Find out if you can activate a second-hand copy of FSX, what boxed media and keys must transfer, and why FSX: Steam Edition is different.
Yes, a second-hand boxed retail copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator X can usually be installed and activated if the licence was properly transferred, the seller stopped using it, and the genuine product key still activates. FSX: Steam Edition is different: its licence belongs to the purchaser’s Steam account and is not transferred with used media.
Which second-hand FSX copies can be transferred?
The key distinction is between boxed retail FSX and FSX: Steam Edition. The boxed retail licence terms permit a one-time permanent transfer by the first user, provided the recipient accepts those terms and the original owner retains no copies or installations.
| FSX edition | Can it transfer? | What the buyer needs |
|---|---|---|
| Boxed FSX Standard or Deluxe | Potentially, subject to the retail licence and successful activation | Original discs, the matching genuine product key and the proof-of-licence material |
| Boxed FSX Gold Edition | Potentially | All FSX Deluxe and Acceleration media and every key supplied with the package |
| FSX: Steam Edition | No, not as a used standalone copy | The buyer must own the simulator through their own Steam account |
| OEM, promotional or not-for-resale copy | Depends on its specific terms | Check the licence supplied with that copy before buying |
A Steam installation has no transferable boxed key that the next owner can reuse. Our explanation of the boxed-versus-Steam ownership differences covers this distinction in more detail. Buying or taking over another person’s Steam account is not a legitimate substitute for transferring boxed FSX.
What must come with a used boxed copy of FSX?
A legitimate second-hand FSX package should include the original installation media, its matching product key and the proof-of-licence label or documentation supplied with that edition.
- Every installation disc belonging to the advertised edition
- A readable, genuine FSX product key that matches Standard, Deluxe or Gold as applicable
- The Acceleration disc and its supplied licensing material if the copy is FSX Gold
- Confirmation that the seller has removed FSX and retained no installation or copy
A disc by itself is not enough. The product key cannot be generated from the DVD, and a key printed in an online listing may already have been copied by several people. A box, manual or sales receipt also cannot replace a missing key.
How do I install and activate second-hand boxed FSX?
Install a transferred boxed copy in its original edition order, then use the official activation prompt when setup or the first run requests the key.
- Verify the edition. Match the discs, packaging and product key before installation. A key issued for a different FSX edition may be rejected.
- Complete the transfer. Ensure the seller has uninstalled FSX and handed over all copies, discs, keys and proof-of-licence material.
- Install the base simulator. Run setup from the original FSX media and enter the key exactly as printed, watching for similar-looking letters and numbers.
- Activate through FSX. Use the official online method or another official option displayed by the activation dialogue. Do not use cracks, key generators or modified licensing files.
- Install Acceleration if included. With FSX Gold, install the base Deluxe package first, then Acceleration, using the supplied material when requested.
- Apply the correct boxed updates. Standalone Standard or Deluxe installations normally require the boxed service packs in order. Follow our FSX Service Pack 1 installation sequence; do not apply boxed service packs to Steam Edition.
Why might a used FSX product key fail?
A used FSX key can fail even when the discs install correctly because licence transfer and activation approval are separate issues.
- The key belongs to another FSX edition.
- A character has been misread or the label is damaged.
- The key has reached its activation allowance after several installations or hardware changes.
- The same key has been retained or distributed by a previous owner.
- The key is blocked, counterfeit or was never valid for a transferable retail copy.
Uninstalling FSX from the seller’s computer does not automatically release an activation slot. If activation is refused, reinstalling from the same discs rarely changes the result; check our diagnosis of wrong-edition, reused and exhausted FSX keys. Only Microsoft’s activation system can accept or reset a key, so return the copy to the seller if no official activation route succeeds.
Will a second-hand FSX copy work on Windows 10 or 11?
A valid transferred licence can be installed on a modern Windows computer, but FSX’s age introduces compatibility and permission problems unrelated to ownership.
If installation succeeds but Windows 11 reports an out of date license error, use the specific Windows 11 licence-error checks. Compatibility settings can help the old installer run, but they cannot make an invalid or exhausted product key activate.
Do the previous owner’s FSX add-ons transfer too?
The FSX licence transfer covers only the Microsoft software included in that package. Commercial aircraft, scenery, utilities and weather engines normally have separate licence and account terms, while freeware remains subject to its author’s distribution conditions.
Do not assume that copied add-on folders, serial numbers or account credentials are included legally. Treat each add-on as a separate product and verify its transfer rights before installing it.
