A second-hand boxed DVD copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) can usually be installed and activated when the first user permanently transfers the retail licence, removes their copies, and supplies every disc plus the matching genuine product key or keys. FSX: Steam Edition licences do not transfer with used discs or keys.
Can every boxed version or DVD copy of Flight Simulator X be transferred?
No: a box or DVD does not, by itself, make an FSX licence transferable. The original retail terms for boxed FSX permit the first user to make a one-time permanent transfer directly to another user, provided the complete software and licence are transferred and the first user keeps no installation or copy.

Some later FSX packages contain a DVD but still activate through Steam. Once the included Steam code has been redeemed, selling the disc or writing down the code does not transfer ownership. An allegedly unused Steam code is risky because its redemption status cannot be judged from the packaging.
The one-time-transfer wording also matters if the seller bought FSX second-hand themselves. Do not assume that a third or later owner has another transfer available under the original retail terms.
What must come with a second-hand boxed copy of FSX?
A complete used copy needs all media, matching keys and licence material originally supplied with that edition. Before paying, check for:
- Every installation DVD belonging to the advertised edition
- A legible product key that matches FSX Standard, Deluxe or Gold as applicable
- The Acceleration DVD and its matching key or licensing material for FSX Gold
- Original packaging, labels and printed licence material supplied as proof of ownership
- Confirmation that the first user has removed FSX and retained no copies
A DVD without its key is not enough, and a key cannot be recovered from the disc. A receipt, manual or empty box cannot replace a missing key. Avoid keys shown publicly in listing photographs, supplied only by email or sold separately from the original package; they may already have been copied or blocked.

How do I install and activate Flight Simulator X from DVD?
Install the original boxed edition in the correct order, then activate each component through the official prompt using its matching key.
- Identify the edition. Match the wording on the DVDs, packaging and key labels. A Deluxe key will not legitimise unrelated media, and an Acceleration key is not a base FSX key.
- Complete the licence transfer. Obtain the full package and confirm that the first user has deleted every installed or backup copy.
- Install the base simulator. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account, run setup from the original FSX media and change discs when requested.
- Enter and activate the base key. Type the code exactly as printed. Use only the official activation options offered by FSX; do not replace licensing files or use key generators.
- Install Acceleration when applicable. For FSX Gold, install and activate the Deluxe base first, then install Acceleration with its own supplied licensing material.
- Apply updates for the correct edition. A standalone boxed Standard or Deluxe installation uses the boxed service-pack sequence. Acceleration incorporates the relevant boxed updates. Do not install boxed service packs over FSX: Steam Edition.
Installation and activation are separate checks. The DVDs may copy successfully even though the activation system later refuses the key.
How can I install the FSX DVD without an optical drive?
Use an external USB DVD drive or create local disc images from your own original media on a computer that can read them. Owning a product key does not authorise an unofficial download, and a boxed key cannot be redeemed as a Steam licence.
Why might a used FSX activation key fail?
A genuine-looking key can still fail because its edition, activation history or ownership does not satisfy the activation system.
- Wrong edition: the key was issued for different FSX media or for Acceleration rather than the base simulator.
- Mistyped character: a letter or number has been misread on a faded or damaged label.
- Activation limit: previous installations or major hardware changes have exhausted the activations accepted automatically.
- Continued use: the seller retained an installation or supplied the same key to several buyers.
- Invalid source: the key is counterfeit, blocked, publicly circulated or from a non-transferable copy.

Only the official activation system can accept or reset a retail key. If no official method offered by the activation dialogue succeeds, there is no legitimate third-party bypass; seek a refund from the seller.
Does boxed FSX need the original DVD after activation?
A successfully installed and activated retail copy normally runs without the installation DVD, but the original media remains part of the transferred package. Keep every disc and key because they will be needed if Windows is reinstalled or FSX is moved to another computer.
The product key is not a download entitlement. It cannot be entered into Steam, used to add FSX: Steam Edition to an account or used to reconstruct missing installation media.
Will a second-hand FSX copy work on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
A transferred boxed copy can run on Windows 10 or 11, but its legacy installer and licensing components can fail independently of the key's validity. Administrator permissions or compatibility settings may help an old installer, but they cannot make an invalid or exhausted key activate.

Do the previous owner's FSX add-ons transfer as well?
No, an FSX licence transfer does not automatically transfer commercial aircraft, scenery, weather tools or utilities. Each add-on has its own licence, serial number and account conditions, while freeware remains subject to its author's distribution terms.
Copied add-on folders may also depend on installers, registry entries or online activation. Treat every add-on as a separate product rather than assuming it belongs to the boxed FSX package.
