How do I add AI airline traffic to a flight simulator?

To add AI airline traffic to a flight simulator, use its built-in live or offline traffic, install a complete traffic package, or run a compatible traffic injector. Add any required aircraft models and liveries, enable only the intended traffic source, apply its recommended settings, and test at a busy airport.

For flight simulators generally—including Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane—the essential ingredients are the same: a traffic source, compatible aircraft models and somewhere for those aircraft to park. The installation method is not interchangeable between simulators.

Which AI traffic method should I use?

Use built-in traffic for simplicity, an offline package for repeatable schedules, or an injector when realistic airline routes and changing traffic are the priority.

A livery by itself does not create traffic, and a flight-plan file cannot display an aircraft unless its assigned model is installed. Complete packages are easier because they supply or manage all three components.

How do I install AI airline traffic?

The reliable method is to confirm compatibility first, install every required component, and activate only one primary traffic source.

  1. Identify the simulator, edition and platform. An FSX traffic BGL will not work in X-Plane or MSFS. Treat MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 as separate targets unless the package explicitly supports both.
  2. Choose one traffic source. Decide between built-in live traffic, offline traffic, a complete package or an injector. If an injector instructs you to disable built-in AI, do so; running both commonly creates duplicate aircraft and occupied gates.
  3. Install all dependencies. These may include AI aircraft models, texture sets, model-matching rules, schedules and an injector application. With package-style MSFS add-ons, avoid an extra nested folder: the active package folder should directly contain files such as manifest.json and layout.json.
  4. Apply the required simulator settings. Enable airline or AI traffic rather than road vehicles, boats or airport workers. Some injectors require the simulator's own traffic source to be off, so follow the package instructions rather than assuming a high density slider is always correct.
  5. Control parked aircraft. Static or generic ground-aircraft settings can fill gates before injected flights arrive. Reduce that setting if airliners circle, disappear after landing or spawn away from terminals.
  6. Test under suitable conditions. Load a major hub during its normal operating hours and allow time for schedules or an injector to populate. A small airport at night may correctly show no airline traffic.

What changes between flight simulators?

The traffic package and installation method must match the simulator's own AI system.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

External Windows injectors cannot run directly on Xbox or PlayStation. Xbox users, and PlayStation 5 users running MSFS 2024, are limited to traffic features and add-ons supported within the console version of the simulator.

FSX and Prepar3D

FSX and Prepar3D commonly use dedicated AI aircraft plus compiled traffic BGL files containing routes and schedules. The BGL must be in an active scenery location, and every aircraft title referenced by the schedule must match an installed AI aircraft.

X-Plane

X-Plane requires traffic aircraft, liveries and route data designed for its own plugin or built-in AI system. Install plugins only in the location specified by their documentation, include their required model libraries, and do not copy MSFS packages or FSX traffic BGLs into X-Plane.

Why is my AI airline traffic not showing?

Missing AI traffic is usually caused by a disabled source, an incompatible or absent model library, an installation path error, or testing where no scheduled flight exists.

  • No aircraft anywhere: confirm the selected traffic source is enabled, the injector is connected and traffic has not been set to zero.
  • Labels or flights but no visible models: reinstall the required model library and check model-matching rules.
  • Aircraft appear in generic liveries: the route data is working, but an exact airline and aircraft match is unavailable.
  • Traffic appears only in the air: the airport may lack suitable parking spaces, or static ground aircraft may be occupying them.
  • Duplicate flights: disable either built-in traffic or the add-on source rather than running both.
  • An MSFS package is ignored: check for an extra nested directory and verify that it supports the installed simulator generation.
  • FSX schedules disappear after another package is added: search for legacy-format traffic BGLs. A known FSX conflict allows an older-format traffic file to stop newer-format schedules from appearing.

Can I use flyable aircraft as AI traffic?

Flyable aircraft can sometimes be assigned as AI, but purpose-built AI models are the better choice. Flyable models may load detailed cockpits, systems, effects and high-resolution textures for every traffic aircraft, producing poor frame rates and unreliable animations.

How much does AI traffic affect performance?

AI traffic can reduce frame rate and increase CPU load, especially at large hubs with complex models and high ground density. Lower the number of active aircraft first, then reduce the traffic radius or parked-aircraft setting; lowering unrelated scenery settings should not be the first fix.

A common mistake we see is installing several traffic systems to make an airport busier. One well-configured source with efficient AI models normally performs better and avoids duplicate flights, blocked gates and competing injector connections.
