What information is required on an aircraft data plate?

For an aircraft subject to US FAA rules, the identification plate must show the builder’s name, model designation, builder’s serial number, type certificate number (if any) and production certificate number (if any). The plate must be fireproof and permanently secured; registration marks, owner details and airworthiness status are handled elsewhere.

FAA aircraft data plate requirements

In our Aviation & Real-World Flying coverage, “aircraft data plate” means the manufacturer’s or builder’s identification plate required under 14 CFR Part 45. Its mandatory fields are:

Builder’s serial numberThe unique airframe number assigned by the builder. It is separate from the registration or tail number.
Type certificate numberThe applicable type certificate number, if the aircraft was built to an approved type design.
Production certificate numberThe applicable production certificate number, if the aircraft was manufactured under one.

The words “if any” matter. Many experimental amateur-built aircraft have no type certificate or production certificate, so those numbers do not apply. Where a certificate does apply, omitting its number is not cured by leaving an empty box without investigating the discrepancy.

This is the FAA list, not a universal international checklist. Other national authorities may require the nationality and registration marks on a fireproof identification plate, reflecting ICAO standards, and may prescribe additional information. The aircraft’s state of registry and certification category determine the applicable rule.

Does the aircraft tail number belong on the data plate?

No—the N-number is not one of the five general FAA data-plate fields listed above. Registration marks are displayed externally and recorded on the registration documents; unlike the builder’s serial number, they can change during the aircraft’s life.

Some plates contain extra boxes for registration, weight or other details, but that does not make those entries part of the general FAA requirement. Our explanation of how tail numbers, serial numbers and official records identify an aircraft covers the distinction in more detail.

Do not confuse the airframe plate with an engine or propeller plate. Those components carry separate identification, and an engine plate may include approved ratings that are not required on the aircraft’s airframe plate.

Where must an aircraft data plate be fitted?

For most conventional aircraft manufactured on or after 7 March 1988, the FAA plate must be on the exterior fuselage, readable by a person on the ground and positioned either adjacent to and aft of the rearmost entrance door or near the tail surfaces.

An aircraft manufactured before that date may retain an accessible interior or exterior plate near an entrance, provided its model designation and builder’s serial number are also displayed externally and are legible from the ground. Balloons and certain specialised aircraft have separate placement provisions.

The plate and its markings must be fireproof, using an approved permanent method such as stamping, engraving or etching. It must be secured so normal servicing is unlikely to deface or remove it and so it is unlikely to be lost or destroyed in an accident. An adhesive printed label is not a substitute.

What should you do if the plate is missing or does not match?

A missing, illegible or mismatched plate is an aircraft identity and airworthiness-records problem, not a cosmetic defect. A mistake we see repeatedly is treating it like ordinary bodywork and attempting to make the numbers look right.

  1. Record the discrepancy. Do not infer the serial number from the paint scheme, registration marks or another aircraft of the same model.
  2. Compare the documents character for character. Check the registration certificate, airworthiness certificate, aircraft records and approved aircraft-specific manuals.   3. Do not restamp or transfer a plate. Installing a donor plate from another airframe is prohibited, even when both aircraft are the same model. Maintenance-related removal or marking has limited regulatory exceptions, but those do not permit an owner to alter identification casually.
  4. Use the authorised correction route. The owner or operator should consult the relevant aviation authority and, where appropriate, the original builder or manufacturer. Any replacement plate or corrected marking needs documentary support and the approval required by that authority.

Until the identity has been established and the discrepancy resolved, do not assume that matching paperwork or a familiar tail number proves the aircraft is compliant.
