To add GPWS callouts to the default Boeing 737-800 in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, install a compatible callout/GPWS gauge, place its gauge and sound files in the locations specified by the package, then register it in the aircraft’s panel.cfg. Back up the panel first; FS2004 gauges are not guaranteed to work.
Which GPWS package should you use?
Choose according to whether you want spoken radio-altitude callouts or broader ground-proximity warnings. These are often bundled together, but they are not the same system.

For landing-height announcements alone, use the altitude-callout option. Choose the GPWS gauge if you also want descent-rate and proximity warnings, but do not install both packages at once: duplicated gauges can play overlapping calls.
A lightweight gauge does not turn the default 737 into a fully modelled EGPWS aircraft. Most such gauges use radio altitude and basic flight conditions; they do not reproduce every warning mode, terrain database function or cockpit inhibit switch.
How do you install callouts in the default FSX 737?
- Back up the panel. Copy the complete
SimObjects\Airplanes\B737_800\panelfolder somewhere outside FSX. At minimum, preserve the originalpanel.cfg. - Extract the download into a temporary folder. Read its installation document before moving anything. Confirm which files are gauges and which are sounds.
- Copy the gauge files as supplied. A gauge may arrive as a
.cab, a.gaufile or a folder containing XML files. These normally belong under the main FSXGaugesfolder, but retain the package’s folder structure and do not unpack a CAB unless its instructions explicitly require that. - Place the sounds in the specified location. Some gauges expect their audio under the main FSX
Soundfolder; others use a dedicated subfolder. Putting the files in the 737’s ordinary engine-sound folder will not work unless the package specifically says to do so. - Edit the 737’s panel configuration. Open
SimObjects\Airplanes\B737_800\panel\panel.cfgin a plain-text editor. If FSX is installed under a protected Windows folder, edit a copy and then replace the original with administrator permission. - Register the gauge. Copy the exact line supplied by the package into the panel section it identifies. A typical gauge entry has the form
gaugeNN=PackageName!GaugeName, x,y,width,height. ReplaceNNwith an unused number in that section, but do not alter the internal package or gauge name. - Ensure the gauge is loaded continuously. Background callout gauges normally belong in an existing, always-loaded main-panel or virtual-cockpit section. If the documentation supplies a separate pop-up window, reproduce its window entry and title exactly instead of inventing a new section.
- Reload and test the aircraft. Restart FSX or select another aircraft and return to the default 737. Test during a normal descent over relatively level terrain, because the trigger is radio altitude above the ground rather than barometric altitude above sea level.

Why are the GPWS callouts silent?
Silent callouts usually mean the gauge did not load or cannot find its sound files. Check these points in order:
- Wrong panel section: a gauge placed in a pop-up section may remain inactive until that window is opened. Use the always-loaded section recommended by the package.
- Duplicate gauge number: every
gaugeNNentry within one panel section needs its own number. - Incorrect internal name: the text before and after the exclamation mark must match the supplied gauge exactly.
- Misplaced sounds: preserve the original sound subfolder and file names. The gauge usually references a fixed relative path.
- Blocked legacy module: FSX may ask whether to run an unfamiliar gauge. Accept it only when the filename is expected from the downloaded package.
- Gauge incompatibility: an old binary FS2004 gauge may simply fail under a particular FSX installation. Remove its panel entry and restore the backup rather than copying random DLL files into FSX.
If the entire panel disappears or FSX reports a panel configuration problem, restore the original panel.cfg. Common causes are a line inserted outside a named section, a damaged section heading or replacement of the whole configuration when only one gauge entry was required.
Why do the callouts occur at the wrong altitude?
GPWS height callouts use radio altitude, meaning height above the terrain directly beneath the aircraft. They will not necessarily agree with the altimeter, airport elevation or your height above the runway threshold while crossing sloping ground.
“Minimums” is also separate from fixed radio-altitude announcements. It depends on a decision-height setting and is available only if the chosen gauge models that function. Basic callout packages may provide fixed heights without modelling minimums at all.
Will an FS2004 GPWS gauge work in FSX Steam?
Some FS2004 XML and CAB gauges work in both editions of FSX, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Older compiled .gau modules may rely on components FSX cannot load, while a correctly installed XML gauge is generally the safer legacy option.
Test one package at a time and keep the original panel ready to restore. If the gauge causes crashes, fails to appear or never produces sound despite correct paths, remove it and use an FSX-specific gauge or an aircraft add-on with GPWS built into its systems.
