Seit der Fertigstellung des ersten Prototyps im Jahre 1955 wurden über 35.000 Exemplare der C172 hergestellt. Sie ist demzufolge das beliebteste einmotorige Flugzeug der Welt. Als eines der ersten Cessna-Flugzeuge mit Bugradfahrwerk wurde die 172 schnell von immer mehr Geschäftspiloten bevorzugt. Ihre Zuverlässigkeit und einfache Bedienung (verbunden mit durchdachter Konstruktion und strukturellen Neuerungen) haben ihr seit Jahrzehnten eine gleichbleibende Beliebtheit gesichert.
