What is KJFK, and what should flight sim pilots know?

KJFK is the ICAO identifier for John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York City. Flight sim pilots should expect dense Class B airspace, four runways in two crossing alignments, changing runway configurations, complex taxi routes and detailed instrument procedures; brief the charts, arrival, approach, missed approach and parking route before departure.

What do KJFK and JFK mean?

KJFK is the four-letter ICAO airport code used in flight plans, avionics and most simulator search fields. JFK is the airport’s IATA code and three-letter FAA location identifier, while controllers commonly use the radio name “Kennedy”.

The airport sits in south-eastern Queens beside Jamaica Bay, not in Manhattan. It has four runways: 4L/22R, 4R/22L, 13L/31R and 13R/31L. Its position beneath New York Class B airspace places it close to traffic serving LaGuardia, Newark and other regional airports.

Why is KJFK challenging in a flight simulator?

JFK is challenging because the runway, arrival, approach and taxi plan must work together in a busy and tightly managed terminal area.

A common mistake we see is selecting a runway from the departure airport and never checking it again. At KJFK, a configuration change can alter the approach transition, landing distance, taxi route and fuel needed for extra vectors.

How should I brief a KJFK arrival and approach?

A sound KJFK brief covers the navigation data, STAR, runway, approach, missed approach and route to the parking stand.

  1. Check the airport data. Open the airport diagram, runway information, procedures and frequencies for KJFK. For actual flying, use approved, up-to-date aeronautical publications and NOTAMs; simulator reference material is not a substitute.
  2. Compare the chart with the simulator. Confirm that the planned STAR and approach exist in the aircraft’s navigation database. Different AIRAC cycles can rename fixes, change transitions or omit a procedure entirely.
  3. Build the arrival carefully. Select the correct STAR transition, expected runway and approach transition. Inspect the resulting route for doubled fixes, sharp turns, unexplained loops and discontinuities.
  4. Check every restriction. Work backwards from the approach to decide where descent and deceleration must begin. Heavy jets can meet an altitude constraint yet still arrive too fast to configure.

  6. Verify the avionics. Check that the active flight-plan leg is sensible and that the aircraft will use the required GPS, localiser or other navigation source. If needed, review how to load and fly an instrument approach without common mode errors.
  7. Prepare for a change. Retain enough fuel for vectors, a missed approach and another attempt. Entering a second likely approach in the secondary flight plan, where the aircraft supports one, can reduce workload.

A route discontinuity is not always a database error. Some procedures end in radar vectors or require manual sequencing, so deleting every discontinuity can make the aircraft turn towards the next fix without clearance. Check the chart before changing the route.

Which KJFK runway and approach should I choose?

Use the runway assigned by ATC; without a controller, choose one compatible with the simulated wind, visibility, aircraft performance and airport flow rather than simply selecting the nearest runway.

  • ILS approach: usually the clearest choice for instrument practice or poor visibility, provided the selected runway and simulator scenery support it.
  • RNAV approach: suitable when the aircraft and installed navigation data support the procedure. Confirm any equipment or authorisation requirements shown on the chart.
  • Visual approach: useful in good visibility, but it still requires awareness of Class B traffic, runway alignment and any charted visual routing.
  • Curved approach to Runway 13L: some JFK procedures towards 13L involve a turning path rather than a long straight-in final. These demand careful speed control and should not be improvised from an outdated chart.

Do not activate an approach merely to make the magenta line look complete. Premature activation can remove part of the arrival or command a turn towards the initial approach fix. When receiving vectors, maintain the assigned heading and use the avionics method intended for intercepting the final course.

Taxiing and parking at JFK after landing

Taxiing at KJFK is easier when the first runway exit and intended terminal area are briefed before touchdown.

After vacating, cross the holding-position markings completely, stop if necessary and identify the next taxiway on the airport diagram. Never cross another runway without an explicit clearance when flying with a human controller, even if the simulator’s default ATC or progressive-taxi line suggests otherwise.

Terminal and airline assignments can differ between the real airport, stock scenery and add-on scenery. Choose a stand that exists in your installed airport rather than following a real-world gate number blindly. If the controller’s taxi instruction uses a taxiway missing from your scenery, say that your airport layout differs and request an alternative. Guessing at JFK can put the aircraft on an active runway or inside the wrong terminal area.
