How do I add AI airline traffic to a flight simulator?

To add AI airline traffic to a flight simulator, choose its built-in live or offline traffic, install a compatible traffic package, or run a PC traffic injector. Install the required aircraft models and liveries, disable competing traffic sources, check airport parking, then test at a busy hub during operating hours.

This is a general flight-simulator workflow covering Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane. Their traffic systems are not interchangeable: an FSX traffic BGL cannot be copied into MSFS or X-Plane, and a Windows injector cannot run directly on a console.

What does an AI airline traffic installation need?

Working AI traffic requires flight data, visible aircraft and a simulator-compatible system that puts those aircraft into the world.

  • Traffic source: live flight data, an offline schedule, compiled flight plans or generated routes.
  • Aircraft models and liveries: the visual aircraft assigned to each airline, type and flight.
  • Traffic controller: the simulator itself, a plugin or an external injector that creates and updates flights.
  • Suitable airports: gates and parking spaces large enough for the assigned aircraft, with usable taxi routes.

Which AI traffic method should I choose?

Choose built-in traffic for the simplest setup, an offline package for repeatable schedules, or an injector when airline matching and changing real-world operations matter most.

Offline schedules are best for repeatable scenes because the same simulator day and time can produce the same flights. Live traffic is less predictable: it may follow real-world time, depend on data coverage and omit flights that cannot be matched or injected.

How do I install AI airline traffic correctly?

The safest installation method is to verify compatibility first, install every dependency, and activate only one primary airline traffic source.

  1. Identify the exact simulator and platform. Check whether the add-on targets MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024, FSX, a specific Prepar3D generation or X-Plane. Also check the platform: PC software cannot be assumed to work on Xbox or PlayStation 5.
  2. Select one source of scheduled flights. Use built-in live traffic, built-in offline AI, a complete package or an injector. Do not combine sources merely to make an airport busier; that commonly produces duplicate flights and blocked gates.
  3. Install the aircraft library and liveries. An injector-only download may assume that a separate model library is already installed. With a conventional MSFS Community package, avoid an extra nested directory: the active package folder should directly contain files such as manifest.json and layout.json.
  4. Apply the add-on's traffic settings. Some packages use the simulator's airline-density controls, while external injectors bypass them and require built-in AI traffic to be disabled. Do not assume that setting every traffic slider to maximum is correct.
  5. Start and connect the injector if required. Confirm that it recognises the running simulator. If it remains disconnected, check its simulator selection, firewall permission and installation path before reinstalling the model library.
  6. Leave room at the gates. Static ground-aircraft or airport-life settings can occupy parking positions before scheduled traffic arrives. Reduce them if injected aircraft spawn remotely, disappear after landing or remain circling without a gate.
  7. Test at the right place and time. Use a large airline hub during its normal operating period and allow the source time to populate. A regional airport late at night may correctly have no scheduled airline movements.

How do I set up MSFS AI traffic in 2020 or 2024?

Microsoft Flight Simulator can use built-in live or offline traffic on every supported platform, while external traffic injectors are a Windows PC option.

MSFS 2020 traffic

MSFS 2020 runs on PC and Xbox, not PlayStation. Its built-in live traffic is the quickest choice; PC users can instead install a compatible aircraft library and injector for more controlled model matching and airline liveries.

MSFS 2024 AI traffic on PC, Xbox and PS5

MSFS 2024 supports built-in AI traffic on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. It launched on PC and Xbox on 19 November 2024, then on PS5 and PS5 Pro on 8 December 2025; MSFS 2020 was never released for PlayStation.

The quality of air-traffic aircraft in MSFS 2024 depends heavily on model availability and matching. A live feed may know that a flight exists but display a generic aircraft or livery when it cannot find the correct airline and type combination.

On Windows PC, a compatible injector can connect to the simulator and use an installed model library. Xbox and PS5 cannot run the injector's external executable or accept an ordinary PC Community-folder installation, so console users are limited to built-in traffic and in-sim content explicitly released for that console. Do not assume that an MSFS 2020 injector works unchanged in MSFS 2024. Models may be reusable when their package declares compatibility, but an injector also depends on simulator interfaces that can change after updates.

Can I install only the FSLTL Traffic Injector?

An FSLTL injector-only installation is not the normal complete setup: install FSLTL Base Models as well if you expect FSLTL aircraft and airline liveries.

  • FSLTL Traffic Injector supplies and controls the flights.
  • FSLTL Base Models supplies the aircraft models and texture sets used to represent them.

Base Models alone do not generate airline movements, while the injector cannot display a full set of correctly painted aircraft without a suitable model library. Avoid running FSLTL traffic alongside built-in live AI unless the installed release specifically describes that arrangement; otherwise duplicated flights and gate conflicts are likely.

FSLTL traffic injection is a PC setup, not a PS5 or Xbox option. For MSFS 2024, use only an installed release that explicitly states compatibility with that simulator rather than relying on MSFS 2020 instructions.

What changes in FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane?

Each simulator requires its own aircraft format, traffic files and installation method.

FSX and Prepar3D

FSX and Prepar3D commonly use dedicated AI aircraft in their active aircraft library plus compiled traffic BGL files in an active scenery location. The aircraft title referenced by the traffic plan must exactly match an installed title= entry; a similar file name or livery name is not enough.

The airline-traffic density setting controls which compiled flights are eligible to appear. Parking also matters: aircraft type, parking radius and airline parking codes can determine where an AI aircraft spawns.

A mistake we see regularly in FSX is mixing native traffic files with a legacy-format traffic BGL. One older-format BGL can suppress newer-format schedules, making an otherwise correct package appear broken. Temporarily removing recently added traffic BGLs is the fastest way to isolate that conflict.

X-Plane

X-Plane traffic must be built for its own AI system or a compatible plugin. Install the required aircraft and route libraries in the locations specified by that plugin, and verify support for the installed X-Plane generation. MSFS Community packages and FSX or Prepar3D traffic BGLs will not work in X-Plane.

Why is my AI airline traffic not showing?

AI traffic usually fails because its source is disabled, the injector is disconnected, the model library is missing, the package is in the wrong folder, or no flight is scheduled for the selected place and time.

  • No traffic anywhere: verify that one traffic source is enabled, its density is above zero and any required injector reports a simulator connection.
  • Injector connected but airport empty: check its filters, traffic radius, live-data connection and model-library dependency. Test at a larger hub.
  • Flights or labels appear without the expected aircraft: reinstall or reactivate the required models and check model-matching rules.
  • Only generic aircraft or liveries appear: the traffic source is working, but no exact airline-and-type match is available.
  • Aircraft appear in the air but not at gates: suitable parking may be missing or occupied by static ground aircraft.
  • Every flight appears twice: disable either built-in AI or the add-on source. In MSFS, remember that multiplayer aircraft are separate from AI traffic.
  • An MSFS package is ignored: check the active Community location, remove any extra wrapper folder and verify that the package supports the installed simulator generation.
  • FSX traffic vanished after another package was installed: isolate recently added traffic BGLs and check for the legacy-format conflict.

Can I use a flyable aircraft as an AI traffic aircraft?

A flyable aircraft can sometimes be assigned to AI traffic, but a purpose-built AI model is usually the better choice. Flyable models may load detailed cockpits, systems, effects and large textures for every AI instance, increasing CPU, memory and graphics load while still producing unreliable taxi or animation behaviour.

How do I make traffic busier without ruining performance?

Increase the aircraft count gradually within one traffic system rather than installing several competing injectors or schedule packages.

At a large hub, lower the number of active or parked aircraft first, followed by the injector's traffic radius if it provides one. Excessive density does more than reduce frame rate: it can saturate gates, create taxi queues, trigger repeated go-arounds and overload the simulator's ATC.

Efficient AI models make a substantial difference because each visible aircraft adds geometry, textures, animations and traffic logic. One correctly configured source with dedicated AI aircraft normally gives better results than multiple sources competing for the same airspace and parking positions.
