illuminated gauge markings and panel labels, use the control labelled Panel, Instrument, Integral or Inst. Dome and flood controls illuminate cockpit surfaces instead, so they may leave the actual instruments difficult to read.

Some dimmers have an off detent before their adjustable range, while others combine a light switch and rheostat in one control. Glass cockpits often have separate brightness controls for the captain’s display, first officer’s display, navigation screen and standby instruments.

How do I bind panel brightness to the keyboard or joystick?

Bind the two panel-brightness commands when you want a convenient control that does not require finding a small cockpit knob in darkness.

  1. Open the keyboard settings: From X-Plane’s settings screen, select the keyboard configuration section.
  2. Search for the commands: Enter Panel Brightness and locate Panel Brightness Up and Panel Brightness Down.
  3. Assign two unused keys: Give each command a distinct key and check for conflicts with existing assignments.
  4. Configure joystick buttons if preferred: Open the joystick settings, select a button and search for the same command names. Confirm that you are editing the control profile used by the loaded aircraft.
  5. Test at dusk or night: Return to the cockpit, supply electrical power and press each control several times while watching the panel-light rheostat and instrument backlighting.

Does Panel Brightness control every cockpit light?

No. The generic Panel Brightness commands normally adjust X-Plane’s standard panel-light channel, not every display, floodlight or custom lighting circuit.

Included aircraft commonly respond to these commands, but a detailed add-on may operate its lights through custom datarefs or plugin logic. In that case, use the aircraft’s own dimmer knobs or documented controls. A screen labelled BRT can also remain dark even when the surrounding panel is fully illuminated.

Use the cockpit controls when you need independent lighting zones. Use keyboard or joystick commands when the aircraft follows X-Plane’s standard brightness system and one combined adjustment is sufficient.

Why are my X-Plane instruments still dark?

Dark instruments usually result from missing electrical power, the wrong dimmer, an aircraft-specific lighting system or a control assignment that is being overridden.

  • Check the electrical buses: Turn on the required battery, generator or alternator and avionics controls. A battery master alone does not energise every display or lighting circuit in every aircraft.
  • Move the dimmer past its off detent: A knob at its minimum position may act as a hard switch rather than merely producing very faint light.
  • Try each lighting zone: Panel, flood, pedestal and display brightness are separate controls in many cockpits.
  • Verify the active control profile: Aircraft-specific joystick profiles can omit or replace an assignment that works elsewhere.
  • Check for add-on logic: If a knob moves and immediately returns to zero, a plugin or script may be writing its own brightness value continuously.
  • Test under darker conditions: Instrument backlighting can be difficult to see in strong daylight even when it is functioning correctly.

The quickest isolation test is to load an included X-Plane aircraft at night and try both its physical dimmer and your assigned commands. If that aircraft works, the problem belongs to the original aircraft’s systems or plugin. If neither aircraft responds, recheck power, assignments and any scripts that modify cockpit lighting.

Do X-Plane 11, 12 and Mobile use the same method?

Desktop X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12 use the same basic approach: operate the cockpit dimmer or assign the searchable panel-brightness commands.

X-Plane 12’s lighting and exposure can make a powered cockpit look different from the same aircraft in X-Plane 11, while some X-Plane 11 spill-light effects depend on its visual-effects configuration. Graphics adjustments should not be used to disguise an unpowered panel or a dimmer set to zero.

X-Plane Mobile relies primarily on the controls supplied in each aircraft’s touch cockpit. Keyboard and joystick configuration steps from the desktop simulator may therefore be unavailable or work differently.
