Als eines der ersten Cessna-Flugzeuge mit Bugradfahrwerk wurde die 172 schnell von immer mehr Geschäftspiloten bevorzugt. Ihre Zuverlässigkeit und einfache Bedienung (verbunden mit durchdachter Konstruktion und strukturellen Neuerungen) haben ihr seit Jahrzehnten eine gleichbleibende Beliebtheit gesichert.
