How loud is the Airbus A380 versus other large airliners?

The Airbus A380 is unusually quiet for its size. Inside, it is generally quieter than the Boeing 747-400 and many 777 variants, particularly away from the engines. Outside, its noise footprint is much smaller than the 747-400's, although newer A350s, 787s and 747-8s make the comparison closer and operating conditions can change the result.

In our Aviation & Real-World Flying coverage, we separate cabin noise from airport noise. Cabin readings usually use A-weighted decibels, or dBA; aircraft certification uses effective perceived noise in EPNdB at defined approach, sideline and flyover points. Those figures are not interchangeable.

Is the Airbus A380 quieter than a Boeing 747?

The A380 is normally quieter than the older 747-400, both in the cabin and around an airport. Its Rolls-Royce Trent 900 or Engine Alliance GP7200 engines use newer high-bypass technology, acoustic treatment and lower exhaust velocities than the engine designs fitted to most 747-400s.

How does A380 noise compare with the 777, 787 and A350?

The A380 remains one of the quietest wide-body cabins, but it is not automatically the quietest aircraft outside.

The A380 may compare favourably on a per-passenger basis because one flight can carry so many people. Airport communities, however, experience the noise of each aircraft movement rather than noise divided by occupied seats.

Why is a four-engine A380 so quiet?

Four engines do not automatically mean four times the noise. Acoustic output depends on fan design, exhaust velocity, installation, thrust setting and the aircraft's flight path—not simply the engine count.

  • Modern high-bypass engines: The A380's large fans move a greater mass of air at a lower velocity than older turbojets and early turbofans, reducing the harsh jet-noise component.
  • Cabin isolation: The large fuselage, extensive insulation and physical distance between many seats and the engines reduce transmitted sound.
  • Efficient wing: The A380's large wing helps it operate at comparatively modest speeds during approach, although its weight still requires considerable take-off thrust.
  • Noise-conscious design: Engine nacelles, acoustic liners and airframe details were engineered to meet strict airport-noise requirements.

On approach, engine noise is only part of the sound. Extended landing gear, flap systems and airflow around the airframe can dominate, which is why a low-power A380 is not silent.

Where are the quietest seats on an A380?

The quietest A380 seats are usually towards the front of the upper deck or forward main deck, away from the engines and turbulent airflow behind the wing.

  • Choose a seat ahead of the wing when cabin noise is the priority.
  • The forward upper deck is often especially quiet, subject to the airline's layout.
  • Avoid seats beside galleys, toilets and stairways if passenger and service noise also matters.
  • Seats over or behind the wing hear more engine and airflow noise, even when the measured level is not dramatically higher.

Cabin fittings, seat density and insulation differ between airlines, so aircraft type alone cannot identify the quietest individual seat.

Why do A380 noise measurements disagree?

Published A380 noise figures disagree because they often measure different things under different conditions. A fair comparison must match the aircraft variant, engine type, flight phase, measurement position and noise metric.

  1. Check the unit: Do not compare cabin dBA directly with certification EPNdB.
  2. Match the flight phase: Take-off, climb, cruise and approach produce different sound levels and frequency profiles.
  3. Control the position: A cabin reading beside an engine cannot be compared fairly with one taken in a forward premium cabin.
  4. Account for operations: Aircraft weight, runway, wind and thrust-reduction altitude alter the noise heard on the ground.

Smartphone sound-meter readings are useful only for relative comparisons made with the same device and method. Phone microphones are not calibrated survey instruments and often handle low-frequency engine noise poorly. As a rule of thumb, 3 dB represents twice the acoustic energy but only a small perceived change; a difference near 10 dB is commonly perceived as roughly twice or half as loud.
